Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 17, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

In a six-figure pre-emptive deal, Egmont USA acquires the worldwide rights to Ashes, a new young adult dystopian thriller trilogy by author Ilsa J. Bick, just a week before the Bologna Children’s Book Fair 2010 (March 23-26).  Egmont USA plans to publish Ashes, the first book, in fall 2011.  Jennifer Laughran of the Andrea Brown Literary Agency, which sold the series, describes Bick’s trilogy as a cross between The Hunger Games and The Forest of Hands and Teeth.  Ashes is set in the aftermath of an event that wipes out a majority of the world’s population, with those remaining considerably altered  some with superhuman qualities and others, well, not so much … think maybe a taste for human flesh.  Among the few teens/kids that survive in the new chaotic world are: Alex, a resourceful teenage girl; Tom, who left the war in Afghanistan only to find something much worse at home; and Ellie, an angry 8-year-old girl whom the two must rescue.


Who will direct Summit Entertainment‘s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, which is expected to be split into two movies, based on Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. Well, Entertainment Weekly reports that the studios has approached at the very least three noted directors, Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation), Gus Van Sant (Milk) and Bill Condon (Dreamgirls).  Until then … everyone will just have to sharpen their fangs on the new DVD release of New Moon.

Actor/writer Jason Segel will star in Disney‘s new Muppet movie, The Greatest Muppet Movie of All Time, per Heat Vision.  You may recall that Segel is also co-writing the script for the movie with Nicholas Stoller.  With James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords, Da Ali G Show) set to direct the movie, there is no word on the actual plot.


CBBC orders a third season of Basil and Barney’s Swap Shop (26×60) from The Foundation, a unit of RDF Media Group.  The new episodes will debut on CBBC and BBC Two live in 2010.  In addition to comedy sketches featuring Basil Brush and Barney Harwood, the series offers kids the chance to swap stuff they no longer want for stuff they do, live on the show and throughout the week on the web.

And the winner is MadridMTV Networks International (MTVNI) heads to Spain where this year’s annual MTV EMAs will be broadcast live from Madrid’s Caja Magica (The Music Box) venue, in Manzanares Park, on Sunday, November 7, 2010.  This is the second time in the 17-year history of the MTV EMAs that the show will be hosted from Spain, the first time being Barcelona in 2002.  This year MTV Spain marks its 10the anniversary.  In Spain, MTV Networks offers three pay TV channels, MTV, Nickelodeon, and Paramount Comedy.

Moonscoop inks presales for the second season of its preschool series Dive Olly Dive!  France 5, SVT (Sweden), MTV3 (in Finland) and Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (Middle East) acquire the new season of Dive Olly Dive (52×11).  Previous broadcast sales of season two of the series include Disney Asia, Univision, TVA Canada and co-producers KiKa.  Dive Olly Dive! is a co-production of Mike Young Productions (MYP), Flying Bark Productions (Australia), KI.KA, ARD (Germany), Telegael Teo (Ireland), Atlantyca Entertainment (Italy) and GDC (China).

This week Walmart opens its Twilight Saga Shops in stores nationwide, just ahead of the DVD release of The Twilight Saga: New Moon at 12:01a on March 20.  Walmart is planning to host Twilight fan events at its 24-hour stores on Friday night, including (depending on the store) various giveaways, trivia contests leading up to the midnight release.  Walmart’s Twilight Saga Shops, which are open through mid-April, will also offer the New Moon Ultimate Fan Edition DVD, the only one that features a sneak peek at The Twilight Saga: Eclipse movie, as well as themed clothing, jewelry and other merchandise.

Fox Home Entertainment will release Avatar on Blu-ray disc and DVD in the US and Canada on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2010.  James Cameron’s Avatar, in case you missed it, is no the highest grossing film of all time with worldwide box office earnings of $2.6+ billion.  Avatar will release around the world beginning in April.

Discovery Communications completes a licensing deal with Horizon Group USA, under which they will develop Animal Planet branded craft and activity kits.  Aimed at K5-11, the collection of 19 products will launch this April in Michaels’ retail stores and online ( ).  The Animal Planet craft products, which include cast and fossils to paint-by-number, create your own gliders, “color and create” your own flipbooks and “stamps n’ stickers,” among others, will be included in Michaels’ Kids Summer Camp 2010 program.  Animal Planet’s licensing agent, the Joester Loria Group (JLG), brokered the North American deal.

Toei Animation appoints Edebe Audiovisual Licensing as its licensing agent in Spain for the TV series, Dr.Slump  Arale (243×26).  Edebe will handle Dr.Slump  Arale for Spain and Andorra territories, for merchandising rights except in publishing.  A young adult/family-targeted comedy about Dr. Slump, a genius, who decides one day to create a perfect robot girl named Arale.  But Dr. Slump isn’t the greatest inventor and in edition to poor eyesight, Arale is a remarkably naive girl and the series revolves around her ongoing misunderstandings.  Based on the Dr. Slump  Arale comics created by Akira Toriyama (who also wrote Dragon Ball), the Dr.Slump  Arale animated series was quite popular in Spain, and other parts of the world, in the 1980s.


Cookie Jar Entertainment ups Michael Berreth to VP/Marketing.  While at the company, Berreth has managed various brands and marketing efforts including tune-in campaigns for CBS Weekend Morning Block, third party promotions and the re-launch of Strawberry Shortcake.  He previously worked for Disney, Universal Studios, Nestle and Kellogg’s.
