Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 16, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Just ahead of Fox‘s release of the new feature film Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules (March 25), based on author Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series, Poptropica ( www.poptropica.com ) will launch its new Wimpy Wonderland Island game, the site’s 18th Island.  Poptropica members have early access to Wimpy Wonderland now, and those that log in and play during March will receive an Gold Card, Paper Boy or Paper Girl, which they can use to turn their Poptropican into lined paper (a la Wimpy Kid books).  Wimpy Wonderland, which takes place during a snow day, allows players to interact with Greg Heffley and his friends and family in the virtual world.  The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series and Poptropica were both created by Kinney.

Ganz’s Webkinz World ( www.webkinz.com ) and Universal Pictures partner for a promotion for the new family-targeted mixed animated/live action movie HOP, which releases in theatres April 1, 2011.  Webkinz World is awarding virtual HOP-inspired bunnies to members that complete a Hop video trailer quiz on the site.  Once they have a virtual bunny avatar, kids can register and adopt their own virtual pet.  Webkinz World will also offer daily movie-related prizing as part of the promotion.  The new virtual avatar looks like E.B., the teen son of the Easter Bunny, voiced in the movie by Russell Brand, who heads off to Hollywood to seek his fortune.  The campaign is live on the Webkinz World site now through April 3.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Beta Records TV, the syndicated first-run weekly music centric TV series for kids, teams with In Tune Monthly, a magazine targeted to young music students and their teachers, on programming content for the TV series.  From this April, each episode of Beta Records TV will feature the new segment, In Tune Music News, which is based on content featured in the current In Tune Monthly issue.  Showplace Television Syndication distributes Beta Records TV, which is an Educational/Informational (E/I) series.

ABC Family hosts its Harry Potter Weekend event, beginning tomorrow Thursday, March 17 through Sunday, March 20, which will include a special sneak peek at the final Potter picture, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part 2, which opens July 15, 2011, including Harry and Draco’s fight in the Room of Requirement, the dragon sequences and the final courtyard battle between good and evil.  The weekend will also feature cast and crew behind-the-scenes footage and interviews from the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows movies.  Interstitial content will include director David Yates’ take on harry and Hermione’s relationship, the origins of The Marauder’s Map, and a look at the last shot of principal photography on the final movie with producer David Baron.  The Harry Potter weekend schedule can be found at www.abcfamily.go.com .

Guru Studio completes broadcast deals for its preschool CG animated series, Justin Time (26×11).  Justin Time, created by Guru for Family Channel (Canada) and Disney Junior in Canada where it will debut later this year, has been acquired by Discovery Kids Latin America, YLE (Finland), and Hop! (Israel).

MARKETING/LICENSING

Hasbro enters into a strategic development deal with UK-based Jagex Limited (RuneScape) to jointly a new online game based on the Transformers brand.  Hasbro and Jagex plan to launch the Transformers online game in 2012 in North America, Latin America, Europe, New Zealand and Australia.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

David Levine is promoted to VP/Programming and GM, Disney XD Worldwide.  Levine will oversee the multiplatform Disney XD and focus on its growth, programming and planning.  In his GM position, Levine will report to Carolina Lightcap, President, Disney Channels Worldwide, while in his program planning and scheduling role, he reports to Paul DeBenedittis, SVP/Programming Strategy, Disney Channels Worldwide.  Levine, who joined Disney in 2004, was most recently VP/Worldwide Programming Strategy, Acquisitions and Co-Productions, Disney Channels Worldwide, and was responsible for global programming and acquisition strategies for the Disney ABC kids’ brands worldwide and was key in the launch of Disney XD.  He previously served in business affairs and legal roles for Ragdoll USA, The itsy bitsy Entertainment Company, and Marvel Entertainment Group.

RATINGS

In Disney Junior’s first month, the new re-branded preschool block brings Disney Channel its top three highest-rated weeks in ever in the daypart with preschoolers K2-5 and Women 18-49.  Launch-to-date, Disney Junior has delivered increases with K2-5 (420,000) an increase of +44% and among Women 18-49 (249,000) up by +13%. Jake and the Never Land Pirates (daily 8:30a-8:55a), which premiered with the launch of Disney Junior on February 14, 2011, is currently TV’s top preschool series year-to-date with K2-5 (924,000).
Disney Junior airs Monday-Friday 4a-2p, and Saturday/Sunday 4a-9a.

Nickelodeon‘s primetime premiere of its new original TV two-hour movie, Best Player, on Saturday, march 12, 8p, was the week’s top scripted basic cable telecast with Total Viewers (5.3 million) and as the top broadcast and basic cable show among K2-11 (2.9 million), K6-11 (2.4 million), and Tweens 9-14 (2.1 million).  Best Player becomes the number one TV movie year-to-date among K2-11, K6-11, and Tweens 9-14, and increased over the same time last year by + 145%, +179, and +200% respectively.
