Cynopsis: DIGITAL

03/16/11

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, March 16, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.  If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.

Time Warner Cable has launched a new TV-viewing iPad app – the industry’s first that allows you to watch live TV from the popular tablet. (Comcast has announced plans to add live streaming to its iPad app later this year.) View broadcast shows in HD from 30 different linear networks including A&E, Bravo, Discovery, SyFy and USA; the online channel guide allows you to scroll through to see what’s currently on. For now, the app requires users to be within range of their home Wi-Fi connection to activate live streaming. However, Time Warner’s network partners aren’t amused. Not only have they not signed off on it – apparently they are already sending cease and desist letters to the #2 MSO claiming that the service is not supported by current affiliate agreements, reports Adweek.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

CNN said it will join the TV Everywhere offerings of Comcast, Cox, Dish and Verizon as the network unveiled a new HD video player at SXSW due out this summer capable of creating drag-and-drop playlists and streaming video footage (over WiFi) in 19:9 format. The player will enable you to collect and archive videos on subjects you wish to track, according to CNN Digital GM K.C. Estenson, who also demoed a feature that allows you to pause video online then resume play on an iPhone or iPad. CNN will also expand the reach of its citizen journalist iReport videos by striking partnerships with third parties such as Apple and Gowalla. Congrats to the inaugural 2010 iReport winners – CNN says more than 750k have contributed to the program.

ESPN has acquired multimedia rights to two of Spain’s top soccer events: the Copa del Rey Final on April 20, 2011 and the Spanish Supercopa in August. ESPN Deportes, ESPN Deportes Radio and ESPN3.com will present live television, radio and online coverage of the events.

Independent health-themed programming group HealthiNation launched a quartet of new online shows: “The Essentials” profiles vitamins, nutrients and compounds contained in everyday foods; “Simple Smoothies” introduces smoothies for multiple situations; “Kitchen Crashers is a nutrition makeover series and “Babyhood Basics” covers health and wellness issues for toddlers.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Palo Alto-based AdGent Digital has acquired ShortTail Media, purveyors of a proprietary platform that allows publishers such as the NYTimes, Time Warner, CNN and Nat Geo to deliver video ads in a stand-alone, full-screen format. ShortTail Media’s management team will join AdGent Digital with the exception of joint founder, President and CEO David Payne, who is leaving to take a post at an unnamed U.S. publishing house.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

In a boost for the ad verification space, Google is allowing ad inventory purchased through the DoubleClick Ad exchange to be verified by a third party for the first time. (Verification was previously allowed on Google Display Network inventory purchased directly from Google, but not on GDN inventory bought through Google’s ad exchange.) DoubleVerify will now provide verification of ad units, enabling advertisers to increase the efficiency and security of their campaigns.

Online video ad platform Adap.tv introduced a new a new buy-side management system geared toward advertisers, agencies, agency trading desks and ad networks. The platform streamlines the process of buying and managing online video ads, adding features such as advanced targeting, optimization and unified reporting/analytics to a single interface. Mediabrands’ Cadreon marketplace has signed on to adopt the Adap.tv for Advertisers solution.

Semantic ad start-up Admantx officially shed its beta label, opening up its targeting platform to the public. Admantx relies on keywords and tags to target users based on emotions, motivations and behaviors.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

Despite earlier reports, Apple may steer clear of including Near-Field Technology (NFC) in the iPhone 5 due to the” lack of a clear standard” for the technology across the industry, according to The Independent. The short wave NFC technology is used to enable users to make purchases at retail outlets or vending machines by waving their phone in front of a reading device. Google is reportedly working on a partnership with electronic-payments company VeriFone to enable mobile payments.

WalMart’s HD movie streaming service Vudu completed an integration with Sony to be viewable on the company’s line up of 2011 Blu-ray players and Home Theater Systems.

French interactive digital TV solution provider HTTV is rolling out a new over-the-top player for set-top boxes and TV manufacturers at next week’s IP&TV World Forum, which uses HTTP-based adaptive bitrate streaming and interfaces with Allegro servers.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

Accusations that Netflix is dominating web traffic don’t seem exaggerated after all. The company’s 20 million subscribers account for some 61% of all digital movies streamed online, according to a new NPD report, far ahead of its nearest competitors Comcast (8%) and DirecTV, Time Warner Cable and Apple (each tied at 4%.) The report noted that consumers are now well aware of and comfortable with the “four modes of digital-video acquisition,” which brings the latest releases to sell through services and VOD, while making subscription services such as Netflix wait. Digital video now makes up one quarter of all home video volume.

Some data from Twitter, which is celebrating its 5th anniversary next week:

  • 3 yrs, 2 mo. and 1 day – the time it took from the first Tweet to the billionth Tweet
  • 1 week – the time it now takes for users to send a billion Tweets
  • 50 million – the ave. number of Tweets people sent per day, one year ago
  • 140 million – the ave. number of Tweets people sent per day, in the last month
  • 177 million – tweets sent on March 11, 2011
  • 572,000 number of new accounts created on March 12, 2011
  • 460,000 – Average number of new accounts per day over the last month
  • 182% – increase in number of mobile users over the past year

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Verizon
announced it will launch its first 4G smartphone, the HTC ThunderBolt, on Thursday of this week, operable on its 38-city 4G network activated in Dec. The 4.3-inch touchscreen smartphone will retail for $250 with a two-year contract, include an 8-megapixel camera and 720p HD camcorder and run on Google’s Android 2.2 Froyo OS. The device can also be used as mobile hotspot for up to 8 Wi-Fi devices. Data plans start at $30/month for unlimited access.

Women-targeted publisher Meredith Corp. launched tablet edition of three of its most popular magazines – Better Homes and Gardens, Parents and Fitness - for the iPad. Monthly editions, priced at $3.99 for Better Homes and $2.99 for the other two, will include features such as behind-the-scenes videos, scrollable recipes and a color-swap app that allows viewers to see featured rooms in different hues.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Former FCC Chairman Michael Powell has been named to the top post of cable industry lobbyist group National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA). He succeeds outgoing President and CEO Kyle McSlarrow, who was recently named President of Comcast/NBC Universal in Washington D.C.

IAC has named former Disney CEO and current Vuguru Chairman Michael Eisner to its Board of Directors, joining his old friend IAC Chairman Barry Diller. (The two men ran Paramount together in the 70’s.)

Shopping site Kaboodle tapped former Kodak Gallery product executive Robert Carter as VP/Product, reporting directly to Kaboodle CEO Anne Zehren.

Access 360 Media tapped Randy Gerstenblatt as EVP, Business Development. He will lead the company’s efforts to build strategic advertising and media partnerships, leveraging the Access 360 Media networks Mallvision and AMNtv.

New York-based ad sales group AdLarge Media hired former Westwood One digital ad sales director Michelle Jennings as EVP, Digital Revenue.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

In response to both external pressure and Mozilla’s decision to support a similar system for the upcoming version of its Firefox browser, Microsoft unveiled the latest version of Internet Explorer (for PCs only,) built for speed and convenience and complete with a do-not-track tool that allows users to opt out of monitoring programs. (To download or learn more about the browser go to the ornately named beautyoftheweb.com.) The move represents a bit of a turning point in online privacy, as such features have been around for years but have never made the final cut on a widely distributed version due to concerns of loss of targeted ad revenue. On the other hand, Microsoft doesn’t go out of its way to explain how to use the feature. To activate the do-not-track filters, you must navigate to the browser’s “Safety” menu to pull up a web page that currently contains 17 do-not-track lists. Select lists such as Albine, Easy List, Privacy Choice and TRUSTe to be protected from select tracking programs. All in all, the release is the most elegant IE to date; handy features include “Pinned Sites” and a Jump List that enables users to put embed websites directly on the Windows 7 Taskbar (an option familiar to Safari users.) Other protections include an InPrivate Browsing feature allowing you to surf without leaving any traces that can be discovered later. The build-in SmartScreen Filter identifies potentially shady websites and warns users with pop-up windows and a list of suggested actions.
