Good morning. It’s Wednesday, March 14, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.
Disney Channel is working on another new music-based TV series, Zombies and Cheerleaders (working title), which is currently in the pilot research stage. The world has found it for humans and zombies to co-exist, most everywhere, except for at least one high school, where the zombies are still on the fringe and the cheerleaders are the most popular group. The story revolves around one zombie, Zed Necrodopolis, who is on a mission to improve the zombie image and zombie/human relations. When a new girl (human) shows up at school things get interesting because Zed seems to like her and she wants to be a cheerleader. Created by and co-executive produced by Joseph Raso and David Light, with Eric Weinberg (Scrubs) as executive producer, the Zombies and Cheerleaders pilot is directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas). Zombies and Cheerleaders features music by Adam Schlesinger, he wrote the title song to the movie That Thing You Do!, among other movie soundtrack songs, and is co-founder and bassist of the alternative band Fountains of Wayne.
The Fred Rogers Company, which, of course, produced the iconic kid-targeted PBS series Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, has entered into a licensing deal with American Classics, a noted licensed t-shirt and apparel. The license agreement was negotiation by Fred Rogers Company’s agency, Brand Central. Under the deal, American Classics will establish strategic partnerships and licensing deals that will extend the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood brand throughout North America and the UK, and will include product categories such as high-end apparel and accessories. The Mister Rogers’ license program will focus on specialty and “better” department stores.
CreateSpace (www.createspace.com), an on-demand service and part of Amazon.com, and Moonscoop enter into a deal making the animated series Bobby’s World (all 81 episodes) available on DVD or stream instantly on Amazon Instant Video. Created by and staring the voice of Howie Mandel, Bobby’s World will be available as individual season sets today and an 18-disc collection of the entire series beginning March 16, premiering for the first time exclusively on DVD and Amazon Instant Video. Bobby’s World originally aired on FOX Kids Network (US) from 1990-98, as well in 65+ countries worldwide. Bobby’s World can also be seen on Moonscoop’s Kabillion multiplatform channel.
Coming off its acquisition of the preschool property Noddy last week, Classic Media inks a whole host of programming content deals (350+ hours) for its portfolio of titles across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) with free & pay TV, home entertainment and IPTV partners. Deals include those for titles such as Tinga Tinga Tales, Guess with Jess, Postman Pat, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and She-Ra: Princess of Power, among others. MTVA (Hungary) and Channel One Russia’s kid’s channel Karusel (Russia) have acquired the preschool series Tinga Tinga Tales and Guess with Jess. Postman Pat, already available in the region, is also launching on Czech TV (Czech Republic) and Orlando Kids (Ex-Yugoslavia), making the series has complete coverage across the CEE territory. Nan and Lili and Little Red Tractor have been picked up by Voxell across CIS (Russia’s Commonwealth of Independent States). Other new deals include iconic cult hero series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power and Voltron: Defenders of the Universe acquired in Russia as part of 2×2 Channel‘s retro slot. The channel has also acquired the CBBC’s comedy shorts OOglies.

The Jim Henson Company heads to MIPTV April 1-4, 2012, where it will offer content buyers the format rights to develop localized versions, with local hosts, of The Possibility Shop, its popular original web-based series that is currently its third season on Disneyfamily.com in the US. The Possibility Shop is an arts and crafts-centric series that is designed to provide kids/families with everyday activities that encourage creative and imaginative thinking, investigation and discovery, while bolstering self-confidence. The format also includes a number of holiday themed episodes. The Possibility Shop format also provides buyers with sponsorship and contest opportunities.
