Good Morning, it’s Wednesday, March 14, 2007 and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
The kid gloves are off. Viacom has filed suit against Google. The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York complaining of YouTube‘s “massive intentional copyright infringement.” The parent of cable networks MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central is seeking $1 billion in damages. The suit has been anticipated as the ultimate endgame since Google acquired YouTube last year for $1.65 billion and talks between Viacom and the video-sharing site broke off last month. It states the plaintiffs have identified more than 150,000 unauthorized clips that have been viewed 1.5 billion times, but that this number is only a fraction of the aggregate violations.
Bravo made its first online acquisition, acquiring televisionwithoutpity .com to go with its stable of TV related sites, such as BravoTV.com, BrilliantButCancelled.com, Outzone.com and GetTRIO.com. The site is famous for snarky criticism of shows and a love/hate relationship with the medium, which Bravo executives promise not to impede. With one million unique users and 30 million total page views, the site will double Bravo’s aggregate online traffic. Co-founders Tara Ariano and Sarah Bunting will stay on as editors.
Walt Disney Internet Group is planning to launch a new site www.family.com later this week geared as a resource for Moms. Disney surveyed some 30,000 moms last year to find out what they wanted from an online Disney-branded destination and worked to deliver:
- opinion pieces from an advisory board of “mommy bloggers”
- community tools to help form groups around shared interests
- a group of screened, family-friendly links called “the Family 1,000”
The blogs and threads on the site will monitored closely to watch for foul language and inappropriate remarks. The site will remain in beta through the summer and is part of a comprehensive redesign of Disney.com.
Turner held its Upfront presentations for TNT, TBS and Court TV in New York yesterday, promising extensive broadband content to complement new series, movies and specials. As part of a major branding initiative Court TV will utilize its site www.smokinggun.com to brand a series of quarterly specials about criminals caught in the act. The first special The Smoking Gun Presents: The Dumbest Criminals in the World will count down the 20 dumbest criminals along with their dumbest crimes. Turner also promoted its ad supported broadband comedy network superdeluxe .com, which attracted more than one million unique users during its first month of operation.
Online video technology provider vMix Media launched a new NBC channel featuring promo clips of Heroes and 30 Rock. Vmix.com, whose tagline is “creative is sexy,” posts content and offers tools for media companies that encourages users to send messages and leave comments about the clips. It has also signed deals with Tribune’s interactive division to offer tools to 50 of its newspaper and local station sites. Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment is also a partner.
Look for Nintendo’s Wii gaming platform to feature community-building features such as matchmaking tools and rankings. GameSpy will supply the software, and Pokemon Battle Revolution will be the first game to utilize the technology, slated to launch June 25.
A coalition of heavy hitters in the tech space presented FCC officials with a prototype device that will utilize unused television airwaves or “white space” to deliver wireless internet access to homes and offices. Microsoft, Google, Dell, HP, Intel and Phillips want to help make internet services available to those considered below the digital divide to help growth the market for their services. The coalition says it could begin shipping the device to stores by 2009. Perhaps this is just what the FCC is looking for. Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein criticized the current administration’s failed policy for deploying broadband technology last week, calling for new national strategy that included benchmarks, deployment timetables and thresholds to measure success.
Disney said it will launch ABC Family HD, Disney Channel HD, ESPNNEWS HD and Toon Disney HD on DirecTV by early 2008. All four will be HD simulcasts of the standard def channels. Disney also announced DirecTV will begin carrying Spanish- language ESPN Deportes later this month.
Scripps TV sites relaunched utilizing the Inergize Digital Media template and the Dayport video platform. The eight stations will now sport a common look and feel with horizontal navigation, and the Dayport player featured prominently on the main page.
Getty Images acquired Scoopt, an aggregator and distributor of photographs and videos captured by eyewitnesses to newsworthy events. Getty Images plans to help syndicate its content on the editorial section of its site, as well as invest in technology upgrades and enhancements to make www.scoopt.com more accessible and user friendly. Citizen journalists who submit content to Scoopt grant the agency a 12-month exclusive license to distribute the content in exchange for a share of any revenue generated.
Cox Communications and Lin TV’s WPRI-TV in West Warwick, R.I. reached a digital multicast agreement to offer additional NCAA Tournament Basketball games to Cox Digital Cable customers. CBS featured games will air on channel 12 in HD, and additional games will air on digital channels 801 and 802. Cox and Lin recently signed a retransmission agreement that cleared the way for the deal.
Verizon’s FIOS TV was given approval to launch in Rockland County, New York, bringing the total amount of communities it serves in New York to 29.

AOL signed a two-year preferred portal agreement with PointRoll, giving it exclusive use of the rich media provider’s formats including an application that implants streaming video within banner ads. AOL has been working with PointRoll for months and is already showing advertisers NetStream, a video player that begins to play after a user clicks on anything within the page.
GM picked Digitas to handle the back-end work for its eight brand-specific automotive web sites–Buick, Pontiac, GMC, Chevrolet, Saab, Cadillac, Saturn and Humvee. Boston-based Digitas also picked up work for the GMC corporate site.
Total ad spending rose 4.1 percent to $149.6 billion in 2006, according to TNS Media Intelligence. While television’s share of the ad spend pie stayed virtually the same in 2006 at 43.7 percent, internet advertising increased from 5.8 percent to 6.5 percent, the largest increase of any medium. Automotive advertisers such as GM and DaimlerChrysler made huge cutbacks in their ad budgets, by 23.7% and 10.7 percent prospectively. Within the TV medium, spending rose from $62.1 to $65.3 billion. Spot TV and Spanish language TV were the biggest gainers.

Digital aggregation and switching facility provider Azzurro HD hired Jim Scott as Senior Director of Sales. Jim has nearly 15 years in TV video and ad sales and spent a decade as a producer for Major League Baseball Productions.
Dating sites are nothing new. Now comes a broadband TV network dedicated to Romance Novels. www.romancenovels.tv puts the spotlight on romance authors, featuring and extensive selection of interviews with best selling novelists such as Nora Roberts, J.R. Ward and Christina Dodd. Authors share their secrets, give sneak peaks to their upcoming works and, in a travelogue section, take readers to the actual places where the stories are set. The site was founded by Maria Lokken, Marisa O’Neil and John Werner. Not to be confused with www.romancenovels.com, which hasn’t launched yet and looks cheesy.
