Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, March 12, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

For intents and purposes, it appears ER from Warner Bros. TV will be back on the NBC schedule next season for its 15th season.  Reports are the show has cast a couple of new recurring characters, and has scheduled to begin production on the first few episodes for next season, immediately upon wrapping this season. All good signs for the ER fans, tho remember – nothing official from NBC as yet.

Nickelodeon is getting into the dance/variety show genre as it debuts Dance on Sunset, a 12-episode, half-hour series that teaches tweens how to dance, sing and perform like their favorite stars. The series, hosted by Quddus Philippe from MTV’s TRL, will begin March 29 at 930p directly after Nickelodeon’s 2008 Kids’ Choice Awards. Produced by Magical Elves, Dance on Sunset will move to its regular time period on Sundays at 830p after its premiere.

History’s premiere of Ax Men on Sunday (10p) delivered 1.7 million A25-54 and 1.6 million A18-49 viewers, in addition to 3 million total viewers. This premiere became the second best series launch for the network.

A new syndication pickup for cable network TV One The Hughleys from Twentieth Television, will join the lineup as of April 5th, reports THR.  The first of 89 episodes will air in a 7-hour marathon on the 5th, and beginning April 7th, will air twice each night at 730p and 1130p.  TV One is now available in 43.4 million households.

Citing affiliate and viewer demand, Scripps Networks will simulcast the standard-definition and hi-def feeds of HGTV and Food Network to cable and satellite affiliates starting March 31. HGTV-HD and Food Network-HD both launched in 2006 and have carried many programs in hi-def on a separate schedule. After the move, viewers with HD-enabled sets can watch programs and commercials in hi-def at the same time the shows and ads air on the standard-definition channels.

NBC Universal and LimeLife, Inc. are bringing fans of the long-running NBC series Law & Order a new mobile game version called Law & Order: Celebrity Betrayal. Players will interact with cast members as they are drawn into a murder mystery, interrogate witnesses, solve the crime and go to trial. Executive Producer Dick Wolf and his team developed the game with LimeLife to make sure it captured the same fast-paced drama of the TV series.

Last Friday’s finale of CMT’s Gone Country attracted 1.2 million A18-49 viewers. CMT will rebroadcast this finale again today at 5p.

Fox has a new animated comedy series in development called Sit Down, Shut Up!, an adaptation of a live-action Australian comedy series, from Sony Pictures TV, Granada USA and Tantamount. The story revolves around the staff at a small town high school, where the teachers come first.


CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:    The NBC Universal/New Corp. online video joint venture Hulu launches to the public today after an 18-week beta trial that resulted in some impressive viewing numbers. In the past 30 days, more than 5 million viewers have streamed programming from or distributor sites such as AOL, MSN, Comcast’s, MySpace and Yahoo. And more than 50,000 Flash 9-capable Hulu video players have been embedded on over 5,000 independent sites. New programming partnerships with Warner Bros. Television, Lionsgate, the NBA, NHL, NCAA, Vuguru and the Onion News Network make it the closest thing yet to a one-stop shop for free online premium programming. (Hulu launches with 250 TV series and 100 feature length films). Advertisers can utilize a cool new “select an ad” feature, enabling users to pick among a selection of spots. Movie studios can choose to stream a 2-minute trailer as an exclusive single program sponsorship. However, questions remain on just how viable the venture will be. Hulu, which relies on its network owners and partners for content, will bear all of the streaming and server costs for less than half of the revenue generated from video views. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYITV Worldwide unveiled a restructuring plan that features an internal merger of its exploitation, merchandise and licensing divisions into one unified business.  The plan will see the merging of Granada International and Granada Ventures into a single entity later this spring.  The unified business will continue to be led by ITV Worldwide President and Managing Director, Peter Iacono, who recently joined the company from Sony Pictures (US), reporting to Dawn Airey, Managing Director, ITV Global Content.  Additionally, the restructure will result in the creation of the new position of Commercial Brand director, ITV Worldwide, overseeing brand and product development teams.  The move comes on the heals of the news from earlier this week of the departure of Granada International’s Managing Director, Nadine Nohr.   Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYThe legal go-ahead has been given by the Canadian courts for Montreal’s Remstar Corporation to acquire Quebec’s TQS network.  The channel, owned by Quebec’s Cogeco Inc (60%) and CTVglobemedia (40%), was under bankruptcy protection as of this past December.  Over $65 million is due to creditors with the approval of the Remstar Corp. buyout proposal to be voted on next month.  With over 400 employees and other contracted workers, TQS owns Montreal, Quebec City, Sherbrooke, and Trois-Rivieres stations as well as affiliates in Gatineau-Ottawa, Val-d’Or, Rouyn-Noranda, and Riviere-du-Loup.  Another company, Toronto-based private investor Catalyst, had also placed a proposal before TQS.   Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  CBS took top honors Monday night with 2.9/8 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC’s The Bachelor special at 8p won with 2.6/8, while the premiere of Canterbury’s Law on FOX posted a 1.7/5 ranking fifth overall. CBS’ sitcoms during 9p, the Two and a Half Men repeat and a new episode of Old Christine averaged a 3.6/9 to win. At 10p, NBC had a turn in first place as Medium delivered a 2.9/8.

John Sykes, President/Network Development with MTV Networks announced his decision to leave the company, according to Multichannel News.  John started as a programming executive at MTV in the early 1980s then later became president of VH1 in 1994 where he helped launch the Save the Music program.

Discovery Communications tapped Tom Carr to be SVP/Marketing for Planet Green, the company’s new eco-lifestyle channel that debuts this June. Tom is charged with brand strategy and leadership across all content platforms for Planet Green including network positioning, consumer and trade marketing, partnerships and promotions. He will report to Eileen O’Neill, President/GM, Planet Green.

Ken Taylor was named President/GM of Starcom MediaVest Group’s restructured GM Planworks, the standalone agency that manages buying and planning for General Motors. In this position, Ken follows Dennis Donlin who announced his plans to leave the company last week. GM Planworks will now be more integrated into Starcom MediaVest Group, sharing print, digital, out-of-home, search and research resources.

Tribune Company appointed Lee Abrams as its new Chief Innovation Officer, effective April 1. Lee, who has served as SVP/CCO at XM Satellite Radio since 1998, will take the innovation helm at Tribune and lead across the company’s publishing, broadcasting and interactive divisions.

Chieh Yen joined creative services agency Blue Room as Senior Designer coming from nyc where he handled advertising, broadcast and film projects for a variety of clients.

Former GSN executive Joel Chiodi will be the new VP/Marketing and Promotions for NFL Network starting immediately. Joel will lead the development and supervision of the network’s strategic marketing and promotions such as affiliate marketing and local ad sales efforts. He will report to Dena Kaplan, SVP/Marketing.

Lionsgate elevated Barbara Wall to EVP/Television and Andy Richley to VP/Television Development. Barbara will continue to be involved with new program development for broadcast and cable that encompasses 30m comedies, hour-long dramas, movies, miniseries and limited series. She will report direct to Kevin Beggs, President/Television Programming and Production. Andy will remain working in scripted development with Barbara in addition to heading alternative development. He also reports direct to Kevin Beggs.

Outdoor Channel added John Fabian as SVP/Ad Sales, Eastern Region. Prior to his new post, John was SVP/Eastern Sales at United Stations Radio Networks where he supervised a New York sales force.

Libby Hansen moved up to SVP/Alternative Series and Specials with NBC, reporting to Craig Plestis, EVP/Alternative Programming, Development and Specials, NBC Entertainment. Libby will continue to manage development for alternative series and current series for NBC Entertainment’s Alternative Development. Furthermore, she will still supervise current franchises such as Deal or No Deal, Last Comic Standing and The Golden Globe Awards, as well as Nashville Star.

SCPF, part of the WPP network of worldwide agencies, named Carmelo Rodriguez as Art Director and Guillermo Fernandez-Lomana as Copywriter for the Miami office. Both joined from CONTRAPUNTO/BBDO and will work together at SCPF on such clients as Big Brothers Big Sisters, DHL, Credit One Bank and Subway.
