Cynopsis: DIGITAL

03/10/10

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, March 10, 2010, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Spurred on by location based social networking services like FourSquare and Loopt, Facebook is getting ready to launch its own location-based service at the company’s f8 developer’s conference in April, reports the NYTimes. Facebook is apparently planning to allow users to both share their current location with friends and allow developers to build applications that take location into account. The move is designed to help the company compete with Google in the growing local small business advertising space. Of course with a user base over 400 million, Facebook must be careful to address privacy concerns when considering such a feature.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

Futurestates is the name of a new forward-looking fictional online series from San Francisco’s Independent Television Service (ITVS – producers of the Independent Lens series on PBS.) Eleven thoughtful films take a look at alarming trends and extrapolate out to look at how things may end up in the not-to-distant future. They’re longer (15 min. +) and more ambitious than your typical online comedy, featuring some compelling visuals and interesting nonlinear storytelling. For instance, Ben Rekhi’s Fallout utilizes stripped down digital effects to place us in the aftermath of a nuclear attack in L.A. Ramin Bahrani’s (Goodbye Solo) Plastic Bag, narrated by German auteur Werner Hertzog, follows the (never-ending) life of a plastic bag. Watch a film then visit the interactive Predict-O-Meter to comment on these future glimpses or to submit your own predictions about what the future will bring.

Clarification: Microsoft’s video platform is named Silverlight – the software is currently in its third generation, supporting HD 720p playback.
