Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 8, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

DQ Entertainment enters into a new distribution deal with ZDF Enterprises for the new 3D stereoscopic HD TV series 5 & IT.  A fantasy adventure series targeted to K6-10, 5 & IT is based on the popular book by Edith Nesbit. The story has previously been adapted as live-action movie and TV projects in Europe.  ZDF will server as distributor for the series, which is being produced for a worldwide budget of about US$13.5 million.  ZDF will hold the distribution rights in 64 countries including Western and Eastern Europe (excluding French speaking Europe, the UK and Ireland), South Africa and Latin America.  5 & IT follows the adventures of five kids after they discover and befriend a bizarre little sand fairy, a Psammead – an ancient, ugly and irritable sand fairy who grants them one wish per day, which lasts until sun down.  The kids find it is hard to come up with worth wishes, and each one gets them into unexpected difficulties.


Nickelodeon will launch its new live-action series, Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures, over the July 4th holiday weekend.  A buddy comedy, Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures premieres with back-to-back episodes on Friday, July 1, at 8p and 8:30p, which will be followed by two more new episodes on Saturday, July 2 at 8p and Sunday, July 3 at 7p.  The series will air regularly on Sundays at 7p. Set in Southern California, Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures revolves around two lifelong pals (and surfers), Bucket (Taylor Gray) and Skinner (Dillon Lane), and their unending quest for awesomeness while still dealing with high school and daily life issues.  The network will support the series launch with a multiplatform effort, which includes sneak peeks and promotional behind-the-scenes content streaming on and via its wireless partners.  Additionally, following each episode premiere, clips will be available via Nick’s wireless partners and full episodes will be downloadable in HD on iTunes, Sony, Xbox and Amazon.  Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures will also launch in the summer-themed “Surf and Burp” category on Nick’s video-on-demand.  Bucket & Skinner’s Epic Adventures is developed by executive producer Tom Lynch (The Troop, South of Nowhere, The Secret World of Alex Mack) and created by executive producers Boyce Bugliari and Jamie McLaughlin (Quintuplets, Kid Notorious) under The Tom Lynch Company banner. Jonathan Stark (According to Jim) also serves as executive producer.

Disney Channel has big plans for its animated series Phineas and Ferb this summer, including a new TV movie, new episodes of Take Two with Phineas and Ferb talk show, a new soundtrack and DVD release, bus tour, touring live show and interactive games and theme park attraction, among other things:

  • Perry the Platy-bus On Tour, a customized Airstream trailer featuring Perry the Platypus from the animated series, kicks off Monday, July 11 in NYC.  It will then make its way to San Diego’s Comic-Con International (July 21-24) and then to Anaheim for Disney D23 Expo (August 19-21) (full schedule TBA).  Fans can visit the bus and play video games including the new 3D video game, The Movie Game: The Dimension of Doooom!  This game title, and a 2D Yourself activity, will begin rolling out on the new Phineas and Ferb supersite Friday, June 17 on and
  • New episodes of the talk show Take Two with Phineas and Ferb will debut this summer featuring guests David Beckham, Selena Gomez, Larry King, Howie Mandel, Jason Segel and Shawn White.
  • The new Disney Channel Original Movie, Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nd Dimension premieres: Friday, August 5 on Disney Channel at 8p with a mobile simulcast on Sprint TV and MobiTV; Saturday, August 13 on Disney XD at 8p; and Saturday, August 20 on ABC TV at 8p.  From Monday, August 1, on-demand previews of the movie begin on Disney Channel’s on Demand SVOD via Cablevision, Time Warner, Verizon and AT&T.  Disney Interactive Studios will release a video game based on the new TV movie for Wii, Nintendo DS handheld systems and PlayStation 3 this summer.
  • Disney Records will release the soundtrack Phineas and Ferb: Across the 1st and 2nd Dimensions on Tuesday, August 2.  A two-disc Ultimate Fan Pack, which features a DVD, digital copy of the movie, eight digital music tracks, deleted scenes and a bonus episode, will be available from Tuesday, August 23.
  • A Phineas and Ferb junior novel, joke and novelty book, and an official 96-page magazine will be available Monday, July 27 from Disney Publishing Worldwide.
  • This month, Disney’s California Adventure and Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios debut Phineas and Ferb: We’re Making a Movie, an interactive live experience.
  • Disney Theatrical Group will launch Disney’s Phineas and Ferb: The Best LIVE Tour EVER!, a live touring stage show produced by Feld Entertainment that will visit 80 towns across the country, beginning August 21.

Turner Broadcasting System Italy acquires preschool-aimed 3D HD CGI animated series Dive Olly Dive (seasons one and two, 104×11) from Atlantyca Entertainment.  The deal includes pay and free TV rights throughout Italy and will see Dive Olly Dive! premiere on Boomerang in Italy on Monday, June 13, 2011.  Dive Olly Dive! is a co-production between Mike Young Productions (US), Flying Bark Productions (Australia), KI.KA (Germany), Telegael Teo (Ireland), Atlantyca Entertainment (Italy) and GDC (China).

Digital content network Babelgum announced it has picked up an additional 12 episodes of the pop culture parody Kids Reenact ( ), which features kids acting out popular shows and movies. The kids will kick things off with a 4-episode take-off on ABC’s The Bachelorette over the next two weeks, followed by parodies of summer blockbusters including “Hangover 2,” “Green Lantern,” “Cowboys and Aliens” and “Planet of the Apes.”

Classic Media in collaboration with World Events Productions (WEP), a producer of animated TV content, will release a new Voltron: Defender of the Universe DVD this summer.  Entitled Voltron: The Legend Begins, the new DVD title will include the first seven episodes of the 1980s animated TV series and will be available from August 16, 2011.  Among the bonus features on the DVD are: Voltron 101  an introduction to the Voltron series; Voltron Art Slide Show, which includes professional and fan art; and a Voltron Force Sizzle Reel  a look at the new Voltron Force series that is set fiver years after the classic series concluded.

Zinkia Entertainment completes a new broadcast deal and appoints further licensing agents for Pocoyo in Latin America.  In a new free-to-air broadcast deal, Televideo (Albavision) acquires Pocoyo for Peru, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Dominican Republic, Paraguay and Argentina.  Additionally, Zinkia inks new third party licensing agent deals for Pocoyo including: a multi-territory deal with IMC International Merchandising Consultants (Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay); BLG Brand and Licensing Group (Brazil); Doce & Friends (Chile); and Andelo (Peru).  In Mexico, Pocoyo continues to be represented by Televisa Consumer Products.  Zinkia has also recently signed a multi-territory deal with Elite Global for the distribution of toys, including basic plush, bath toys and the Bump n’ Go Racing Car (Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, Paraguay, Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Caribbean Islands).


Majesco Entertainment Company teams with the National Basketball Association (NBA) to develop a video game basketball franchise.  The new NBA video game will utilize motion-based gaming technology and is slated for release in spring 2012.

Joy Tashjian Marketing Group (JTMG) completes licensing deals for the new family-targeted 3D feature film Dolphin’s Tale, which is produced by Alcon Entertainment (The Blind Side) and distributed by Warner Bros. for release on September 23, 2011.  Licensees for Dolphin’s Tale include: Scholastic  which will publish a Junior novelization and a Reader for the movie; Crave Interactive; Beverly Hills Teddy Bear (all sizes of plush and toys); Trevco (t-shirts and sweatshirts); Mad Dog (kid’s sleepwear); other licensees include Donjo Designs.

The Jim Henson Company has recently finalized deals with new international licensees for a number of its brands:

  • Dinosaur Train: In France include Alcara (charms, frames and collectibles); ATM (bags and accessories); Bagtrotter (back-to-school items); Editions Gladius (games); CCI (footwear); and France Television (storybooks and activity books).  Additional licenses have been signed with Belltex (home goods and accessories) for France and French speaking Benelux; and TV Mania (branded apparel) in France and French speaking Europe.  For Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, new licensees include Nelostuote Oy (games); and for Norway with publisher Cappelen Damm AS (audio books and storybooks).  Across Latin America, new licensees in Brazil include Art Bag Rio Comercio (backpacks, lunch boxes, pencil cases, and key chains); Editora Fundamento (storybooks); Emporium de Ideias (stickers and albums, activity and coloring books); G Baby (apparel); and Alphafestas (party goods). New deals in include Daysal (lunch boxes and lunch sets); and Editorial Atlantida (storybooks, activity, coloring and sticker books and magazines – to include Uruguay and Paraguay). In Australia and New Zealand, Crown and Andrews (board games and jigsaw puzzles).
  • Sid The Science Kid: New publishing licenses include: Actes Sud and SDP  Le Livre Club for France, Belgium and Switzerland; and with Editorial Vertice for Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile and Peru; in Brazil, Editora Fundamento was signed for publishing; In Korea, Cake also signs on for publishing; for non-publishing in Chile Party Express (party goods).
  • Fraggle Rock: new licensees include FIPO Group (apparel) in the Nordic region; Smart Marketing Promocional (housewares) in Spain; Loud Clothing and J Fox Limited (apparel) in the UK and Ireland; and Somerbond Limited (accessories) in the UK. Henson has also partnered with new licensing agents for the brand outside the US, including Alphanim (France), Segal Licensing (Canada) and Carmen Ariza (for Europe excluding France, the UK and the Nordic Region).
  • New licensees for Skatelab: Tennessee (back-to-school products and stationery items) for France; Leisurewear International (apparel) for the UK.  For Australia and New Zealand, licenses have been granted to Caprice Australia (housewares); and Hot Springs (apparel). Also signing on for Australia are TMI Australia and Vimwood Australia (both for accessories).  Additionally, Segal Licensing has been appointed as the agent for the brand in Canada.
  • Labyrinth: Henson enters into a deal with Truffle Shuffle (apparel) for the UK and Ireland.


Kidz Entertainment/EEMC re-brands itself as Ink as of this week. While Ink will continue its brand licensing efforts in kid-targeted entertainment arena, it is also growing its scope to include lifestyle brands such as its recent deal with Discovery, in the Nordics and Eastern Europe, as well as Russia.  In addition to a new name, the rebrand includes a new visual look and will feature a new website (  The rebrand was lead by Designit, a European strategic design consultant.
