Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 7, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

OMD and MTV Networks have entered into a multi-network, multi-platform deal, as part of the 2006/2007 upfront season, estimated to be worth $300+ million.  Under the pact more than 30 OMD clients have combined their linear and digital ad budgets and will have the first go at advertising opportunities across MTVN’s range of screens, including TV, broadband, VOD, podcasting and wireless as well as its digital properties such as Neopets, Xfire, IFilm, and GameTrailers.com.  The deal is unique in that it is MTVN’s first upfront deal to incorporate many of its screen offerings in addition to its digital assets.  Additionally, as part of the agreement MTVN and OMD will team-up on a joint research project that will continue looking at concepts of engagement and transference, focusing on platform to platform transference.  The deal includes MTVN channels MTV, MTV2, mtvU, VH1, VH1 Classic, CMT, The N, Comedy Central, Spike TV, Nickelodeon, Nick-at-Nite, TV Land and Logo, as well as online sites mtv.com, vh1.com, cmt.com, comedycentral.com, nick.com, nickjr.com, the-n.com, tvland.com, nickatnite.com, logoonline.com, spiketv.com and the soon-to-launch website, parentsconnect.com. The deal also includes MTVN’s newly acquired IFILM, GameTrailers.com, Neopets and Xfire.

Dentsu Inc. and Mitsubishi Corporation have formed a new strategic business partnership for the sale, production and rights management of a range of Japanese animated properties, through their respective subsidiaries, to be distributed worldwide.  An experienced producer, Dentsu has a library of animated content and Mitsubishi will handle the marketing of the new and existing kid-targeted animated properties.  Additionally, Dentsu and Mitsubishi have also established a joint (50/50) investment fund to develop and produce new Japanese animated properties and related online and mobile properties.  Dentsu’s Geneon Entertainment will now operate as the joint venture, with Mitsubishi’s d-rights Inc., acquiring 34% stake in the company.  The first property to be marketed/distributed under the new partnership will be the TV series Guardian of the Sacred Spirit.  Based on a kid’s book, Guardian of the Sacred Spirit is produced by Production I.G. Inc., and is slated to bow on NHK in spring 2007.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The Weinstein Company returns home from Cannes having made a bevy of sales around the world for Exodus Film Group’s CG animated movie Igor.  TWC’s International Distribution group new distribution deals for the comedy, currently in pre-production, include Momentum (UK), TF1 (France), Constantine (Germany & Switzerland), Aurum (Spain), West Film Group (Russia), EEAP (Eastern Europe), RCV (the Benelux), Europa (Brazil), Italia (Middle East), Lusomundo (Portugal), Jung-A Entertainment (South Korea), Film Pop (Turkey), and Applause (Taiwan).  Based on a screenplay by Chris McKenna (American Dad) and produced by Jon D. Eraklis and Max Howard, the movie revolves around Igor, as in the mad scientist’s lab assistant, who has his own dream: to become a scientist himself and win the top prize at the Evil Science Fair.

In other Weinstein Company news… the company is producing a live-action adaptation of Mulan. TWC is in the final stages of a deal with Chinese actress Ziyi Zhang to take the starring role in the movie.  The deal with Zhang is to be a three picture pact.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Kids’ WB! will launch the new anime style series, Spider Riders (52 x 30 min), with two episodes back-to-back on Saturday, June 17, at 10:30a, the series takes up residence in its regular 30 minute time period from July 8, at 10:30a.  Spider Riders is a co-production between Coliseum, Cookie Jar Entertainment’s action brand, Japanese ad agency Yomiko, with Japanese animation studio, Bee Train.  Additional programming details include another two back-to-back episodes of Spider Riders will air on Kids’ WB on June 24, 10:30a, and over the July 4 holiday weekend the series will be featured in a two hour mini-marathon, July 1, 10a-12p.  Spider Riders currently airs on Teletoon in Canada and Japan’s TV Tokyo.

Wulffmorgenthaler!  Now say that five times!  That is the name of MTV Networks International‘s (MTVNI) first animated series specifically produced for mobile.  Based on the comic strip of the same name, co-production between MTVNI and Danes Mikael Wulff/Anders Morgenthaler (ahh, now you see the title’s meaning) is comprised of 20 short animated clips made available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.  They were produced by Scandinavian production company Zentropa Studios.  The clips are now available exclusively on the network’s mobile TV channels and mobile VOD in the U.S., Australia, Europe and Asia for the next 8 weeks.  MTVNI will then launch the shorts on its broadband outlets including MTV Overdrive.  Wondering what the clips are about…here’s a storyline snippet…In “Frank’s Pimple,” a character goes about trying to rid himself of a pimple in the wrong way.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Apple has introduced a new iPod U2 Special Edition ($329), under a partnership between Apple, U2 and Universal music Group.  The audio/video iPod (30GB) is all black stainless steel with a red click wheel and features an engraving of the members of the band.  Those who purchase the new iPod U2 will get 30 minutes of exclusive U2 video downloadable from the iTunes store.

Nokia has launched its first global digital retail distribution website that is selling games for its N-Gage, the combo phone and handheld game device.  N-Gage users can download games to a PC.  Note though the PC must have a compatible memory card reader and memory card, then the game files can be installed into the N-Gage unit.

Six Flags, Inc., and Razor & Tie have joined together to launch Club Kidz Bop, a new live concert series that will be feature at all of the Six Flags US parks beginning from June 7.  The concert tour is based on and features music from the Kidz Bop CDs.

STONE SOUP

An increase in broadband households, PC ownership and more internet ready video game consoles/systems are three of the key requisites expected to drive the global online gaming market to $13+ billion by 2011, up from $3.4 billion in 2005, according to new report from DFC Intelligence.  The growth trend will continue to be supported by an increase in consumer subscription services, the emergence of digital distribution – that is driving online game buying by casual gamers, along with the ever increasing acceptance of in-game advertising.  The report points to massively multiplayer online games (MMOG) as being the current leading online game category and anticipates that will continue, explaining that despite the fact that MMOG’s appeal to a relatively small portion of the total user base, the business model is a huge revenue producer.  As for online connectivity and gaming systems, by the end of this year Sony and Nintendo will join this market following behind Microsoft’s already available Xbox Live online game service that works with its Xbox 360, with Sony’s PlayStation 3 and the Nintendo Wii.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

More executive movement at BBC Children’s with the appointment yesterday of Damian Kavanagh as Independent Commissioning Executive and Head of Scheduling, CBBC & Cbeebies.  Kavanagh will work in tandem with Anne Gilchrist, Creative Director, CBBC, in developing and overseeing content from independent producers.  He will also responsible for scheduling for digital channels, CBBC and Cbeebies, as well as for kid’s programming on BBC One and BBC Two.  Additionally, Kavanagh will be part of crafting the content and brand strategy for CBBC.  Kavanagh spent the last two years as Head of Planning and Scheduling, BBC Three. 

BBC Television has established the new post of Editorial Executive of Diversity with the aim of ensuring that programming across all the BBC channels accurately reflects the UK population, by working with each of the channels.  Mary FitzPatrick has been named to serve as the BBC’s first Editorial Executive/Diversity.  In addition to reviewing programs to assure the authentic portrayal a given group of people, FitzPatrick will also create a database of a diverse on and off-screen talent.  Marking her return to the BBC, FitzPatrick was most recently Editorial Manger/Cultural Diversity, Channel 4.

Robert Aniello joins THQ as SVP/Worldwide Marketing.  He will oversee brand development for THQ’s original franchises and licensed properties.  Aniello will report to Kelly Flock, EVP/Worldwide Publishing.  An interactive industry veteran, Aniello was most recently VP/Marketing, Jamdat/Electronic Arts.  Previously, he was VP and Director, Mattel Interactive.

RATINGS

The N’s new series Beyond The Break premiered last Friday, June 2 at 8:30-9:30p earning a 1.6 among the female teen demo, the highest rating for female teens in the time slot across broadcast and ad-supported cable networks, according to The N.
