Cynopsis: Kids!


Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 2, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Pokemon Company International and Cartoon Network will launch the newest season of the animated Pokemon series, Pokemon: DP Sinnoh League Victors, this Saturday, June 5 at 7a.  This is the 13the season of Pokemon and completes the Pokemon Diamond & Pearl storyline.  To support the new season, Cartoon Network is also hosting an action movie marathon on Saturday, running 11a-5p.  Pokemon airs daily on Cartoon Network, with original episodes airing on Saturday mornings and repeat episodes on Sundays. The show also plays Monday through Friday, on Boomerang at 8a.


McG acquires the film rights to 20-year-old author Kody Keplinger’s coming-of-age novel The Duff  (which stands for Designated Ugly Fat Friend), which he plans to produce under his Wonderland Sound and Vision banner with Vast Entertainment, per Variety.  McG will produce with Vast’s CEO Lane Shefter Bishop.  Wonderland’s Mary Viola will executive produce the movie.  Poppy will publish the young adult novel this fall 2010.


Astral Media will launch a French-language version of the commercial-free Playhouse Disney channel on July 5, 2010.  Available in Canada to Bell TV subscribers, the French-language channel will feature a combination of Disney series including La maison de Mickey (Mickey Mouse Clubhouse), Les Zic-Magines (Imagination Movers) and Agent Special Oso (Special Agent Oso), as well as original Canadian series such as Maggie et la Bete Feroce (Maggie and the Ferocious Beast), Elliot et ses amis (Elliot the Moose) and Les Doodlebops (The Doodlebops), and the new series Stella and Sam.

Canada’s Teletoon Retro ( ) will offer Rogers customers a free preview of the channel this month (now through Wednesday, June 30) available on Rogers channel 284.  The Teletoon Retro free Preview will feature kid and family-targeted programming including The Bugs Bunny and Tweety Show, Scooby-Doo, The Flintstones, Inspector Gadget, Batman: The Animated Series, Fantastic Four, ThunderCats and G.I. Joe.  The preview month will also include a special weekend Saturday-Sunday June 5-6, featuring first episodes of animated series that run on Teletoon Retro including Scooby-Doo, the Smurfs and Transformers.  This special weekend of programming will also be available on Rogers channels 01 and 59, in addition to channel 284.  The three-year-old Teletoon Retro channel is available in both English and French.  Teletoon Canada, which includes Teletoon and Teletoon Retro, is co-owned by Astral and Corus Entertainment.

Toei Animation inks new and renewal broadcast and DVD deals for several of its animated properties in Latin America.

  • Broadcast pacts include: Bandeirantes TV (Brazil) and Panamericana TV (Peru) acquire Saint Seiya; Bandeirantes TV (Brazil) also picks up Saint Seiya The Hades; Rede TV (Brazil) acquires Digimon Frontier; and Ecuavisa (Ecuador) and Televisa (Mexico) renew their deals for Dragon Ball Z.
  • DVD agreements include: Five Stars (Brazil) acquires the DVD rights to Digimon Adventure; Playarte (Brazil) renews its DVD deal for Saint Seiya; and Towers Entertainment (Mexico) picks up the DVD rights for Saint Seiya Tenkaihen (movie) and Saint Seiya.

DQ Entertainment International (DQE) enters into a three-year deal with The Copyrights Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG), under which CPLG will serve as licensing and merchandising agent for 3D animated series The Jungle Book in Canton Ticino, San Marino, Vatican City, the UK and Ireland, Spain, Portugal and Japan.  CPLG will be responsible for merchandising, publishing, and promotions and direct to retail strategies for the series.  Additionally, DQE completes a second deal for fabric-based products with NV Belltex (Belgium), which will manufacture a range of products based on The Jungle Book including tents, quilt cover sets, pillowcases, fitted sheets, curtains, decoration cushions, beach towels, ponchos, bathrobes, towels, gloves, carpets, handkerchiefs, and sleeping bags etc.  This agreement was signed through DQE co-production partners TF1 Enterprises, which serves as DQE’s licensing and merchandising agents for France.

Chorion expands The World of Beatrix Potter with a new group of licensees, retail programs and product line for Peter Rabbit across the US, UK, Australia and Asia.  Additionally, Chorion appoints Copyrights Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG) as a licensing agent to grow the licensing and merchandising program for The World of Beatrix Potter in France, Germany and Benelux, and similarly names Bulls Press as its agent for Scandinavia.  Chorion is working in tandem with Frederick Warne & Co., owner and publisher of The World of Beatrix Potter brand.  New animation is currently in development for a Peter Rabbit TV series and specials, further information including launch dates are TBA.  Chorion will attend the International Licensing Expo, where it will represent The World of Beatrix Potter for the first time for the US market.  A few new licensing deals include:

  • Pottery Barn Kids in the US will expand its Peter Rabbit bedding, nursery decor, housewares and Easter product offerings in 2011.
  • This August in Australia will see a cross-category debut of Peter Rabbit products in Toys ‘R’ Us stores including infant apparel, bedding, toy, feeding and hard goods (e.g. strollers, high chairs)
  • In London, the V&A Museum will present the exhibition, Peter Rabbit: The Tale of the Tale, which opens July 3, 2010 and runs through January 8, 2011.  The exhibit features the original illustrations, preliminary drawings, manuscripts and personal correspondence of Beatrix Potter.  Branded products will support the exhibit at retail.
  • In Asia, where 2011 is the Year of the Rabbit as well as the 40th anniversary of the publication of the Japanese-language Peter Rabbit books, there will be a range of commemorative events will be held beginning this summer.  Already this year Peter Rabbit was on of the themes of the International Rose & Gardening Show outside of Tokyo.

EA Play, a label of Electronic Arts, and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment are developing two Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows video games that will coincide with Warner Bros.’ final Harry Potter movies.  The Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part 1 game title will be release this fall 2010 for all major gaming platforms.  The game will represent a shift in tone, in keeping with the darker storyline of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.  On the movie side Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows part 1 in 3D is set to release November 19, 2010, with part 2 (also in 3D) slated for a July 15, 2011 release.

Scholastic Media completes two new licensing deals for The 39 Clues: Apex Marketing signs on to create t-shirts, which will be available at retail in fall 2010; Bioworld will develop backpacks based on the property exclusively for Boarder Group also for fall 2010.  Existing licensees include University Games, Trends, and MEAD.

Ludorum appoints Golden Bear as a new licensee for its preschool property Chuggington.  Under the deal, Golden Bear will create and manufacture Chuggington creative play products in the UK and Ireland.  Debuting in spring/summer 2011, the product line will include an electronic learning and coloring set featuring characters from the preschool series, as well as Mini Sketchers, Activity Fun Felts, a Color-in Money Box Train and Art on the Move travel set.

Fitz Roy Media appoints several new licensing agents for its kid and young adult properties around the world:

  • In Australia and New Zealand, Wild Pumpkin Licensing International is appointed to represent Secret Wings and Funny Face.  Stella Projects will rep Fido Dido.
  • Slovenia-based Maat Entertainment will serve as licensing agent for Secret Wings and Funny Face in the Balkans and throughout Eastern Europe.
  • Empire Merchandising is named to represent Fido Dido in the Philippines.
  • In Greece, Partners Plus is appointed to represent Heathcliff and Funny Face, while License2Brands will rep Fido Dido.
  • M6 will represent Funny Face and Heathcliff throughout France.
  • Mendia Licensing will represent Heathcliff in Spain.


HIT Entertainment is launching Angelina Ballerina Stars of Tomorrow, a new multi-year kid-targeted pro-social campaign.  Designed to make kids aware of the benefits of dance (all genres), including building and inspiring self-confidence, creativity, promoting physical activity, and providing kids with access to dance programs, HIT is piloting the Angelina Ballerina Stars of Tomorrow program at the Kips Bays Boys & Girls Club in the Bronx.  The pilot program is offering Angelina Ballerina Dance Classes in ballet, hip hop, Latin and African dance for K5-9.  HIT is also providing teachers with in-class materials such as Angelina Ballerina’s Tip of the Week, posters, nutrition and recipe information and videos, including a warm-up routine to begin each class base don the new animated Angelina Ballerina The Next Steps on PBS Kids.  The new initiative also features a microsite on (, which includes local news and events, ways to get involved and partners.


Nickelodeon ups two.  Antonious Porch is promoted to SVP and Deputy General Counsel/Digital Media, Global Licensing and Ancillary Businesses, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kid and Family Group.  Porch will oversee business and legal affairs in connection with deals for Nick’s hotels, resorts, theme park attractions, theatricals and touring shows, as well as working on global licensing and merchandising deals of all MTVN channels.  Porch, who joined the company in 2004 and most recently was SVP/Business and Legal Affairs, Digital Group, will continue to report Andra Shapiro, EVP/Business Affairs & General Counsel, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group and MTVN Co-General Counsel.  Additionally, Diane Longoria joins Porch’s team as VP/Business & Legal Affairs, Global Licensing and Ancillary Businesses, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group. She will report into Porch.  Most recently Longoria toiled for three years with Viacom’s legal group where she was Counsel for Corporate Transactions, specializing in mergers and acquisitions.
