Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 29, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Tribune Broadcasting inks a three-year pact with Longneedle Entertainment (Animal Atlas, Safari Tracks), under which Longneedle will produce FCC compliant E/I (educational/informational) series for broadcast on Tribune stations beginning fall 2012.  The deal calls for Longneedle to produce three half-hour series for fall 2012, which will increase to four half-hours for fall 2013.  Among the series that will be included in the 3×30 block for fall 2012, Longneedle is producing On the Spot, a fast-paced scholastic trivia show that tests audience knowledge of viewers of all ages, which get its initial premiere on Tribune stations in 2011.  The Longneedle series will broadcast on all 17 Tribune O&O stations.

Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment, Hong Kong-based Ricco Capital Holdings and Panda Partners, a joint venture of Fidelis Entertainment, join together to set up Magic Storm Entertainment, a film financing partnership to develop and produce a new film projects based on Stan Lee’s new superheroes and content around the world and positioned to appeal to Asian markets.  The first movie project will be announced soon.  Magic Storm Entertainment will be based in LA.  Fidelis Entertainment’s Eric Mika has been appointed CEO.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

SEVEN24 Films and marblemedia team to develop the new animated preschool series Little Wombat (26×11), which is based on the Little Wombat books by Charles Fuge.  The story follows the adventures of Little Wombat and his friends Mouse and Koala in the Hallow tree where they live.  The TV series will encourage kids to explore, learn and discovery new things, with the group’s adventure continuing on mobile devices (interactive digital books, bonus animated content, games, puzzles and sing alongs).  International distribution and format sales will be handled by marblemedia and Distribution360, the latter is SEVEN24 Films’ distribution arm.

Jeff Bridges hopes to bring The Giver, author Lois Lowry’s Newbery Medal winning young adult book, to the big screen, per Variety.  This is the second time Bridges and producer Nikki Silver have worked at producing a feature film adaptation of the book, and are doing so now through family-targeted movie and TV company On Screen Entertainment.  Based on The Giver, the first book in a trilogy, the movie will be written by Vadim Perelman (The House of Sand and Fog).  The movie will be produced by John Heyman, with Bridges co-producing with Silver and Neil Koenigsberg.  Since it was published in 1993, The Giver has become a staple of the curriculum at many middle and high schools.  Set in the future in what appears to be a utopian world, The Giver revolves around Jonas who having turned 12 is assigned to his career, in his case as Receiver of Memory.  Jonas’ world is one where history is not shared, but rather all history is kept by the Giver, a community elder who provides information to the society as needed to make decisions.  Jonas must learn his trade as the Receiver of Memory from the current Giver, an older man, and he becomes confused, frustrated and learns the power of knowledge.  The other two books in the series are Gathering Blue and Messenger.  The Giver has been optioned several times.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Larry King gets his wizard on when he interviews the cast of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part 2 in the one hour special, CNN Presents: A Larry King Special  Harry Potter: The Final Chapter, premiering Sunday, July 10 at 8p.  In addition to interviews with cast mates Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton, Helena Bonham Carter and Robbie Coltrane, the special includes exclusive footage from the movie.  The special also includes James and Oliver Phelps (the Weasley twins) taking viewers on a tour of the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction at the Universal Orlando Resort. The special is also set to air on CNN International.  Warner Bros. will release harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows  Part 2 on July 15.  CNN is a division of Turner Broadcasting System, which is a Time Warner Company.

ThunderCats HO!  Cartoon Network will premiere the all-new animated ThunderCats series with an hour-long special event on Friday, July 29, at 8p.  The following week, Friday, August 5, the ThunderCats series will then take up its regular weekly time slot on Cartoon Network Friday nights at 8:30p.  From Warner Bros. Animation (WBA), ThunderCats is executive produced by Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, The Looney Tunes Show), with Michael Jelenic (Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Wonder Woman) and Ethan Spaulding (Avatar: The Last Airbender) producing.  On-air, online and other support for the much-anticipated launch of the new ThunderCats includes:

  • The new series, ThunderCats will have a major presence at Comic-Con International: San Diego, including a panel discussion on Friday, July 22 (3:30p, room 6A) that will include a screening of the hour-long premiere, among other discussions and events.
  • To coincide with Comic-Con, Cartoon Network will air nine episodes from the classic ThunderCats series over the weekend of July 23. 
  • Boomerang will also host a classic ThunderCats marathon on Saturday/Sunday, July 16 and 17, and air the series daily at 5p beginning Monday, July 18.
  • CartoonNetwork.com (
  • www.cartoonnetwork.com ) will also support the new series with the launch of a new ThunderCats content, including the free game Thundera Run, debuting July 18.

  • Additionally, a free Party Pack from Warner Bros Animation will be available for download and will include various things for fans to host a ThunderCats viewing party.

American Greetings Properties (AGP) inks broadcast and home video deals for Strawberry Shortcake in Belgium.  Season one of Berry Bitty Adventures is set to broadcast on Free-TV on VTM Kzoom (Belgium) from fall 2011.  Under a deal with Original Traffic Company, Strawberry Shortcake will be available on home video in both Belgium and the Netherlands.  Strawberry Shortcake ( www.strawberryshortcake.com) debuted in 1980 as a line of social expressions, toys, videos, games, crafts and books.

MARKETING/LICENSING

MGA Entertainment expands its Lalaloopsy universe as it grants Activision Publishing the exclusive worldwide rights to develop, manufacture and distribute videos games for multiple platforms (e.g. handheld, console, PC etc.) based on the Lalaloopsy brand and characters.  The first Nintendo DS title based on the line of collectible Lalaloopsy is slated to debut for holiday of 2011.  MGA Entertainment is also developing a Lalaloopsy feature length movie, which will be released as a made-for-DVD title in spring 2012 starring the original Lalaloopsy characters.  MGA has also released a range of new Lalaloopsy and Mini Lalaloopsy toys that are available now.

Wisharoo Park, a multimedia kid-targeted property from Dancing Ducks Entertainment, and dance apparel company Capezio partner for summer viral dance-a-thon promotion, The Duckle Dance Sweepstakes Presented by Capezio and Wisharoo Park.  The contest kicks off on July 15, 2011 on the newly launched Wisharoopark.com ( www.wisharoopark.com ) with original video debut of The Duckle Dance, featuring Wisharoo Park characters Ranger Rosey and DanDan and Della Ducks, on the website so kids can watch and learn the dance.  Kids can participate by having their parents/adult record their version of the dance and uploading it to their YouTube account, then submit the YouTube video link at Wisharoopark.com by September 1, 2011.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

David Maisel, formerly Chairman/Marvel Studios and EVP, Office of CEO/Marvel Entertainment, becomes Special Advisor to Rovio. Maisel is noted launching Marvel Studios, which then released its first self-produced and self-financed films including Iron Man, and led the sale of Marvel Entertainment to Disney. As a Special Advisor, Maisel will help build Rovio’s entertainment strategy and transition it to new entertainment business arenas. He will also serve as Executive Producer of future Angry Birds films.
