Cynopsis
06/28/06
Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, June 28, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Star Jones announced yesterday on The View that she will be leaving the show in July. The additional turnover follows the departure of Meredith Vieira who will next show up on NBC’s Today, and the addition of Rosie O’Donnell in September. Jones had told People magazine back in May she felt she had been “fired” after being given notice her contract would not be picked up. According to comments made yesterday by Barbara Walters to the Associated Press, Jones’ contract would not be renewed because research revealed viewers were turned off by her lavish wedding plans and her dramatic weight loss. Jones learned of that decision just days before the Rosie casting announcement. While the workings behind Jones departure have been known to Jones and Barbara Walters for months, the announcement on the air yesterday came as a surprise to Walters.
Tonight’s Premiere:
AMC: Hu$tle at 10p
Today’s Finale:
ABC: Good Morning America’s Charles Gibson finale at 7am
The premiere of AMC‘s first original movie Broken Trail last Sunday gave the network its highest recorded ratings ever for night one of the two-part film. The western lassoed a 7.6 HH rating and 6.7 million viewers based on HH delivery. The movie, starring Robert Duvall and co-starring Thomas Haden Church, was also cable’s #1 telecast 2006 to date and the second most watched cable movie since 1995, again based on HH delivery.
The live finale of Spike TV’s The Ultimate Fighter last Saturday, June 24 was the most watched UFC event in history. With M18-49 the show delivered a 2.9 rating and nearly 1.5 million viewers; M18-34 it brought in a 3.8 rating and one million viewers. According to data provided by Spike, this show delivered more M18-49 and M18-34 viewers in the time period than any other broadcast or cable channel.
ABC Family had a good night Monday when its original scripted drama Kyle XY premiere with a 0.9 A18-34 rating and a 1.1 A18-49 rating. In addition, it brought in more than 2.6 million total viewers. This series about a mysterious boy with no past and no belly button ranks as ABC Family’s highest rated original series in the history of the network. Starting this Friday, the first four episodes will be repurposed weekly ABC at 9p.
TV Land will premiere a six-part limited series My First Time tonight at 10p. Each half-hour will chronicle the first “big break” of TV stars and look at sometimes never-before-seen footage of performances. The first episode features Henry Winkler and Katey Sagal.
CHANNELBLAST, the first fully-interactive, live digital broadcast network will roll out with original, live online video programming today. The first tier of programming airing on Wednesdays and Thursdays will include 15-minute live shorts in music, comedy and news commentary categories. Late this summer and fall, the second tier of programming will follow which will includes scripted and reality genres. Each show will engage viewers with interactive elements such as chatrooms, live phone-ins and webcams. Viewing is accessed through ChannelBlast.com through specially-designed ChannelPages. The programs set to debut today are:
- NewzViewz: a news/talk show scheduled each Wednesday and Thursday at 9p where citizen viewers can chime in with their opinions on news topics selected by other viewers.
- Room 1015: a music show airing Thursdays at 10:15p that follows the careers of aspiring independent bands, hosted by former VH-1 personality, Jim Kaminski.
- VidiotsLive: a live improvised comedy and video show that airs on Wednesdays at 10p, with interactive segments and viewer voting.
ION Media Networks, Inc. and Warner Bros. Domestic Cable Distribution have struck a programming deal giving ION a package of classic TV series and movies to air on its i television network, which reaches more than 90 million homes. ION has acquired the broadcast rights to such memorable TV series as Welcome Back Kotter, Chico and the Man, Alice, and Growing Pains among others, and several movies including Amadeus, All the President’s Men, Victor/Victoria.
NBC’s The Office will premiere 10 stand-alone webisodes on NBC.com July 13. Each webisode will be 2-3 minutes in length and will star the same accounting staff of the Dunder Mifflin paper company in a serialized whodunit.
Equity Broadcasting Corporation, which will merge with Coconut Palm Acquisition Corporation, will purchase WBLU/Lexington. The station will become a hybrid MyNetworkTV and Retro Television Network affiliate.
Okay, GH fans – this one’s for you: Another character from the past will return to daytime TV when Genie Francis reprises her famous role of Laura Spencer on ABC’s General Hospital in mid-October. Genie’s arrival in Port Charles will coincide with ABC Daytime’s 25th anniversary celebration of the wedding of Luke and Laura. That episode, which aired on November 16, 1981 to be exact and watched by more than 30 million viewers, still holds the record today as being the most watched daytime TV show in television history.
FUEL TV, from Fox Cable Networks, will surpass 20 million subscribers this week, just prior to its third anniversary. The surge in subscribers comes mostly from DIRECTV, which will move the action sports lifestyle network to its Total Choice package offering this week.
Scripps Networks will launch Food Network HD on June 30, joining its sister hi-def network, HGTV HD. Both HD networks will be carried in the U.S. as well as internationally in Japan via an agreement with the Japan News Broadcasting Corporation. Domestically, HGTV HD and Food Network HD will have carriage with one of the large satellite providers giving both a national distribution. Other cable providers include Wide Open West in the Chicago, Detroit, Columbus and Cleveland markets; Buckeye Cable in Toledo; and Sunflower Broadband and Everest Connections in Kansas City.
mSpot, the mobile radio service that streams close to 100 channels of music, talk, entertainment and more to mobile phones, will now partner with Radio Disney, adding the kid and tween radio network as one of its channel offerings.
News-Press & Gazette led by Henry and David Bradley, affectionately known to me as Hank and Little David, has picked up two more local TV stations – KRDO/Colorado Springs and KJCT/Grand Junction for $45 million from Pikes Peak Broadcasting Co. This acquisition brings the group’s total station count to seven. No, not everyone calls them Hank and Little David, just family. Well done guys.
For those of you who subscribe to Cynopsis via your Yahoo account – we know you have not received Cynopsis since some time last week when Yahoo unceremoniously decided to stop delivering this daily to you. In fact, it’s not even showing up in your bulk mail – I know because I also have a Yahoo account and can’t email this stuff to myself. We have attempted to contact Yahoo several times each day for a week and have not received any sort of response back. To that end, I have only two suggestions: complain loudly to Yahoo; and re-subscribe to Cynopsis using a different email service. Also, make sure you have [email protected] in your address book and/or Allowed Senders list. In the meantime, rest assured we’re doing all we can to reach Yahoo and rectify the problem.
CBS‘s Friday night series Close to Home will get a new regular cast member next season – David James Elliott, last seen regularly on JAG. Elliott will play a new DA in town, in from the big city. Leaving the series are John Carroll Lynch, the town’s DA for season #1, and Christian Kane.
Melanie Hall has been appointed Director/Marketing for Habbo, the online community and gaming site for teens that is operated by Sulake Corporation. Her responsibilities include all marketing activity including branding, promotions and advertisings for the Habbo property.
Tamara Franklin is the new VP/Business Development for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., reporting to Dennis Quinn, EVP/Business Development. In this position, Tamara will develop and execute non-linear platform distribution for the Turner properties with an emphasis on wireless initiatives. She is based at the company’s Atlanta office.
Weigel Broadcasting Company, owner of WCIU and WWME/Chicago has tapped Paul Wittcoff as its Director/Marketing and Advertising. Paul will direct all the marketing efforts for both stations in the Chicago market.
E! International has named Justin Davison as Ad Sales Director for its new in-house international advertising sales division based in London. Reporting to Brad Wald, Managing Director/Europe Middle East Africa for E! Networks, Justin will manage the advertising sales efforts in the Pan-European territory, develop client-tailored multi-layered packages and will be involved in strategic multiple platform campaigns.
Lauren Frasca has been hired at Atlas Media as its Senior Manager/Development, reporting to Kaki Kirby, SVP/Business Development and Special Projects. Lauren will be responsible for all research and development for the company’s television projects.
Pamela K. Halle has joined the non-traditional marketing company, Channel M, as its Senior Account Director.
David Tochterman has been hired to develop CHANNELBLAST and be Executive Producer for all original video content created for the interactive, live digital network.
