Cynopsis: Kids!
6/27/07
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 27, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Turner’s Adult Swim takes another lap, as the late-night programming block, which runs on Cartoon Network overnight, expands to seven nights a week with the addition of Fridays. Adult Swim arrives on Friday nights beginning July 6, 2007, with a Family Guy marathon (11p-2a). The Adult Swim weekly schedule will now go like this: Monday-Saturday, 11p-6a and Sundays 10p-6a. Sure the block is targeted to young adults 18+, but tweens and younger teens are there too, my kids can’t be the only ones … and yes, that does make me the worst parent ever, mostly because I watch with them. Launched in September 2001 with three hours of programming two nights a week, by January 2003 Adult Swim had stretched to five nights a week (Sunday-Thursday) and two years later in March 2005 moved to an overnight scheduled 11p-6a.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Fred Seibert and his Frederator Studios unveiled plans to launch Frederator Films, which will produce 2D animated movies with budgets below $20 million. Seibert is forming the division with Kevin Kolde and Eric Gardner; all three will serve as producers on the film projects. Frederator plans to produce two films a year. The first three projects on the Frederator Films development slate are:
- A feature length movie based on Samurai Jack animated series, which aired on Cartoon Network. Series creator Grenndy Tartakovsky has signed on to write and direct the movie.
- The Neverhood, a film based on the cult favorite claymation PC-based computer adventure game created by Doug TenNapel and released by DreamWorks Studios in 1996. TenNapel has signed on to write and direct the feature length film will be shot in Claymation.
- The Seven Deadly Sins is a hip-hop animated feature, which will be written, designed, and directed by flash animator Dan Meth. Outspoken personality and boxing promoter Don King has been tapped to lend his voice to one of the characters on the project.
Production on the first film, Seven Deadly Sins, is expected to begin in fall of 2007. The company’s principal production will be located in Hollywood and New York.
MORE KIDS STUFF
Genius Products and EMI Music North America’s Christian Music Group (CMG) signed an agreement under which CMG will serve as the exclusive distributor of Genius’ products for Christian retail markets. EMI CMG Distribution has 2,300 retail locations nationwide. New titles in genres such as sports, live action family movies, lifestyle, animated kids programming are slated to begin rolling out from 3Q 2007.
Launched earlier this year, Your Look magazine, the teen/young adult 16-20 targeted periodical from the folks at In Style, will cease publication after just two issues, per Women’s Wear Daily. A quarterly, the second issue of Your Look went on sale on June 8, 2007. In Style and Your Look are part Time Inc. publications. According to the report there is no word yet about the fate of the magazine’s website http://instyleyourlook.com/. WWD also notes that the UK edition of CosmoGirl, a Hearst Corp. publication, will shutdown after the August 2007 edition. CosmoGirl has been published in the UK for six years.
MARKETING/LICENSING
This Friday, June 29, Mattel and FAO Schwarz will debut the new “styled by me Barbie doll” area at the FAO Schwarz store on Fifth Avenue in NYC. The special Barbie boutique section of the store is 1,500 square feet and features touch-screen computer stations where Barbie fans can choose their own doll from one of seven (including a selection of skin tones, hair color and style) and then move on to select both her wardrobe and accessories. Once the design is complete, and paid for, the magic Barbie elves behind the scenes prepare the customized doll to the consumer’s specifications and send her out on an electronic mini runway for a spin. Thereafter, she goes into a special box/carrying case and onto the arm of designer consumer. The cost gets up there, with dolls beginning at about $65.
Universal Studios Home Entertainment and The Hatchery LLC will release the direct-to-DVD title, R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It, on September 4, 2007. The first in a series of family-targeted suspense stories, R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour: Don’t Think About It youth stars Emily Osment, Cody Linley and Brittany Curran along with Tobin Bell (of the Saw movie franchise). The film features an original screenplay penned by Dan Angel and Billy Brown. Additionally, Osment makes her singing debut with her performance of the movie’s theme song, I Don’t Think About It, and a music video of the song, which will be included on the DVD.
Josie and the Pussycats

STONE SOUP
The market for products purchased by US teens, which includes upwards of 25.6-million teens, is expected to grow slightly over the next five years, increasing from $189.7 billion in 2006 to $208.7 billion in 2011, despite an estimated 3% decline in the 12 to 17-year-old population in that same period, according to The Teens Market in the US, a new report from market research publisher Packaged Facts. Teen spending money, which is a conglomeration of money from jobs, allowances, cash gifts and “as needed” money from Mom and Dad, is expected to increase by about +3.5% annually, boosting the collective teen income by +14.4% from $79.7 billion in 2006 to $91.1 billion in 2011.
