Cynopsis: Kids!
06.26.13

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 26, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP HEADLINES

Expanded regulations under the Federal Trade Commission’s Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) go into effect July 1, and privacy groups including Center for Digital Democracy will begin closely monitoring web sites and apps targeting children 12 and under on that date to make sure they comply. CDD will be focusing initially on “major kids sites” including those operated by Cartoon Network, Disney and Nickelodeon, according to Jeff Chester, executive director of the organization. CDD also plans to step up its education efforts to help parents and teachers self-determine whether a site is in compliance with the new rules. The organization is highlighting several red flags in particular, including sites that: ask children to upload photos of themselves; collect location information; send push notifications from an app that remain active when the app is not in use.

TIME OUT WITH… DISNEY’S RITA FERRO

Now that Upfront season is behind us, Disney’s EVP, Media Sales & Marketing, shares with CynKids her insider’s perspective on the hottest kid-focused trends and topics from this year’s advertiser-wooing playground. Here’s Ferro in her own words on…

Biggest kids trends
Kids’ advertisers have followed the adult marketplace in regard to digital investment. That’s because due to the consumption numbers, advertisers can no longer ignore children’s video usage, and more clients than ever before have expressed an interest in [screen] agnostic deals. The kids’ marketplace is just starting to move, so it’s too early to tell if our clients and agencies will move forward with them.

Mom’s the word
Mom-targeted advertisers are really using kids’ networks as a place to talk to mom, and using cross-platform executions to help drive the mom and families co-viewing message.

Television as multi-screen anchor
Most cross-platform deals in the past two years include TV as a key component of the cross-platform execution. In the past, we have had some smaller cross-media deals that were print/online, online/radio or radio/print, but these tended to be clients with smaller budgets and a small percentage of our total cross-platform deals. Our cross media, big integrated deals are primarily family-focused–mom and child–and [still] include TV to anchor the program with a hit show or franchise. Many of our Disney Channel Original Movies are great examples of this.

Transmedia mania
These deals are usually large and therefore require greater expertise. Transmedia requires client and agencies to provide clear goals so that the execution we provide as a media partner delivers the success against metrics they are looking for. There also needs to be strong coordination and cooperation between the digital and linear agencies, and between planning and buying teams.  As these deals touch many platforms and areas, they require greater lead times to develop and sell through deals, and need a dedicated execution team that knows how to maximize the opportunity and run them.

This year’s strongest kid advertiser categories
The kids’ tablet category will be very competitive this fall and as a result we are seeing new opportunities with from these clients. Video games continue to be strong. The food category will continue to grow as we start to see these companies invest more behind CFBAI-compliant products. The cereal category in particular will have many brands that will be compliant in 2014.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

Nickelodeon set July 1 as launch date for the new sketch comedy TV show it’s developing with YouTube channel AwesomenessTV. The TV show, also called AwesomenessTV, will be hosted by Daniella Monet (Victorious) and will air for 13 weeks every Monday night at 8p. AwesomenessTV recently launched a multichannel network on YouTube, allowing indie content creators to join the network and have access to its audience development, distribution, and monetization resources. Now, AwesomenessTV has launched a contest that will give one of its network stars the chance to appear on the TV show via a video they produced and submitted.

The Doc Files, a short-form series extension of Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins, will run July 2226 on Disney Channel (9:25a) and Disney Junior (7:55). Episodes will also be available on DisneyJunior.com in conjunction with their linear premiere. The Doc Files offers a glimpse into Doc’s keen deductive skills as she shares an in-depth look at specific cases and diagnoses after the clinic doors close for the day. Produced using a combination of CG and 2D flash animation, each episode opens with Doc dictating a toy patient’s chart and recalling how she solved the case from allergies to splinters to the importance of healthy eating and exercise.

ABC has renewed Litton’s globe-trotting series Born To Explore With Richard Wiese through the 2016 season. The new season launches Oct. 5 and will see Wiese and the crew journeying to destinations including Scotland, South Africa, India and Zambia.

Tenkai Knights, an animated series about a quartet of unlikely, world-saving heroes, is headed to Cartoon Network later this year from Spin Master Entertainment and Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions Co. The new series will be supported by a heavy dose of webisodes, an interactive web site and robust toy line.

Happy Days creator Garry Marshall will guest on the Nick comedy See Dad Run, reuniting him with the show’s star Scott Baio, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Marshall will play TV dad to Baio’s David on the show within the show.

The Real World, only preppier? ABC Family is hitting the beach this summer with new unscripted drama The Vineyard, which captures summer’s ebb and flow for 11 locals and “wash-ashores” (that’s slang for the summer crop) living and working on Martha’s Vineyard for the summer. Series premieres Tuesday, July 23, 10p.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Bento Box Entertainment, the studio home of Bob’s Burgers, is expanding into original animated content with the hiring of Mike Clements as head of the company’s newly formed creative development and original programming division. Clements’ hiring comes as Bento Box is gearing up for the launch of its animated original comedy created for Hulu, The Awesomes. co-created and exec-produced by SNL’s Seth Meyers and Mike Shoemaker of Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

Hyper Hippo Productions is inching closer to launch on its tactical game for ages 10-plus, Mech Mice. The game launches in open beta July 9, with a rollout on Mac and PC in the fall to be followed by mobile platforms later this year.

ABC Family continues to feed the social media pipe. Cassi Thomson of Switched At Birth and Cierra Ramirez of the network’s The Fosters participated in live Twitter chats during the East Coast feeds of the series on Monday, followed by live Twitter chats by Pretty Little Liars star Tyler Blackburn and Brittany Curran of Twisted on Tuesday.

CYNKIDS SPOTLIGHT

As if we need more reasons to love Steve Carell. The Despicable Me 2 star chickens-out, literally, in an adorable new promo airing on Sprout for the second season of The Chica Show that’s an excellent example of synergy among NBCU film and television departments. In the clip, Carell makes a call to Kelly of Sprout’s Costume Coop to inquire about a minion outfit. We find out Kelly is clearly a big Steve Carell fan, and Chica is an equally big fan of minions. Season two of The Chica Show debuts July 29 on Sprout; Universal’s Despicable Me 2 bows July 3. http://bit.ly/10hYJYd

Lucy Hood has been named president/COO of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Hood, who replaces the retiring Alan Perris, previously was executive director of the Institute for Communication Technology Management at USC.
