The Democratic National Convention Committee made Comcast Corporation the Convention’s official cable television and VOD provider. Comcast will provide complete Spanish-language coverage of the Democratic Convention from the Pepsi Center in Denver from August 25-28 via online streaming at DemConvention.com. This is the first time a national political convention has been simulcast in Spanish and made available to a worldwide audience. Additionally, Comcast will offer speech highlights and Spanish-language content from each night through its national VOD service to its more than 16 million Comcast digital cable subscribers. The VOD content will also be available for distribution on other cable systems across the U.S.

Beginning soon after the July 4th holiday, Food Network will introduce the first of six new series this summer:

  • Grill It! with Bobby Flay – Thirteen viewers auditioned for the chance to grill beside Chef Bobby Flay. Premieres July 6 at 9a.
  • How’d That Get On My Plate? – Host Sunny Anderson follows a single ingredient from its origins to the plate. Premieres July 7 at 930p.
  • Road Tasted with the Neelys – Pat and Gina Neely visit several cities where they put the spotlight on family-owned specialty food product businesses. Premieres July 22 at 930p.
  • Food Detectives – Ted Allen hosts this show that uses science to test various food myths. Premieres July 29 at 9p.
  • Ask Aida – Aida Mollenkamp cooks while solving viewer’s cooking problems in this interactive series. Premieres August 2 at 1230p.
  • The Cooking Loft – Chef Alexandra Guarnaschelli invites four cooking students to her cooking loft for lessons and tips. Premieres August 31 at 12p.

CBS ordered six more episodes of Million Dollar Password hosted by Regis Philbin. Airing on Sundays at 8p, the game show so far has averaged 9.46 million viewers, a 2.0/6 among A18-49 and a 2.6/8 with A25-54. FremantleMedia North America Inc. produces.

FX will pay approximately $11 million for the exclusive cable network-window rights to air the Sony film You Don’t Mess With the Zohan starring Adam Sandler, reported Variety. FX’s window opens in 2010 following the exclusive pay-TV run on Starz. Sony may also try to sell one or two runs of Zohan to a broadcast network within the license terms of the cable contract.

Discovery Communications and Blockbuster Inc. formed a partnership where nonfiction series and programs from Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, TLC, Discovery Kids and The Military Channel will be sold in more than 2,500 participating Blockbuster stores nationwide. More than three dozen titles in total will be offered such as Discovery Channel’s Man vs. Wild and Dirty Jobs; Animal Planet’s Meerkat Manor; TLC’s Best of Little People Big World; The Military Channel’s Wings and Battlefield Diaries; and other specials like Discovery Channel’s Shark Week and Planet Earth. Some Blockbuster stores will also have dedicated Discovery-branded displays and trailers promoting the shows will air on its in-store television network.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The final results for the week of June 16, 2008:
NBC: 7.99 million total viewers and 2.1/9 A25-54
ABC: 7.04 million total viewers and 1.8/8 A25-54
CBS: 5.71 million total viewers and 1.4/6 A25-54

Starting July 15, TLC is offering viewers a wedding block as season two of Say Yes to the Dress produced by Half Yard Productions opens at 8p followed by the series debut of Rock the Reception at 830p. In each episode of Rock the Reception, married choreography team Napoleon and Tabitha D’Umo work with two different couples as they rehearse a first dance routine for the wedding reception.

Also premiering on July 15 will be MTV’s latest reality competition series From G’s to Gents at 10p. Fonzworth Bentley will mentor and life-coach the young male contestants as they participate in various challenges to drop their bad boy images and make changes that will alter their lives. The winner will receive $100,000 to start their new life.

Telemundo announced plans to debut a new live two-hour show, Levantate in the morning day part. Produced by Telemundo’s WKAQ/Puerto Rico, the show will be a combination of talk with entertainment news, current events and viewer interactivity woven in. Levantate will premiere after Telemundo finishes covering the 2008 Olympic Games.

Spike TV’s live finale of The Ultimate Fighting Championship last Saturday (9p) punched in a 1.9 rating with M18-49 and a 2.3 rating among M18-34.

Raycom Media is selling WTVR/Richmond to Sinclair Broadcast Group for $85 million, according to TVNewsday. Sinclair already owns the FOX affiliate in Richmond, WRLH. Since the FCC prohibits the single ownership of two top-rated TV stations in a market, Sinclair will spin-off WRLH to Carma Broadcasting. Both deals are expected to close this third quarter and are pending FCC approval.

Fred Powers, 49, News Reporter at WGCL/Atlanta, the CBS affiliate owned by Meredith Broadcasting, died Monday after a long battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held today at 1p at Saint Mark’s United Methodist Church in Atlanta. 

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Joining the cast of Law & Order: SVU as the newest Assistant District Attorney is Michaela McManus, who most recently was seen on The CW’s One Tree Hill in a recurring role. 

Laurie Metcalf is cast in The CW’s new drama series Easy Money which will air on Sunday nights at 9p and is programmed for the network by MRC. The series is about a family of loan sharks dominated by the mother played by Laurie.

Also for The CW, Anne Archer will co-star in the drama series Privileged (formerly titled Surviving the Filthy Rich and How to Teach Filthy Rich Girls). Anne, who replaces Marsha Mason from the pilot episode, will play Laurel Limoges, a wealthy grandmother raising her twin granddaughters. The series is scheduled for the Tuesday 9p time slot this fall.

GSN has named hosts of its revivals of classic gamers The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game.  Signed on to host The Dating Game is actress Kim Coles, and comedian Judy Gold will take the emcee duties at The Newlywed Game, per THR.

Casting Call: NBC’s The Biggest Loser will host an 11-city search for contestants to appear on season seven. For this edition, producers want pairs from family members and spouses to dating couples, co-workers and best friends. All candidates must be at least 18 years old and legal U.S. citizens. The audition cities include: Louisville, Oklahoma City, New York City, Detroit, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Charlotte, Miami and Los Angeles. Those auditioning in person must bring a non-returnable photo of themselves and their partner. The show’s casting team guarantees the first 500 applicants in line will be seen in each casting city. CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Nokia offered to buy the 52% of mobile software firm Symbian it doesn’t already own for about $410 million. The company plans to create a consortium with Sony Ericsson, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo and others to release Symbian’s software to manufactures royalty-free in an attempt to simplify the fragmented mobile software marketplace for developers. Nokia is fighting for its life as Apple gears up for the subsidized launch of the 3G iPhone in more than 70 countries and Research in Motion works with manufactures on more refined BlackBerry devices. Symbian is one of the leading operating system creators for smartphones worldwide with about 60% of the installed market (most of it in Europe and Asia.)   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY: DreamWorks picks up the feature film rights to The 39 Clues, a multiplatform adventure series from Scholastic Media, per Variety.  Steven Spielberg, who might direct, is set to produce the movie with Scholastic Media President Debra Forte.  Targeted to Kids/tween 8-12 The 39 Clues, which launches September 9, encourages kids to read and solve the mystery of the central family in the property.  The 39 Clues includes a 10-book series by author Rick Riordan, which will be released over the course of the next two years, as well as an online game, trading cards. CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  BBC Worldwide is acquiring Australia’s subscription TV channel, UK.TV with the official takeover happening on July 1.  As one of three stakeholders in the company (formerly with a 20% share), BBC Worldwide’s Channels business has bought the remaining shares from joint partners FOXTEL and FremantleMedia to become UK.TV’s 100% owner. BBC Worldwide and FOXTEL also teamed up to launch 3 new channels in Australia from the new BBC-branded international portfolio. BBC HD launched earlier in June as the first on the new FOXTEL HD+ service. BBC Knowledge and CBeebies will be the first BBC channels to launch on FOXTEL in the middle of 2009. With its “bad boys” FOX led at 8p with two Cops episodes averaging a 1.6/6 and through 9p FOX stayed in the top spot with America’s Most Wanted at 1.8/7. CBS’ encore of 48 Hours Mystery won during 10p with 1.2/4.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

A&E Television Networks (AETN) advanced Robert DeBitetto to President/GM of A&E Network and Bio Channel. Robert will manage content across all platforms for A&E, Bio as well as Crime & Investigation Network and the brand extensions of each. In addition, Robert will supervise programming, strategic planning, acquisitions, consumer marketing, brand development, public relations and on-air promotions for the three networks, as well as overseeing the company’s feature documentary unit, A&E IndieFilms. Robert reports to Abbe Raven, President/CEO, A&E Television Networks.

Razor & Tie Entertainment upgraded Iris Pagan-Frank to Controller up from Assistant Controller. Based at the company’s headquarters in New York City, Iris reports to Angela Alvino, VP/Finance and Operations.

Peter Marks was appointed VP/Development with Chicago-based Towers Productions, Inc. Peter will manage the creative and business development functions as well as client relationships and the Development Department personnel. He will continue to report jointly to Jonathan Towers, Chairman/Executive Producer and William Fisher, CEO.

Robin Thomas was added as SVP/Strategic Research with Disney-ABC Domestic Television (DADT). Robin will head all market and program research for DADT involving first-run and off-net programming, cable and new media. Based at the company’s Burbank headquarters, Robin will report to Janice Marinelli, President, DADT.

Relativity Media tapped Tom Forman as CEO for Relativity Real, a new reality and alternative television production, sales and distribution unit. Tom will manage the daily operations and also be Executive Producer on many Relativity Real projects. Tom, who led Tom Forman Productions, brought over his staff that includes Jonathan Karsh as SVP/Creative Affairs, Brad Bishop as EVP/Production and Julie Link as VP/Development.
