Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 22, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
VerveLife ( www.vervelife.com ), a tech-driven music marketing company, launches kid and tween targeted promotional music stores, RhymbaKid and RhymbaTween. Designed to provide comfort to parents who are concerned with what their kids are listening to, and designed to be COPPA compliant, the stores sites allow marketers to offer age-appropriate music downloading and streaming and reward kids/tweens for their purchases. RhymbaKid is offering 5,000+ pre-licensed current and classic tracks from name artists, all screened for language and subject matter deemed appropriate for kids 9 and younger. Similarly RhymbaTween features songs that parents are okay with and yet still cool to tweens and not babyish. Brands and advertisers can customize interfaces to maintain consistency, or insert messaging between music tracks to increase brand interaction. The music on both sites will be updated weekly.
Disney Channel will premiere its new reality series, PrankStars, on Friday, July 15 at 8p. Hosted by Mitchel Musso (Pair of Kings, Phineas and Ferb), the debut episode of the series features appearances by Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place, Princess Protection Program, Ramona and Beezus) and Debby Ryan (The Suite Life on Deck, 16 Wishes). Musso also co-wrote and performs the show’s theme song. A production of Zoo Productions, PrankStars is executive produced by Barry Poznick (Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?), Charles Steenveld (Family Game Night) and rick de Oliveira (All-Star Celebrity Treasure Hunt).
The special I Can Be President: A Kid’s-Eye View explores what kids think it would be like to grow up and be the president of the United States. Presented by HBO Family, the half-hour special premieres tonight on HBO at 7:30p. Following its debut, I Can Be President: A Kid’s-Eye View will then have multiple plays on HBO Family, beginning June 25. The special features the hopes and dreams of elementary school kids in animated segments. I Can Be President: A Kid’s-Eye View is produced by director/producer Diane Kolyer (A Letter to Elia, The Music in Me, Happy to Be Nappy and Other Stories of Me, among others) with animated segments directed by director/producer/animator Michael Sporn (Doctor DeSoto) and executive produced by Sheila Nevins.
Kindle Entertainment has begun production in Northern Ireland on season three of the preschool series Big and Small for CBeebies. Co-produced with Sixteen South, with funding from Northern Ireland Screen, the new season is comprised of 26×11 episodes (for a total of 78×11). The live show Big and Small: Happy Together will set out on tour in Canada this August 2011.
Pukeko Pictures is on the verge of completing production on a second season of the kid-aimed animated series the WotWots at Richard Taylor’s Weta Workshop. The second season of the WotWots (52×11) will broadcast on The Hub in the US. The series can be seen in 89 territories including Australia, Canada, Korea, Middle East and Poland. Additionally, HBO Family Latin America recently acquired the pay-TV and VOD rights for the WotWots was.
American Greetings Properties (AGP) enters into a broadcast deal for in New Zealand with TVWork‘s channel Four for its properties Strawberry Shortcake, Care, Bears and Twisted Whiskers. Under the deal Four picks up right to air: season one of the Strawberry Shortcake series Berry Bitty Adventures and the CGI movie Sky’s the Limit; The Cares Bears Adventures in Care a Lot and four CGI specials The Giving Festival, Care Bears: Share Bear Shines, Care Bears to the Rescue and Care Bears: Oopsy Does It!; and all episodes of the Twisted Whiskers series.
Spain-based BRB Internacional completes program sales across Eastern Europe. Megamax (Hungary), Chellomedia’s new youth-targeted channel that launched April 2011, acquires Iron Kid (26×30) and The Invisible Man (26×30). Pubcaster RTV (Slovenia) has picked up the guessing-game show Zoobabu (104×2), while open-programming channel Tring (Albania) takes Kambu (52×7). Canal+ (Poland) is now airing The Imp (65×90), while Muz TV (Russia) airs Angus&Cheryl (104×2). Additionally, Silk TV (Kazakhstan) acquires Bernard (156×3), which already airs on 2×2 Channel (Russia) and on HBO across Eastern Europe.
Baby Genius releases its first two education-centric interactive 3D animated mobile apps, MYPAL Tempo and MYPAL Frankie, initially for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and will soon be available for other mobile and tablet devices. The apps, both created and produced by LeftRight, feature Baby Genius characters and speech detection technology that repeat a kid’s words in the character’s voice, and also allow video recording and video sharing via online social networks and email. The musical mini games feature different screen filters, such as normal, sepia, black and white, and fish eye in color.

Zodiak Kids teams with the National Trust for the Waybuloo ‘Pipling’ Summer Tour in the UK. Based on the popular CBeebies preschool Waybuloo series, the new tour launches July 21 and will run through September 20, 2011. Entertainment One sets a schedule of live appearances across the UK for Peppa Pig this summer with visits planned popular family friendly festivals including LolliBop, Skyfest and Camp Bestival. Peppa Pig’s summer schedule begins with appearances at Skyfest’s London and Edinburgh locations between July 15-16 and August 6-7.

EXECUTIVE MOVES
Diana Rhoten, Ph.D. is named SVP/Strategy of News Corporation’s Education Division. Based in NYC, Rhoten will report to Joel Klein, CEO, News Corporation’s Education Division. Rhoten will be key in evaluating potential partnerships and help grow the division through appropriate and targeted investments. Rhoten is the co-founder of Startle, which designs products for and accelerates startups in education technology and digital learning market. She also founded the New Youth City Learning Network in NYC, and founded and directed the Knowledge Institutions and Digital Media and Learning programs at the Social Science Research Council and was a program director in the Office of Cyberinfrastructure at the National Science Foundation. News Corporation’s Education Division focuses on individualized, technology-based content and learning opportunities that support student and teacher performance, as well as digital assessment tools for K-12 students in the US that help eliminate the achievement gap.
Paul Crichton has been promoted to VP/Director of Publicity, Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division. Crichton, who joined the company as Director of Publicity in March 2006, has developed publicity campaigns for books by the Duchess of York, Lynne Cheney, Nic Sheff and the publisher’s own picture books on Barack Obama and John McCain for the 2008 presidential campaigns. Crichton is also active in the kid’s publishing arena, serving on special committees including the Banned Book Week Committee for the Free Expression Advocacy Board tot eh Get Caught Reading Committee for the Association of American Publishers, as well as representing Simon & Schuster on boards including First Book and as Co-Chair of the CBC Children’s Book Week.
NYC-based Insight Research Group grows with the addition and promotion of new senior managers and managers. Insight specializes in research across business categories including kids (via Insight Kids), media, travel & leisure, fashion & retail, consumer products and electronics, and education/social cause.
- Joining Insight are Cassandra Rowe as Senior Research Manager and Ally Aleman as Research Manager. With a background in both qualitative and quantitative research, Rowe most recently worked for Disney Channels Worldwide, and previously toiled for Lieberman Research Worldwide. Aleman comes to the company from MSL Group, where she was a research supervisor.
