6/20/07

Good morning, it’s Wednesday, June 20, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.  A slightly abbreviated edition this morning … there’s a granddaughter looking to be born sometime today and I’m on my way out the door to be there for her big debut … more on this tomorrow!

In other news …

After what was pretty much considered a huge long audition, the Florida judge in the Anna Nicole Smith case is in talks to develop a daytime court series with CBS Television Distribution, according to a story in today’s Broadcasting & Cable. Judge Larry Seidlin is expected to tape a pilot in early July.  The Judge has also resigned his seat on the Florida Circuit Family Court bench, which is effective at the end of July.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Cable Upfront Update: Discovery Communications has closed its first upfront deal with Starcom USA across all 11 of its networks, including Travel Channel and BBC America. Incidentally, this agreement was brokered using exact minute ratings from Nielsen All Minute data rather than Average Commercial Minute data. Components of the deal also include digital media and cross-platform sponsorship opportunities.

ABC News and WOI/Des Moines, the ABC affiliate, will have a full house of all Republican and Democrat presidential candidates present for the two live debates happening in August. Each 90-minute debate will be located at Drake University and moderated by George Stephanopoulos with added questions from David Yepsen of The Des Moines Register. The Republican debate is Sunday, August 5 and the Democratic debate is Sunday, August 19, with both airing nationally as a special broadcast of This Week with George Stephanopoulos.

TNT’s third season opener of The Closer Monday night (9p) drew in 2.9 million A18-49 viewers and 8.8 million total viewers. With that big of a lead-in, TNT’s new original series premiere of Heartland the same night (10p) had 1.2 million A18-49 viewers and 4.3 million total viewers.

Adult Swim’s debut of the half-hour Robot Chicken Star Wars over four telecasts Sunday night (10p, 11p, 12a and 1a) drew in 711,000 A18-34 viewers and 426,000 A18-24 viewers. The special also scored 481,000 M18-34 viewers and 299,000 M18-24 viewers.

Golf Channel’s upcoming new original series Fore Inventors Only, which will premiere July 10 at 10p, has three top-flight golf judges lined up to assess more than a hundred golf inventions, eventually narrowing them down to five finalists. The judges are: Fulton Allem, PGA TOUR pro who hails from South Africa; Bill Harmon, Golf Digest top-50 instructor; and Stina Sternberg, Golf for Women senior editor. Viewers will have a say which of the five inventions will ultimately win and the announcement will occur during the show’s live finale on September 4.

BET will debut a new late night M-F series on July 9 at 11p called Take the Cake, from Endemol USA.  The show combines talk and game show, and with an interactive component, also draws in the home viewer to play along via the internet or text messaging. The show will be hosted by Toccara and Joe Clair, both familiar to BET viewers.

SCI FI Channel is giving its viewers more of Who Wants to be a Superhero? as the reality competition series returns for a second season beginning July 26 at 9p and expands by two additional episodes to eight in total. This season’s 10 contestants will vie to have their alter-ego immortalized in a new comic book from Dark Horse Comics created by Stan Lee as well as an action figure designed by Shocker Toys. The series is produced by Nash Entertainment and POW! Entertainment Inc.

According to her own blog, Rosie O’Donnell is scheduled to meet this week with the folks at CBS’ daytime gamer The Price is Right, and discuss her potentially taking over for Bob Barker.  At the Daytime Emmys the other night, Barker suggested Rosie would be a good replacement for him, and apparently she agrees.  Other potential replacement candidates include George Hamilton, John O’Hurley and ET’s Mark Steines.
