Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 20, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.
Disney Channel has picked up a second season of its new preschool series My Friends Tigger & Pooh. The series debuted this May 2007 and airs during the weekend version of the Playhouse Disney programming block and is slated to premiere this July 2007 in the Middle East, Latin America, Australia and portions of Asia, and in August in India, Portugal, Spain and Taiwan. It is also currently airing in Germany, Italy and the UK.
Decode Entertainment has received an order for a second season of its live-action comedy, The Latest Buzz, from Canada’s The Family Channel. The new season of the tween aimed series will include 26 x 22′ new episodes.
The stop-motion animated series Hana’s Helpline (26×10′) has been picked up by France 5, which plans to debut the show in fall 2007. Created by the Welsh animation studio Calon, Hana’s Helpline debuted on S4C in April, and most recently premiered in the UK on Five’s Milkshake programming block. S4C and Five have ordered a second season for the series. The series revolves around Hana, a duck, who runs a helpline service where she solves problems presented by various animal characters.
4Kids Entertainment says it will delay the launch of the Chaotic Trading Card Game and corresponding website, which was to bow June 27, until later this summer. 4Kids says the move will provide 4Kids and its subsidiary Chaotic USA Entertainment and TC Digital Games with the opportunity to continue the closed beta testing on the site. Previously the Chaotic Trading Card Game and website had been slated to launch in May 2007. The Chaotic animated series continues to air Saturday mornings as part of the 4KidsTV block on Fox. The Chaotic game is designed to be used interactively across the web and mobile units, which will allow each player to use the unique number printed on each of the cards to upload their cards onto the Chaotic site and play online in real time with other players.
MARKETING/LICENSING
DreamWorks Animation SKG has named Mattel, Inc. as the global master toy licensee for its CG animated feature film Kung Fu Panda, which is slated for release in June 6, 2008. Mattel plans to create loads of different products across a range of categories including action figures, plush and role-play.
In other DreamWorks news … Shrek will makes his way down the streets of NYC this November, as a giant balloon in the 81st Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Shrek will also serve as Macy’s Official Holiday Ambassador this year, which includes an exclusive plush Shrek doll donning a red vest and programmed with three phrases that will be available at Macy’s stores from November 1, and comes with Donkey and Puss In Boots plush finger puppets. Additionally, the release of Shrek the Third on DVD will coincide with the parade.
Walden Media has named 20th Century Fox Licensing & Merchandising as worldwide licensing agent for its future film projects for Walden and its sister company Bristol Bay Productions. Under the pact, Fox licensing will develop licensed products and retail programs for movies produced by Walden Media including the upcoming youth-targeted pictures The Dark is Rising, Nim’s Island, City Ember, and The Tortoise & The Hippo, all of which will be distributed by Fox and marketed by Fox-Walden. Those Walden Media movies that are with other studios (e.g. Chronicles of Narnia movies at Disney) are not affected by this deal.
Hasbro and Lucasfilm’s Lucas Licensing have agreed in principle that Hasbro will serve as the master toy and game licensee for the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones movie. Hasbro plans to develop a broad line of action figures, vehicles, role play toys and games that will debut in spring 2008, just before the movie’s release on May 22.
Chorion has awarded Fisher-Price the master toy license for its new TV series, The Mr. Men Show. The new agreement initially covers the UK, US and French territories. Slated to premiere in 2008, the series is based on the Mr. Men and Little Miss book series by Roger Hargreaves and will air on Cartoon Network US (early 2008) and in the UK on Five’s Milkshake morning kid’s block. The products based on the series will be available in the UK in fall 2008, followed elsewhere from 2009.
Charlie and Lola, from the animated preschool series and the books of the same name, are packing their bags to set out on a ten-city US mall tour at the end of this month. The tour will get underway in NYC with an event at the Manhattan Mall on Saturday, June 30, and will then make its way around the country with stops in Houston, Dallas, Boston, LA, San Francisco, Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago and Minneapolis. Each stop on the tour will feature three performances as well as hands-on activities for kids among other things. The Wildflower Group is the North American licensing agency for Charlie and Lola.
VIZ Media, LLC has named Bandai America as the toy licensee for products based on Blue Dragon, the upcoming anime series that is based on the Xbox 360 role playing game. Earlier this year, TV TOKYO Corporation and Shueisha Inc. tapped VIZ Media as the master licensor for the TV, home video and non-video game merchandising rights for the property for the Americas, Europe and Oceania. The Blue Dragon game will be released in North America and Europe in August 2007, and the TV series premiered in Japan on TV Tokyo in April 2007.
Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) is expanding merchandising programs for several Nickelodeon properties. In addition, NVCP is seeking other licensing partners a various categories for these properties:
- New products based on The Naked Brothers Band will launch in late 2007, followed in spring 2008 mass market launch, from licensees such as: Memcorp (electronics); Scholastic (book publishing/fall 2007); Jerry Leigh (apparel); and Nick Records and Sony BMG will release the group’s first CD in fall 2007. NVCP is looking for partners to develop retro inspired/rock-based products in a range of categories.
- The Wonder Pets! Fisher-Price, the master toy licensee for the Nick Jr. property, will debut a toy line based on the series at mass market retail in fall 2008. Other deals include: Ty, Inc. (Beanie Babies/fall 2008); Random House and Simon & Schuster (books/spring 2008).
- Neopets tween-centric products will bow in fall 2008 at mass retail.
- NVCP has also inked a number of new domestic licensee deals: Rubies Costumes – pet costumes/accessories featuring characters from various shows; Skechers will create footwear inspired by Dora the Explorer; Take Two is creating handheld and console video games based on Nick Jr. properties; and Sport Obemeyer will launch branded ski outerwear for Dora and SpongeBob for fall 2007.
Corgi International Ltd. has completed four new licensing deals including:
- A master toy/collectible license deal with Nintendo of America Inc. for a multi-category range of products for 2008
- A pact with Apple Corps for Beatles and Yellow Submarine die cast collectibles at difference scales set to debut in 2008
- A new partnership with Microsoft will see the launch of 3D products based on Microsoft’s Halo franchise, in conjunction with the release of Halo 3 in fall 2007.
- A master license for a line of toys/collectibles based on Exodus’ CG-animated feature film Igor (2008).
Mattel extends licensing pacts for two girls brands.
- Mattel expands its relationship with Hanes to include the Polly Pocket brand. Hanes will produce a Polly Pocket collection of underwear in toddler and girl sizes, which will be available starting in September 2007 at Mervyns stores nationwide. Hanes already produces underwear lines based on Mattel’s Barbie and Hot Wheels brands.
- Mattel has extended its long-term licensing deal with the Brown Shoe Co.’s Buster Brown & Co. for Barbie footwear. Brown Shoe has offered toddler and young girls Barbie inspired footwear for the last 20 years.
EXECUTIVE MOVES
Jack Lawrence will join Corgi International Ltd. next month as COO, CFO and Group Managing Director, North American operations. Lawrence will replace Jennifer Klatt, the current CFO who is resigning to pursue other interests. Most recently, Lawrence served as CFO and head of Operations, Cranium, Inc. Previously he was COO and CFO with several companies including AT&T Multi-Media, Chambers Communications and Dotcast Inc. Corgi recently named Denis Horton as Managing Director of its operation in Europe. Horton had been Managing Director/Europe, Radica, Inc.
RATINGS
Nickelodeon’s virtual kids community Nicktropolis has signed nearly 4 million registered users since launching in late January, providing kids with a safe haven in which to create virtual rooms, play games and watch Nick videos. This month Nicktropolis will launch two new themed zones: Space Center and an area based on the Naked Brothers Band.
