Good morning, it’s Wednesday, June 1, 2011, and this is your first early morning digital briefing. If you would like to read this or any other Cynopsis edition online, click here.
Confirming numerous speculative reports, Apple issued a statement on Tuesday outlining what developers can expect from next week’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco. Yes, Steve Jobs (despite his medical leave) will unveil the upcoming “cloud services offering” iCloud. The company has nailed down deals with all 4 major record labels, according to a WSJ report, a feat not yet accomplished by rivals Google and Apple. Apple will also show off iOS 5, its new mobile operating system, and Lion, its new desktop OS. A new iPhone was not mentioned in the release.
Shopping channel HSN is getting ready to launch a casual gaming and digital commerce portal on HSN.com – HSN Arcade – that will allow users to play games online while simultaneously watching HSN streaming live in HD. The gaming hub will integrate with Facebook to allow players to share their scores and achievements. Games will be tied to HSN’s popular “Today’s Special” with tournaments, prize giveaways and a daily timed feature called “Today’s Special Jigsaw Puzzle.” Other free-to-play games include Crossword Puzzles, Word Search, Mahjongg, Sudoku, Treasure Hunt and Blackjack.
Miss any of last season’s of Breaking Bad? AMC is generously offering up the whole season on demand to prepare viewers for season 4 from June 20 through July 17, the day the new season premiers. AMCTV.com is also publishing a slew of digital extras including “Inside Breaking Bad” videos for each episode, behind-the-scenes clips throughout the season and videos of the season’s most “Talked About Scenes.” The site will also feature a new iteration of its interactive graphic novel, starring Aaron Paul’s character Jesse Pinkman, and an interactive case file – with photos, text and video.
In addition to being broadcast on Reelzchannel, the inaugural Critics’ Choice Television Awards will be streamed live on VH1.com on June 20, with select footage made available for on-demand viewing after the event. VH1.com will also offer celebrity interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and an opportunity for fans to interact with celebrities backstage with he “fan-cam” stream.
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~
Indie film distributor SnagFilms is reaching out to OTT users with a new channel available on Roku set-top boxes. The service will offer transactional on demand access to films such as “Buena Vista Social Club,” “Waiting to Inhale” and “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” SnagFilm also offers selected titles via paid VOD with Comcast, FiOS, iTunes and Amazon and streams movies via Hulu, the Starbucks Digital Network, AOL and Boxee.
Twitter has hired away the team of engineers that founded the internet advertising start-up AdGrok, an analytics platform that simplifies and automates the process of placing orders on Google’s Adwords. The company is no longer accepting new customers, will cease charging existing users immediately and will shut down its servers on June 30.
Meanwhile TVGuide.com is making it easy to follow your favorite celebs, athletes and TV stars on Twitter by providing a single-click option to follow a given star. The follow button will be available for 150 TV shows, 130 celebrities and for all 122 team pages for Major League Baseball, the National Football League, the National Basketball Association and the National Hockey League.
News Corp., part owner of the video streaming service, is currently in talks with Hulu to increase the commercial load in a portion of Fox programs that run on the site, reports AdAge. Fox would like to sell more advertisers on the ability to reach consumer across multiple platforms. If consumer experience-focused Hulu were to agree the move would represent a shift for the broadband service, which has touted its lighter load as one of its main selling points to consumers. Rival TV Everywhere services, for instance, carry a TV-like ad load and disable fast forwarding.
Claiming to have made “considerable security enhancements,” Sony announced that it is flipping the switch back on for its PlayStation Network and Qriocity music service for PlayStation3, PlayStation Portable and PCs by the end of the week in the Americas, Europe and most of Asia. (Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong are the only exceptions.) Despite recent troubles (3 straight years of losses), Sony leads all companies in Japan with a cash horde of $2.4 trillion in currency and deposits, according to Bloomberg, suggesting that some acquisitions may be in the works.
News Corp. collected the last bids for its troubled MySpace social networking unit yesterday as the deadline for bidders on the service came and went. MySpace CEO Michael Jones and private equity firms including Criterion Capital Partners, which bought Bebo from AOL for a pittance, are among the suitors, according to an AllThingsD report.
CDN Akamai and webcast management firm AEG Digital Media experienced a busy month in April, delivering nearly 170 million streams and more than 2,400 terabytes of data across the Akamai HD Network. Managed events included the Grammy Live webcast (3.8 million users), the Coachella Music and Arts Festival (4 million fans) and William and Kate’s live-streamed nuptials.
The prestigious International Agency for Research on Cancer has weighed in on the cell phones-cause-cancer debate by listing handsets as a possible cancer-inducing agent. However the agency, an arm of the World Health Organization, did acknowledge that more data must be collected for a definitive judgment to be made. “Given the potential consequences for public health of this classification and findings, it is important that additional research be conducted into the long-term, heavy use of mobile phones,” said Christopher Wild, IARC Director, in a statement.
Nearly a quarter of American internet uses (24%) have now placed Voice-over-IP calls using Skype, Vonage or other services according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project. That’s quite a jump from just 4 years ago, when only 8% of internet users and 6% of all adults had tried the technology. On any given day 5% of internet users are going online to place phone calls. Not surprisingly, users 18-29 years of age led all age groups who had made calls online at 27%. Households earning $75k+ were most likely to try the service (36%.)
Smithsonian Channel has updated its iPhone app, expanding its video capability to include some full episodes and introducing a new trivia featured dubbed “artifacts.” User can test their knowledge by answering trivia questions related to a number of topics including history, science and music. New questions will be added each week.
Current TV has hired a team of producers to help run its soon-to-premiere Keith Olbermann news show, including MSNBC veteran David Sarosi as Executive Producer; Christopher Ballante as “Countdown” Director; Joel Schwartzberg as Digital Executive Producer; Katy Ramirez Karp as Senior Booking Producer and Joe Lapointe as Segment Producer.
NBCUniversal has upped Scott Schiller to the newly created position of EVP/Digital Media Sales for the NBCUniversal Entertainment & Digital Networks and Integrated Media (E&DN/IM) division, overseeing ad sales for Fandango, iVillage, DailyCandy, Swirl and Television Without Pity. Scott will report to Dave Cassaro, NBCUniversal’s President of Cable Entertainment & Digital Advertising Sales, and Nick Lehman, President of Digital for E&DN/IM.
Kantar Media’s Burlington, MA-based Cymfony has named Andrew Mullen to the post of VP/Sales. He will be responsible for direct sales, new business development, channel partnerships and complementary offers in conjunction with a wide network of Kantar companies.
Members-only online shopping club JackThreads, a division of Thrillist, tapped Evan Josloff as the company’s new Divisional Merchandise Manager. Based in the New York office, Evan will be responsible for the development and management of merchandise divisions across the organization.

A new start-up launched by former Miami University student Rob Matthews is out to spur the growth of a micro economy built upon an iPhone app. Air Run, available here on iTunes, is a localized GPS-powered job hub set up to help find folks to do odd jobs for you. “Seekers” post want ads on the app specifying what the job is and what they’re willing to pay for it and “Runners” can pull up a map view of jobs available in their area. The app will even facilitate payment of the transaction using a credit card or PayPal. The founders envision the service as a boon for busy people looking to find reliable help with annoying but time-consuming chores; recent marketplace postings including “Get in line for me at the DMV” and “Change grandma’s diaper” (I’m not making this up.) AirRun does not currently take a cut of transactions booked from the app as they focus on establishing an active userbase.
