Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 18, 2008, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Looking to reach kids where they are, Nickelodeon Kids and Family Group establishes two new game units, Games Group and Virtual Worlds Group, which will be led respectively by two newly named SVP and GM’s Dave Williams, who will be based in San Francisco, and Kyra Reppen, who is based in LA.  Both will report to Steve Youngwood, EVP/Digital Media. 

  • The Games Group will encompass all paid and subscription gaming initiatives across various platforms (e.g. online and CD-ROM games, handheld and console games), and will include the Nick’s casual games sites Shockwave and AddictingGames.  It will focus on the creation of family-targeted games, based on both existing as well as new properties.  Williams is charged with expanding the subscription game services, licensing and self-publishing businesses.  He will also grow the educational gaming site myNOGGIN and Shockwave, as well as developing new services and signing new partnerships with game developers and publishers.  Williams will also continue to manage Shockwave and AddictingGames.
  • Reppen, who will continue to manage Neopets, will manage the Virtual Worlds Group’s strategies, creative and management for all of Nick’s virtual world efforts for kids, tweens, teens and families, including Neopets, Nicktropolis with the Nick.com team, and casual massive multiplayer online games (MMOG), as well as new virtual worlds.  The group will focus on the existing projects like World of Neopia (working title) and of the expansion of Nicktropolis with a premium layer.  It will also develop original properties like the recently announced Monkey World. She will also be responsible for expanding Nicktropolis as it adds new environments to the site in the US and launch a localized site in the UK. 

MORE KIDS STUFF

Fox announces Miley Cyrus will host of the 10th Annual Teen Choice 2008 awards show, which airs Monday, August 4, 8-10p on Fox, when they will name Tween/Teen favorites in movie, TV, music, comedy, sports and fashion.  Additionally, Fox unveiled the nominees for Teen Choice 2008, with Gossip Girl leading the pack with 14 nods, and Chris Brown with nine nominations, Cyrus getting four nominations, and Justin Timberlake receiving three.  Tweens/Teens 13-19 are invited to vote once a day online ( www.teenchoiceawards.com) for their favorite nominee.  There are lots of categories within categories, like the movie section includes multiple categories for Action/Adventure, Drama, Comedy, Chick Flick, and Bromantic Comedy, far too many different ones to mention here  so check it out online.

Nickelodeon will launch as a 24/7 channel on African pay-TV operator’s MultiChoice Africa on July 1, under a new multi-year distribution pact with MTV Networks International.  Nickelodeon debuts as an English-language channel on satcaster MultiChoice’s DStv service, available to 1.5+ million subscribers in Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Disney Channel Games, a series of 5×30 specials featuring the network’s stars will air each week for five weeks, beginning Sunday, July 27 at 8p on Disney Channel.  Hosted by Brian Stepanek (The Suite Life of Zack & Cody), the games feature celebrities in a range of races and obstacle courses and post-event concerts including performances by Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, and Demi Lovato etc. The event, filmed at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, benefits four children’s charities: Make-A-Wish Foundation, Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation, UNICEF and Boys & Girls Club of America.  The specials will then air on Disney Channels worldwide, featuring local Disney Channel stars as the host of the specials.

Nickelodeon celebrates military families July 4th weekend with the debut of the Nick News with Linda Ellerbee special episode, Coming Home: When Parents Return from War, Sunday, July 6 at 9p.  The episode features kids whose parents have been deployed and discuss what life might be like when the return, will kids expectations meet with the reality of a mom and/or dad’s return home.  Additionally, the show also features kids who have lost a parent in war.

Razor & Tie Entertainment will release the original motion picture soundtrack for Warner Premiere’s Another Cinderella Story on August 26, 2008.  The album features new songs performed by teen stars including the stars of Another Cinderella Story, Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place) and Drew Seeley (he co-wrote Get’cha Head in the Game, and starred in the High School Musical concert tour), who are the stars of the movie.  A modern twist on the Cinderella story set in Beverly Hills, Another Cinderella Story will be released on DVD and VOD, September 16th by Warner Home Video, with plans to debut the movie on ABC Family set for late 2008.

The cat is back … the lasagna-loving cat that is.  Fox Home Entertainment will release Garfield’s Fun Fest, a new full-length CG animated feature film, on DVD this August 5.  Presented by Paws, Incorporated and in association with The Animation Picture Company/Davis Entertainment, Garfield’s Fun Fest was written and executive produced by Garfield creator Jim Davis.  The Paws, Inc. Production in association with Wonderworld Studios features all the property’s favorite characters as Garfield looks to win the town annual talent show again. The release also includes an exclusive comic booklet by Davis, DVD-Rom games and other extras.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cartoon Network Enterprises stirs up three tasty new licensing deals in the food and beverage categories in the UK for Ben 10 animated series. The new Ben 10 licensees are Kinnerton Confectionery, Lightbody Cakes and Corinthian Marketing.

Lisa Marks & Associates, Inc. expands the licensing efforts for Manhattan Toy’s Groovy Girls as it develops a lifestyle program for the brand.  LMA extends Groovy Girls into various categories, including apparel and accessories, cosmetics, bedding and room decor, publishing, stationery and party goods, packaged goods, with additional plans to move into the multi-platform entertainment area.

RATINGS

Nickelodeon’s premiere of the special iCarly Saves TV, last Friday, June 13 at 8p, averaged 4.5 million total viewers (up by +54% versus the time period last year) making it the top non-sports program of the week on basic cable TV.  Similarly, the network reports the special was number one among several kids and tweens for the week, including with Tweens 9-14 1.9 million (+138%), with K6-11 1.9 million (+69%), and with K2-11 2.3 million (+39%).
