CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

06/16/04

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 16, 2004, and now on with your first early morning briefing.

Nielsen Media Research‘s Jack Loftus has issued a statement saying that the flaws discovered in the LPM system in New York by Ernst & Young (as reported by the LA Times), which then led to the Media Ratings Council’s decision not to provide accreditation to the system, are in the process of being corrected.  Those flaws are reporting errors (mid-identifying the ethnicity of the household) and what they call fault rates, that is the equipment failing to record properly the viewed programs, or failing to properly transmit that information to Nielsen.  Incidence of fault rates were found to be 25% higher in African American homes.  According to Loftus, the fault rates are a result of larger families with a larger than average number of television sets, often found in African American or Hispanic homes.  He said, “The more television sets in the home, the more metering equipment, the more opportunity for something to go wrong, and that’s just a fact of life.”  He also said those fault rates have since returned to “acceptable levels”  and the reporting errors discovered by Ernst & Young have since been corrected.

According to Broadcasting & Cable, the next group to ask Nielsen to correct the problems raised by the MRC in a letter reportedly being prepared, is the American Association of Advertising Agencies (AAAA).  The letter won’t ask Nielsen to delay the use of LPMs (they began in use last June 3), but wants to see the MRC affix its accreditation seal of approval. A similar letter has been issued by the Cable Television Advertising Bureau.  Given the above statement, that letter from the Four A’s may now be moot.

This took no time at all … David Janollari has been named President of Entertainment for The WB Network, responsible for Primetime Program Development including Series, Movies and Specials; Primetime Current Programming and Scheduling as well as Kids WB! Programming.  The announcement was made by Garth Ancier.  David joins The WB from The Greenblatt Janollari Studio which he co-founded with producing partner Bob Greenblatt.  The Greenblatt Janollari Studio presently has four primetime series on the air including the critically acclaimed Six Feet Under for HBO, Eve and One on One for UPN and American Family for PBS.

Beginning July 7, TBS will add the animated off-net series Family Guy to its primetime lineup, airing back to back eps from 8-9pm (as it continues to air on Cartoon Network).  At 9pm will be back to back Seinfeld eps followed by S#x and the City. Family Guy is also slated to return to Fox primetime schedule with new episodes in mid-season 2004-05.

CBS and New Line have team up for six episodes of a new reality show based in part on the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.  According to Variety, Nightmare on Elm Street: Real Nightmares, hosted by Robert Englund (Freddy), invites viewers to look at their fears dead on by virtue of fx artist Peter Kuran’s recreations, and then step into those recreations by submitting to a challenge or a stunt. The challenge will be shot like a movie scene, so TV viewers won’t see the backstage portion of the special effects, rather just see the person living through their own nightmares.

Tonight’s Premieres:
FOX:  Simple Life 2 at 8p and at 9p; Quintuplets at 830p; Method & Red at 930p
Univision:  Amarte es mi Pecado at 9pm

According to Hollywood Reporter, Michael Bolton may be making his way into daytime syndication fare in time for Fall 2005. His manager has spilled the singer has been meeting with syndication executives this week.

Meredith Broadcasting has added to its lineup of stations with the addition of Chattanooga’s WB Affiliate, WFLI.  Owned by Lambert Television Group, the sale to Meredith is expected to be finalized by 4th qtr.
