Cynopsis: Kids!
06/15/11

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, June 15, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Ben 10 is coming to the big screen.  Cartoon Network and producer Joel Silver (Die Hard movies, The Matrix trilogy, Sherlock Holmes, and the upcoming Project X and Logan’s Run) and Silver Pictures ink a deal to develop a live-action feature film based on the network’s animated action/adventure property, Ben 10.  Under the agreement Silver and his production company are granted the exclusive rights to develop and package the property and advance it towards a theatrical production.  The Ben 10 movie will be produced by Silver, along with Dark Castle Entertainment Steve Richards and Andrew Rona.  Created by Man of Action‘s Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau and Steve Seagle, Ben 10 made launched on Cartoon Network in January 2006, and now airs around the world along with subsequent series Ben 10: Alien Force and Ben 10: Ultimate Alien, TV movies, and has also spawned a number of video games and merchandise line.

Saban Brands has begun pre-production on a primetime, family-friendly comedy Christmas special featuring Julius the monkey and other characters from the Paul Frank brand.  The special is slated to premiere in December 2012.  Producing the special are Mike Reiss (producer/The Simpsons, writer/Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and Ice Age: Continental Drift), as well as Erik Wiese (writer/director SpongeBob SquarePants) and Cynthia True (Wiese and True are creators/executive producers of The Mighty B!).  Saban Brands plans to produce more holiday specials for 2013, including Easter and Halloween.  Saban Brands also announced this week the new Paul Frank Academy of Awesome Mobile Tour 2011 ( www.academyofawesometour.com), an interactive tour featuring a newly designed Winnebago that will make 50 stops across the US, kicking off June 25, as well as the launch of Paul Frank’s Magic Balloon mobile app, a vertical scroller game for iOS.

Cabbage Patch Kids head back to TV in a new animated special.  Film/TV producer Galen Walker (producer of the animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie and Paramount’s upcoming live action TMNT movie) and CWA Carlin West Agency acquire the rights to produce a new animated special based on Cabbage Patch Kids from property owner Original Appalachian Artworks (OAA).  Carlin West was previously toiled for 15 years for 4Kids Entertainment.  Xavier Roberts created Cabbage Patch Kids in 1978 and later founded OAA, which now owns the brand.  Cabbage Patch Kids were featured in the animated The Cabbage Patch Christmas Special, which debuted in 1985 on ABC.  There were also a number of Cabbage Patch Kids products including video games, related doll lines (e.g. for the Olympics, Cabbage Patch Fairies), and licensed products.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings) will voice Raphael in Nickelodeon‘s new CG animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is slated to premiere on the network in fall 2012.  Astin joins the voice cast that already includes Jason Biggs (American Pie) as Leonardo, Greg Cipes (Teen Titans) as Michelangelo and Rob Paulsen (Planet Sheen) as Donatello.  Paulson lent his voice to Raphael in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987-1996) series.  Currently in production at the Nick Animation Studio in Burbank, California, the new series is executive produced by Ciro Nieli, Joshua Sternin and J.R. Ventimilia.  Nickelodeon Consumer Products continues to work with its original and long-time property toy partner, Playmates Toys, which is developing a product line based on the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.
