Cynopsis

07/09/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Not surprisingly, the American Federation of Television & Radio Artists (AFTRA) voted in favor of ratifying the primetime agreement, effectively quashing SAG’s efforts to have the contract voted down. The terms in the AFTRA deal, passed by 62% of voting members, echo those signed previously by the WGA and DGA. SAG’s interest in seeing this deal crash and burn was to give it more leverage in its deal with producers, while arguing actors should get better terms in the areas of new media, DVD residuals and salary minimums. AFTRA contends that approving the contract keeps people employed, and it offers increases in salaries and new media without rollbacks or concessions. Also yesterday, SAG agreed to meet with leaders of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) tomorrow afternoon to discuss the last and apparently final offer presented to the union more than a week ago.

Tonight’s Premieres:
SCI FI Channel: Ghost Hunters International at 9p; Scare Tactics at 10p

Tonight’s Finales:
MTV: The Real World at 10p
TV Land: She’s Got the Look at 10p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

In addition to his current duties as managing editor for the Discovery Channel, Ted Koppel will be a contributing analyst for BBC World News America which airs on BBC America weeknights at 7p and on the worldwide 24-hour BBC World News channel. Ted will provide analysis on national and international topics as well as be involved in the network’s U.S. presidential election reporting including live coverage of both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions this summer.

NBC Universal announced it will offer more than 3,600 hours of coverage from the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics which includes spotlighting all 34 Olympic sports in some fashion. Approximately 2,900 of those hours will be presented live and coverage of the Olympic Games will be distributed over the company’s stable of networks and various platforms presented in three blocks: afternoon, primetime and late-night, starting with opening ceremonies beginning at 8p on August 8. Highlights of each network’s offerings are:

  • Primetime will present live coverage of swimming, women’s and men’s gymnastics, beach volleyball and marathons.
  • USA Network with 165 hours of coverage will focus on basketball and soccer, as well as live tennis, water polo and volleyball.
  • MSNBC will serve up 175 hours including the initial soccer matches just prior to the opening ceremony. In addition, the news channel will offer basketball, softball, soccer, weightlifting, beach volleyball and wrestling.
  • CNBC has 95.5 hours committed to boxing coverage directly after Closing Bell on weekdays, plus a block from midnight to 4:30a that includes long-form coverage of softball, tennis, weightlifting and badminton.
  • Oxygen will have the least amount of coverage at 20 hours all aimed at the network’s female audience with daily updates on gymnastics, tennis and equestrian events.
  • Telemundo clocks in at 380 hours, the most of any of NBCU’s networks. Telemundo will offer live coverage of men’s and women’s soccer, track and field, gymnastics, basketball, diving, swimming and baseball.
  • Universal HD will present hi-def simulcast coverage from CNBC and MSNBC.
  • In addition, NBCOlympics.com will have live coverage of almost every sport represented except swimming and gymnastics.

TV One will air a series of four one-hour documentaries, Murder in Black in White this October that will explore unsolved civil rights murders from the 1940s and 1950s. Produced in co-operation with the FBI by filmmaker Keith Beauchamp and his company Till Freedom Come Productions, Murder in Black in White will be hosted by Rev. Al Sharpton and is scheduled to air on consecutive nights starting October 5 at 10p.

Beginning later this month, SCI FI Channel will filter in new anime series and movies into the network’s weekly Ani-Monday programming block from 11p-1a. Some of the new series from Starz Media’s anime distribution unit, Manga Entertainment, making their exclusive U.S. premieres include Gurren Lagann and Gundam 00. The block will also consist of classic series titles such as Now and Then, Here and There and Descendents of Darkness. Much of the programming additions are a result of the new partnerships and distribution deals Manga has made with Bandai Entertainment, Inc. and Central Park Media Corporation.

Country-style wedding bells ring once more on CMT as season two of My Big Redneck Wedding starts this October with eight new 30m episodes. Tom Arnold as host offers commentary as each episode documents more ho-down weddings that feature monster trucks, mud fights and more. The series is produced by Pink Sneakers Productions.

Montel Williams‘ talk show may have ended production, but he’s still at it.  According to B&C, Montel is shopping a new syndicated project called Living Well with Montel, based on a diet and lifestyle book published by Montel last January.  At this point, a distributor for the show has not been named, and the exact format of the project is still being worked out.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Online ad tracking service NebuAd is being called before a panel of Senators today to address privacy concerns regarding its targeting methods. The hearing, which will also call officers and lawyers from Microsoft, Google and Facebook, is the result of vociferous complaints from groups such as The Center for Democracy and Technology and the FTC’s Consumer Protection Bureau, which will also testify at the hearing. (The latter proposed a set of behavioral ad privacy principles late last year.) In attempt to head critics off at the pass NebuAd announced a new set of privacy protections yesterday, promising to notify consumers when their online activity is being tracked and offer them a way to opt out of the service. There’s a strong sense in the industry that these privacy battles being fought today will have serious repercussions for years to come, both on consumer rights and company profits.  Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYDreamWorks Animation and Intel have entered into a strategic alliance that will see the studio use Intel’s future chips and advanced multiple processing cores to aid in the production of future 3D animated movies with the goal of “revolutionizing 3D filmmaking technology.”  The agreement begins with Monsters vs. Aliens, which will have its domestic release on March 27, 2009.  You may remember that DreamWorks has said that it will produce all of its feature films in 3D by next year. Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  PorchLight Entertainment inked an exclusive international distribution, licensing and merchandising deal with Lincoln Butterfield Animation for its Tan animated series. Lincoln Butterfield will produce a 26×30-minute run with each episode consisting of two 11-minute shorts in time for a Fall 2009 launch. The K6-11-targeted show is about a new graduate (he’s actually an egg) from the Lo Fat Martial Arts Academy & Cooking School and how he sets off to find friends and fortune and learn the ways of the world. Just to add some interesting drama … Tan lives in a world with several crazy monkeys who wear little red Fezzes. Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
