Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 5, 2006 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.
Superman Returns (Warner Bros.) cruised out of its opening five-day July 4th holiday weekend holding tightly to #1 with an estimated total of $74 million, bringing the movie’s domestic gross to $106 million, which also includes numbers from Tuesday night’s preview, Wednesday opening day, Thursday and Imax receipts. Imax set a new record with open of Superman Returns marking its biggest open ever, earning upwards of $5 million for the week, the spot previously held by Warner Bros. release Batman Begins (2005) with $3.1 million. With all of that said, Superman Returns isn’t being seen as a grand slam hit, coming in behind prior July 4th movie opens including War of the Worlds ($64.9 million/2005), Spider-Man 2 ($88.2 million/2004) and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machine ($44 million/2003).
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
India’s UTV Toons, the animation unit of UTV Software Communications Ltd, has entered into several new production pacts worth upwards of $14 million, with Porchlight Entertainment and another with Mike Young Productions.
- UTV Toons has inked a deal with Porchlight Entertainment to co-produce and provide co-financing for Jay Jay’s Race Around the World, a 3D animated movie based on Porchlight’s TV series Jay Jay The Jet Plane, which is currently set for theatrical release during holiday 2007. Pre-production for the movie is slated to begin October 2006 at UTV in Mumbai and Porchlight Animation in LA.
- Under a deal between Taffy Entertainment, Mike Young Productions’ distribution arm, and Method Film France, UTV will co-produce the animated series Cosmic Quantum Ray (26 x 22 min.). Additionally, an animation services deal includes 13 hours of a combination of direct to DVD titles and TV episodes in 3D animation.
Over the weekend The Outdoor Channel premiered Bass Pro Shops Next Generation Television, a new kid-targeted reality series, on Saturday, July 1 at 10a. Co-hosted by a group of kids who regularly take part in outdoor sports, the series is shot and produced by Bass Pro Shops’ Video Productions team. Each episode features hunting and fishing trips, and segments including the Field Trip which offers instructions on how to make things (e.g. carve a balsa wood lure, build an aluminum boat etc.); the Diary Cam where kids say what is on their minds; Home Movies featuring viewer video clips’ and the Braggin’ Board where photos sent in from kids showing their hunting/fishing successes will be shown on-air.
Polara Productions’ Nanna’s Cottage (55 x 30 min), a new kid show debuted on Faith TV, on the Sky Angel Network, this past Saturday at 9a. The live action series features a 75 year-old grandmother, who is a world traveler and archaeologist. She offers her wisdom to her grandkids and their friends. On August 12, Nanna’s Cottage will join the Saturday morning lineup on Kids & Teens TV, the 24hr kid’s channel on Sky Angel Network. Polara Productions co-produces the series, in Hi-Def, with Chambers Productions in Eugene, Oregon.
Quiksilver, Inc. has partnered with Sprandi International Ltd., a sports and outdoor lifestyle company in Russia and Eastern Europe, to create a joint venture with the exclusive rights to design/manufacture/market/distribute Quiksilver and Roxy branded products in Russia. The joint venture will be responsible for establishing a Russian distribution network of company-owned retail stores as well as a wholesale business that will include licensed retail stores, key accounts and small independent retail chains. The new venture replaces a former license and distribution agreements in the region.
In other Roxy brand news, female longboarders are competing this week in Biarritz, France for the Roxy ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) Women’s World Longboard Championship presented by Evian. This is the first ever ASP endorsed world title for female longboarders with 60+ females competing in the 7-round contest. Simultaneously, and also presented by Evian, is the Roxy Jam Biarritz, a summer surf festival celebrating the female surfing lifestyle, live music, art exhibits among other activities.
Steven Madden, Ltd., a designer/marketer of fashion footwear and accessories, has entered into two new license agreements for watches under the Steve Madden and Steven by Steve Madden brands, and girls apparel under the Stevies brand, respectively. The company entered into a license agreement with Mamiye Brothers to design/manufacture/distribute a line of Stevies brand girls apparel, which will be sold exclusively through J.C. Penney beginning Holiday 2006.
LicenseBox has licensed the use of the likenesses of movie stars Humphrey Bogart and Gary Cooper to Ikoncity to appear in a series of video games for classic movie fans at the newly-launched social microsite (www.ikoncity.com). A merchandising and licensing company, LicenseBox is unit of the Moda Entertainment Company. Ikoncity Limited is a subsidiary is a subsidiary of Castletown.

Ronald D. Boire has been appointed as President, Toys “R” Us, US effective July 17. He will oversee all merchandising, marketing and operational responsibilities for the 587 store division. Boire, who will report to Gerald L. Storch, Chairman/CEO, Toys “R” Us, Inc, most recently was EVP/Global Merchandise Manager Best Buy Co., Inc. Previously, Boire spent 17 years at Sony Corporation where during his tenure he served as President, Sony Electronics Consumer Sales Company and President, Sony Personal Mobile Products Company.
Burton Snowboards has inked a deal to acquire Channel Islands Surfboards. Under the deal Channel Islands will remain based in Santa Barbara, CA with Al Merrick, continuing to head the company he founded in 1969. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
