Dentsu Inc. has launched a new US-based division, DCI Los Angeles (DCI-LA), to develop, co-produce, distribute and license original animation programs.  DCI-LA is seeking North American and European co-production partners to develop new animated properties aimed at K6-12 and males 17-25 for TV, home entertainment and other media, which will be backed by Dentsu Inc.  Additionally, DCI-LA is set to release the animation fantasy series Deltora Quest, based on Australian author Emily Rodda’s books by the same name, outside of Asian markets.  Helmed by Yuma Sakata, SVP, and Marc Harrington, VP/Business Development, DCI-LA is looking for broadcast partners and licensees across all territories and categories respectively.  Produced by OLM in association with Dentsu, the popular Deltora Quest series airs on TV Tokyo’s TV Aichi programming block. Now published by Scholastic, Inc., the Deltora Quest series is available in 30 countries.

Breakthrough Films & Television grows its TV movies division to include original TV movie development and production.  Heading up the expanded division is Marina Cordoni, Head of Sales and Business Development, Theatrical & TV movies.  Cordoni will oversee sales as well as acquisition of movie scripts, development and production of original TV movies and the international distribution of both original and acquired productions.  The first original project for the division is the development of Shadow Island Mysteries, a group of TV movies, which aren’t for kids, and that take place on the same mysterious island.  Breakthrough Entertainment, the company’s distribution arm is handling worldwide sales and pre-sales for all properties.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Warner Bros. has teamed with Alcon Entertainment to develop a family-targeted movie adaptation of the Looney Tunes’ Marvin the Martian, the character created by the great Chuck Jones, according to Variety.  The mixed live-action and CGI animated feature is expected to be a holiday movie and will be produced by Alcon principles Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove with Steve Crystal.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Warner Bros. has released the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince teaser trailer has been released and can be viewed at a variety of places (in three different HD sizes) including the newly updated official website for the movie.  Additionally, USA Today let fans in on the casting news that the young Tom Riddle is played by Hero Fiennes-Tiffin (10), who happens to be the nephew of actor Ralph Fiennes, who plays the adult Tom (aka Lord Voldemort).  The teen Tom will be played by Frank Dillane.  HP and the Half-Blood Prince will be released (regular version and Imax) on November 21, 2008.

Nickelodeon is set to premiere Stay My Baby, iCarly star Miranda Cosgrove’s first music video from a solo track on Monday, August 4 during a new episode of SpongeBob SquarePants at 6p.  The song is featured on Nickelodeon and Columbia Record’s new album iCarly  Music From and Inspired by the Hit TV Show from.  Following its debut, the music video will be available on TurboNick.

Nickelodeon makes some of its classic TV series available via Nick Rewind, a new catalog at the iTunes Store.  Nick Rewind will feature a mix of full-length episodes, seasons and best of volumes of Nick live-action and animated shows including: The Amanda Show; Clarissa Explains It All; Rocket Power; Hey Dude; Doug; and a range of others.

Telltale Games is developing a new episodic game series, Wallace & Gromit’s Grand Adventure, which is based on Aardman Animations’ Wallace & Gromit property.  In the game players can play both Wallace and Gromit.  A trailer and a free demo can be downloaded at www.telltalegames.com/wallaceandgromit .  Later this year, Wallace & Gromit will star in a new Aardman original short, bowing on TV, entitled A Matter of Loaf and Death.  Additionally, Aardman will release DVD compilations of the duo’s best shorts.

Koch Vision will release the BBC adaptation of Noel Streatfeild’s 1936 classic novel, Ballet Shoes, starring Emma Watson (Harry Potter’s Hermione), on DVD in the US on September 2, 208.  Bonus content on the DVD includes a 20-minute interview with Watson.

Octapixx Worldwide takes the international distribution rights to the animated holiday special and a new series, both of which it will offer at Mipcom Jr. and Mipcom 2008:

  • The Little Crooked Christmas Tree (1×30), a claymation animated special for kids/families narrated by Christopher Plummer.  The worldwide broadcast and home video rights are available.
  • Danni’s Tales (6×30), a HD mixed live-action and animated series that features original music and aims to get K3-8 singing and dancing, while also learning about animals from around the world.

MARKETING/LICENSING

While in general the idea of an elephant overhead might be a bit worrisome, this is one will come with its own group of wranglers.  Dr. Seuss’ Horton the Elephant will make his debut as a giant balloon (66 feet long, 36 feet wide and 48 feet tall) in the 82nd Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on Thursday, November 27, 2008 in NYC, which will be broadcast national on NBC (9a-12p).  Horton will also serve as Macy’s Official Holiday Ambassador, with an exclusive plush toy available at Macy’s stores.  Most recently Horton starred in the Fox feature film Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who!  In addition, Dr. Seuss’ Horton Hears a Who! will be released as a two-disc Special Edition DVD, single disc and Blu-ray on December 9, 2008.

Johnson’s launches a marketing campaign, Thanks, Mom, as part of the Johnson & Johnson’s company sponsorship of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.  Thanks Mom builds on the TV ad campaign that showcases a number of 2008 US Olympians thanking their moms for helping them achieve their dream of reaching the Olympics.  The unscripted spots feature an athlete speaking about their mom accompanied by family home video footage and photos.  Additionally, the Thanks, Mom digital campaign, available at www.baby.com/thanksmom, features extended clips of the athletes and an Olympic-themed cartoon featuring the voice of Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order, SVU) and five-time Olympic gold medalist Janet Evans, both new moms.
