Cynopsis: DIGITAL
Good morning, it’s Wednesday, July 30, 2008, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

Games appealing to broad audiences are proving to be little engines that could pull media companies through uncertain times. While ad revenue at Viacom was mostly flat during Q2, revenues from Rock Band and other ancillary streams were up 62% to $307 million, helping the company beat Wall Street estimates. Meanwhile game publishing giant Electronic Arts reported narrowed losses as revenue doubled to $809 million during the quarter. EA executives expect the turnaround to continue with a variety of releases planned for later this year on multiple platforms, from Spore on the PC to Dead Space on the PS3 and Xbox 360 to MySims on the Wii and Nintendo DS.

Sunday at Scripps Networks. A Prime Time for “Star” Gazing.

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

DirecTV is still winning the HD race, confirming plans to add more than 30 new HD channels next month including Planet Green HD, ABC Family HD and 23 regional sports nets, bringing its total offering to 130 HD channels. DirecTV will also be the first to offer all of its HD programming in MPEG-4 coding standard and Dolby Digital audio and plans to offer HD movies in 1080p later this year.

Nickelodeon made some of its classic TV series available via Nick Rewind, a new catalog at the iTunes Store.  Nick Rewind will feature a mix of full-length episodes, seasons and best of volumes of Nick live-action and animated shows including: The Amanda Show; Clarissa Explains It All; Rocket Power; Hey Dude; Doug; and a range of other titles.

CBSSports.com launched a new version of their free College Fantasy Football game, allowing users to recruit a team of college football players from any of the 120 Division I programs or customize their player pool to include any conference they choose. CBS gained permission to use actual player names in the game for the first time this year.

~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

Smash hit game Scrabulous was pulled from the Facebook site yesterday by its creators Rajat Agarwalla and Jayant Agarwalla less than a week after Scrabble license holder Hasbro filed suit against the developers for copyright infringement.

Contextual advertising company and operator of the ADSDAQ Exchange, ContextWeb, Inc  closed a $26 million Series D round of funding led by Investor Growth Capital. ContextWeb has raised a total of $54 million to date.

Call for Content: In the tradition of those drunken Dean Martin specials comes, “So You Think You Can Roast?,” a national online talent contest hosted by the Friars Club that kicked off yesterday with a roast of Vincent “Big Pussy” Pastore. Other roastees include George Takei, Apprentice diva Omarosa, “Peter Brady” and Howard Stern producer Gary Dell’Abate. Submit your promo reel for a chance to be the master roaster for Matt Lauer on Oct. 24.

~ GADGETS & APPS ~

Not since Sam Raimi strapped a camera to a flying eyeball in Evil Dead have we seen such technical innovation with cameras. NBC camera guru Garrett Brown and colleagues have come up with a few whiz-bang inventions to enhance coverage of the Summer Olympics, reports The AP.

  • Tiny HD “lipstick cams” will be placed on the athletes themselves to provide POV shots
  • The submerged “Dive Cam” will shoot down a plastic tube to capture the point of impact from the high dive
  • The “Sky Cam” will capture rowers and kayakers from far above the water course
  • GPS and digital course maps will be deployed to help viewers keep track of athletes progress on longer events

Microsoft gave the public its first glimpse of the touch screen-based Sphere at the company’s Faculty Summit in Redmond yesterday. The spherical computer utilizes an internal projection and vision system as its user interface, allowing users to move photos and documents around, play games or watch 360-degree videos with the movements of all ten fingers. Too bad it’s only a prototype.

~ TECHNOLOGY DEALS, MERGERS AND SKIRMISHES ~

After nearly a year and a half of regulatory debate, the Sirius Satellite Radio and XM Satellite Radio merger was finally approved. Sirius XM says the new company will embrace an “a la carte” programming strategy, (Kevin Martin’s long enduring dream for the cable industry), allowing consumers to mix and match which channels they like instead of forcing them to pay for shows they’re not interested in. The company will be based in New York with Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin serving as CEO and XM Chairman Gary Parsons taking the role of Chairman.

~ DIGITAL ADVERTISING ~

Clear Channel Radio and Katz Media Group unveiled a new online radio network spanning over 900 AM, FM, syndicated and independent internet stations with a unique audience of nearly five million listeners per week. The Katz Online Network will offer advertisers customized local, regional or national buys comprised of audio spots within streams, pre-roll audio or video ads, display as well as synchronized banners distributed via online media players.

Youth-targeted online ad network GoFish added MinyanLand to its network, a virtual community for kids and their parents designed to entertain and educate youngsters on finance and economics.

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

More than 20% of viewers surveyed watch some amount of primetime television programming online and half of these users are watching programming as it becomes available online, according to a new report by Integrated Media Measurement Inc. (IMMI). The other 50% are using the Web as a tool to watch past programming they have missed, or to re-watch segments of episodes they have already seen. Online viewing of a particular program was higher than DVR viewing of that same program, suggesting that the fairly large segment of non-DVR owners are adopting the computer for time-shifting rather than buying a DVR or dealing with cable providers’ clunky user interface. Consistent with other recent findings, the largest segment of online television viewers are white, affluent, well educated, working women aged 25-44.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Vonage Holdings Corp
. named former Cingular Wireless executive Marc Lefar as its new CEO. Marc replaces interim CEO Jeff Citron who will remain as Nonexecutive Chairman.

Brad Dancer has been upped to SVP/Research & Digital Media at National Geographic Channel, reporting to Steve Schiffman, GM & EVP. He heads up a team responsible for network research, providing guidance for program development, strategy and scheduling, as well as ad sales, consumer marketing and digital research.

~ WEBSITE OF THE DAY ~

There are some interesting usage patterns developing at WonderHowTo.com, the cleanly organized how-to video tutorial site launched by former TV executive Stephen Chao about 6 months back. Users go to the site for a wide variety of instruction – there are close to 150,000 videos catalogued so far in 436 categories. But they most often go to learn techniques and tips that need to be demonstrated visually. For instance, tech-related hacks and modifications (like how to install a video recording app on the iPhone) are among the most popular categories. The other two leading areas are dating and relationships videos (including intimacy tutorials) and magic/parlor tricks, according Mr. Chao. Despite intense competition in the space (IAC’s Life123.com became the latest entrant yesterday,) the former Fox development executive remains convinced that how-to will become a real sweet spot in web video both in terms of audience appeal and contextual advertising value. “Consolidation is inevitable but it remains a magical wonderful space,” he said.

Clarification: Yesterday’s item about Nickelodeon’s Avatar multiplayer game mentioned that Nick plans to broadcast hints during Sept. and Oct. airings of the Avatar show.  The network will actually be offering codes that unlock game features, not hints.
