Cynopsis: Kids!

07/28/10

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 28, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

AOL, The Jonas Group and MGX Lab, along with found partners including JCPenney Focus, launch Cambio online ( www.cambio.com ), a new teen-targeted online entertainment network offering original programming and interactive social network components.  Cambio is a free site that offers a daily show, series, specials and pop culture and entertainment news.  The site’s programming aims to feature teen-centric products “in an informative way.”  JCPenney is serving as the exclusive retailer of the site’s style-focused how-to show, Cambio Style.  The JCPenney partnership also includes four specials, one of which will be an ambush makeover special.  Additional partners include Bayer Diabetes Care, which will be involved in short-term projects such as sponsorship during November (National Diabetes Awareness Month) of Cambio Cares, a twice a month show focusing on celebrities doing good things.  Cambio’s programming slate includes:

  • Cambio Connect – a daily show from Hollywood hosted by Quddus (MTV) and featuring celebrity news, interviews, performances and event coverage.
  • Cambio Cares – a social-responsibility themed series focusing on celebrities trying to make a difference for various causes.
  • Cambio Goes Home – the show follows artists to their childhood home and explore their neighborhoods and meet their friends.  The first episodes feature singer Jordin Sparks and Matthew Morrison (Glee).
  • Cambio Style – the fashion trend series sponsored by JCPenney – featuring celebrity stylists and hair/make-up artists offering demonstrations and new styles.
  • Road Dogs – follow the Jonas Brothers and their softball team as they compete against local teams nationwide and during their down time.
  • Cambio Specials – these will cover events via live stream, miniseries and live chats.  Specials include: Warned tour behind the scenes with We The Kings, Nick Jonas in London, Demi Lovato’s South American Tour and live chats with the cast of Camp Rock.
  • Cambio Shorts – behind the scenes celebrity interviews and outtakes and artist generated video.

In the UK, Nickelodeon and family-centric amusement park Blackpool Pleasure Beach partner to develop the first Nickelodeon-branded attraction, Nickelodeon Land  Pleasure Beach, Blackpool is investing about $16 million in the new Nickelodeon Land.  Scheduled to open in April 2011, construction will begin this fall on the 261,360 square foot attraction at Pleasure Beach, which will feature 14 Nick related attractions (new rides, retail shops, games and restaurants) based on its kid properties, characters and green slime.  Other Nick-branded theme park attractions around the world include Nickelodeon Universe at the Mall of America in Minneapolis, Nick Central at Dreamworld Australia and Nickland at Movie Park Germany, as well as Nickelodeon attraction at Universal Studios in Florida and California.

Video game retailer GameStop enters into a deal to acquire online social gaming site Kongregate.  Kongregate will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of GameStop and will maintain its San Francisco headquarters with co-founders Jim and Emily Greer continuing to lead the company.  Slated to close around August 1, 2010, the terms of the deal were not announced.  Launched in 2007, Kongregate offers its 10 million monthly players 30,000+ free social games, which spend about 23 million hours per month on the site.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

The classic and adored picture book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day is being developed as a “high-concept family comedy” by Shawn Levy (Night at the Museum) and his 21 Laps with Fox, per VarietyThe Jim Henson Company holds the movie rights to Judith Viorst’s popular book, which it has assigned to Fox.  Rob Lieber (Septimus Heal: Magyk) will write the screenplay.  While this will be the first movie based on the book, Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day was adapted by HBO (1990) as an animated musical special, featuring music composer/lyricist by Charles Strouse (Bye Bye Birdie, Annie, All In The Family theme song, film score to Bonnie and Clyde, to name a few), and as a musical theatrical with the Kennedy Center (1998), featuring music/lyrics by Viorst and score by Shelly Markham.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Dora the Explorer celebrates her 10th anniversary with the new hour-long primetime TV movie, Dora’s Big Birthday Adventure, debuting Sunday, August 15 at 8p on Nickelodeon. The premiere of Dora’s Big Adventure will simulcast on Nick Mobile.  The movie features special guest stars Rosie Perez, John Leguizamo and Hector Elizondo.  Immediately following the movie at 9p, the network will premiere a 12-minute Dora 10th Anniversary documentary.  Executive produced by Brett Morgen (The Kid Stays in the Picture) and directed by Debra Eisenstadt, the documentary will include commentary by Dora creators Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh Valdes and Eric Weiner, real kids, other folks in the industry as well as a range of celebrities.  A sneak peek of Dora’s Big Adventure will be available on NickJr.com ( www.nickjr.com ) on Monday, August 2, and Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Entertainment will release the title on DVD on August 3, 2010.  Additionally, throughout August a selection of kid favorite Dora the Explorer episodes will be available via Nick on Demand, while celebration themed episodes will be available through Nickelodeon’s download-to-own partners.

DQ Entertainment International (DQE) inks an exclusive three-year broadcast deal with Thai Public Broadcasting Service (TPBS, Thailand) for the 3D animated TV series The Jungle Book (52 episodes).  Under the deal, TPBS has the exclusive free TV rights to televise The Jungle Book in both Thai and English across Thailand.  Slated for release this year, The Jungle Book is a co-production between DQE, TF1 (France), Moonscoop (France), and ZDF Group (Germany).

Say it ain’t so! Artemis Fowl ( www.artemisfowl.com ) author Eoin Colfer says that he’ll write just one final book in the tween-targeted action/adventure book series, per the Guardian.  Colfer’s seventh Artemis Fowl title, Artemis Fowl: The Atlantis Complex, releases in the US on August 3, and is already available in the UK.  In the interview with the newspaper, Colfer says in the next book, the eighth and final in the series, Artemis will be presented with a choice, “where he can be kind to somebody and he wont gain anything, or he can be unkind and he will find a million dollars in a suitcase, and he will choose the nice way, and that will be the end. That’s how I’m going to finish it, on a very simple choice.”  I’ll miss the adventures of the criminal mastermind and kid genius – the Artemis Fowl books are great and Colfer ( www.eoincolfer.com ) is a hugely entertaining writer and speaker.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Target Entertainment Group names BRB Internacional as the licensing sub-agent for the PlayStation brand and select PlayStation software intellectual properties throughout Spain and Portugal.  BRB will manage the merchandise program in the regions across all consumer product categories, excluding PlayStation peripherals and specific accessories.  The PlayStation intellectual properties licensed to BRB are LittleBigPlanet, EyePet, Invizimals and SingStar.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Rob O’Neill is named VP/Program Scheduling, Cartoon Network.  In this newly created position O’Neill will oversee scheduling, long range planning and develop on-air strategies for Cartoon Network and Boomerang.  Based in Atlanta, he will report to Stacey Isenhower, SVP/Programming and Scheduling.  Most recently, O’Neill spent the last 13-years at Disney ABC Cable Networks Group working in programming strategy and acquisitions, where he helped shift Disney Channel to basic cable, and toiled in programming for the channel, as well as being one of the first employees at Soapnet.  Additionally, O’Neill is a partner in Spot-On Entertainment (LA), a concert and theatrical booking company, and has produced several theater productions and tours.

Discovery Communications names two to its senior management team, with Bruce Campbell appointed Chief Development Officer and General Counsel and Lee Bartlett as EVP/Global Production Management, Business and Legal Affairs

  • Campbell, who had been President/Digital Media and Corporate Development for Discovery, takes the General Counsel reins from Joe LaSala, who plans to leave the company at the end of the year.   Working out of Silver Spring and New York City, he will continue to be responsible for Discovery’s global business development and lead the company’s mergers and acquisitions and development strategies.  He reports to President and CEO, David Zaslav.
  • Bartlett will oversee Discovery’s overall business affairs development and production management strategies, which includes programming acquisitions for all of Discovery’s networks and digital platforms worldwide. Based in LA, Bartlett joins Discovery on September 1, 2010 and will report to COO, Peter Liguori.  He will also maintain offices in Silver Spring and London.  He previously served as MD, ITV Studios for ITV in the UK and as EVP/Business Affairs for Fox.
