Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 27, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Kaley Cuoco (Penny on CBS’ Big Bang Theory) is tapped to host Teen Choice 2011, which will air live Sunday, August 7, 8-10p on Fox.  The 13th annual Teen Choice awards will also feature performances by OneRepublic and Selena Gomez & the Scene.  Teen Choice 2011 is executive-produced by Bob Bain (Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards) and Michael Burg, with Paul Flattery and Kelly Brock serving as producers, and Greg Sills as supervising producer.  A full list of categories and nominees is available at


Radio Disney will launch season four of N.B.T. (Next Big Thing), a daily multiplatform showcasing up and coming music acts, beginning Friday, October 14.  Over 10 weeks, Radio Disney and Disney Channel audiences can listen and watch and then vote for their favorite artist at ( ), via Radio Disney Facebook page (, or by testing to Disney (347689).  The winning act will have their single released by Disney Music Group.  Each artist/group will get equal play and at the end of each round there will be eliminations based on the fan voting, who will be allowed one registered vote per artist, per day, per format.  In addition to play on Radio Disney and Disney Channel, each artist will have two songs, exclusive videos, photos and bios on  Videos will also be featured on, the N.B.T. mobile website (, and radio Disney’s YouTube Channel ( ).

CBeebies invites Latin American and US Hispanic viewers to take part in Juega en la jungla (Play in the Jungle), a two-day mini marathon event on Saturday and Sunday July 30 and 31, running four hours each day beginning at 9a, as part of the channel’s Tiempo de Descubrir (Time to discover) block.  Each day Juega en la jungla will feature select episodes of the preschool 3D animated series Zigby.  CBeebies broadcasts in Spanish and is available in the US on Channel 848 as part of DISH Networks’ DishLATINO package.

In Canada, the Disney Junior channel will premiere the special episode Minnie’s Masquerade on Sunday, August 7 at 11a.  Leading up to Minnie’s big ball, Disney Junior will feature a morning marathon of Minnie Mouse-themed episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse that morning from 8:30a.  Minnie’s Masquerade and all the episodes in the morning’s marathon episodes will be available on Disney Junior OnDemand on August 12.  Disney Junior is a commercial-free channel available in English and French to subscribers in Canada.

The Wiggles and NCircle Entertainment enter into a new DVD distribution deal, under which NCircle will distribute new and original DVDs from The Wiggles, as well as their catalog product, in the US and Canada.  The first Wiggles DVD under the new deal with NCircle Entertainment is slated for release this fall.  The deal reunites The Wiggles, who are currently celebrating their 20th anniversary, with Debbie Ries, founder and SVP/GM, NCircle and former head of sales for Lyrick Studios/HIT Entertainment, which brought The Wiggles to North America back in 1999.

Upcoming home entertainment title releases include:

  • The new Yo Gabba Gabba! DVD, Yo Gabba Gabba: Music Makes Me Move!, is set for release by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment on August 9, 2011.  The DVD features four episodes of the series and features special guests including Tony Hawk and Laila Ali as well as music guests I’m From Barcelona and Lady Tigra.  Created by Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz, Yo Gabba Gabba! is produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain Entertainment.
  • Garfield and Odie celebrate Halloween on the DVD title The Garfield Show: Spooky Tails releasing on August 23 from Vivendi Entertainment.  The title is comprised of six Halloween-themed episodes of the CGI animated The Garfield Show, which is based on Jim Davis’ comic strip and currently airing on Cartoon Network.
  • Also spinning onto DVD on August 23 is Beyblade: Metal Fusion Vol. 4 from Nelvana Enterprises and Vivendi Entertainment.  The DVD also includes an exclusive code that unlocks special features on (
  • ).  The series comes from Nelvana and d-rights, and the new season debuts this year on Cartoon Network, with new tows from Hasbro also bowing this year, as well as a new videogame.

  • Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will release Angelina Ballerina: Dancing On Ice on DVD, Digital Download and On Demand on October 11, 2011.  Targeted to K2-7, the title includes five episodes of Angelina Ballerina, as well as a bonus feature of Polly’s Picture Matching game.


McDonald’s Happy Meal is getting a dietary boost as McDonald’s reveals its “Commitments to Offer Improved Nutrition Choices,” a long term plan that will see the chain makes changes to its menu to include healthier food options and further focus on providing nutritional information to help consumers, and employees, make informed choices now through 2020. 

  • McDonald’s first move is in its kid-targeted Happy Meal.  Beginning this September 2011, McDonald’s will roll out its new Happy Meal, which will automatically include both produce (e.g. apple slices, a quarter cup or half serving) and a smaller size French fry  (1.1 ounce) along with the usual option of a burger, cheeseburger of Chicken McNuggets, and choice of beverage, including the option of a fat-free chocolate mil and 1% low fat regular milk.  Consumers that prefer a side choice of apples only, two bags of apple slices will be available, upon request.  The restaurant has offered apples as a requested item in Happy Meals since 2004.  By Q1 2012, McDonald’s will automatically include produce or a low-fat dairy option with every Happy Meal.
  • The company estimates that the Happy Meal change will result in a 20% reduction in calories in the meals, as well as a reduction of fat in the meals too.  In 2012, McDonald’s also plans to focus on nutrition awareness messaging to kids and parents via national marketing efforts, which will include nutritional messaging in all of its national kid-centric advertising, merchandising, digital and Happy Meal packaging.  The company says it has already reduced sodium by 10% in most of its national chicken menu offerings, including most recently Chicken McNuggets, which are a popular component of the Happy Meal.


Chapman Entertainment goes through a restructuring in its London office across its licensing, marketing, production and finance teams, resulting in a range of layoffs.  While two Chapman Entertainment co-founders, Keith Chapman and Andrew Haydon, will stay on, co-founder, MD and Executive Producer Greg Lynn will exit the company.  The restructuring will see Valerie Fry become Commercial Director, overseeing licensing and marketing, with the support of Clare Wiggins, Head of Marketing and Live Events and Samantha Clapham, Product Development Executive.  The company is looking to appoint a licensing and marketing agent.  Emily Whinnett will continue to serve as Director of Production, managing the completion of filming of both Little Charley Bear and Raa Raa the Noisy Lion, which are set to deliver to CBeebies later this year and in 2012.  Erin Duffy will continue to lead the finance team in the short term with support of Agnieszka Earl.  Emma Way will remain as Legal Affairs Manager.  Keith Chapman said, “We are devastated to have to let go so many first class people who have contributed so much to our growth and success over the years.  I can’t thank them enough for all they have done. But with soaring costs and challenging trading conditions, we’ve been forced to make these tough decisions.”


The week of July 18, 2011 now stands as Disney XD‘s most watched week ever in Total Day among Tweens 9-14 (153,000).  On Monday, July 18 was also the channel’s most watched Monday ever, with several of its shows hitting series highs:

  • Pair of Kings (8p) earned a series high with Total Viewers (1.1 million), K6-11 (620,000), the latter also a time period high, and Boys 6-11 (289,000).
  • Kickin’ It (8:30p) set rating highs among Boys 6-11 (299,000) and Boys 9-14 (233,000).
  • Zeke and Luther (9p) also set a series high with K6-11 (509,000) and Boys 6-11 (277,000).

Cartoon Network‘s Friday, July 22 premiere of the original special, Lego: Star Wars (7p) was the top telecast of the day among Boys 9-14 (475,000), and the top program in its time period with Boys 6-11 (566,000), and were up by +45% and +105% versus the time period last year, respectively.  The special drew 1.5+ million Total Viewers overall.

Sunday, July 24 delivered The Hub its best Sunday (6a-11p) of the year with K2-11 and K6-11.  The day included Taylor Swift: Journey to Fearless (1p-4p), which saw week-to-week grains among K2-11 (93,000) up by +55%, and with K6-11 (57,000), an increase of +42%.
