Cynopsis: Kids!
07.24.13
Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 24, 2013, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Cartoon Network and The Lego Group are at it again. The two companies are jointly producing a new multi-format entertainment franchise called Mixels, which will launch next year simultaneously via content on Cartoon, digital gaming destinations and apps, and building toys. Mixels content, which will consist primarily of animated shorts, will air on Cartoon Network and the net’s web site and feature the colorful title characters that can mix and combine with one another in creative and unpredictable storylines. Additionally, a collectible portfolio of low-priced mini building sets will launch in three waves in 2014. Cartoon and Lego most recently collaborated on the Legends of Chima franchise.
We’re going to need a bigger sandbox. Sprout is unleashing a triple play of new, acquired programming. Popular British series Sarah & Duck will make its U.S. debut Aug. 19 as part of Sprout’s morning block, marking the inaugural deal between BBC Worldwide and the NBCU net. Next, French animated series Zou debuts on Sept. 2. Zou, which airs in 100-plus countries, is based on author Michel Gay’s books about growing up and the relationships between family members and friends. Then on Nov. 1 Sprout debuts Stella and Sam, based on the best-selling book series by Canadian author and illustrator Marie-Louise Gay. Sprout will support the series with 15 games on SproutOnline.com. More on the net’s new babies and programming plans in next week’s CynKids.
Disney XD’s Marvel Universe just keeps expanding. The network ordered a third season of its top animated series, Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man, which follows the adventures of Spidey and four other teen heroes Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Hulk–who join S.H.I.E.L.D.’s exclusive training program. From 2013 to date, Ultimate Spider-Man is Disney XD’s No. 1 animated series in Total Viewers (605,000) and the Ultimate Spider-Man games have been played 11 million times since the series launch. The series is exec-produced by Alan Fine, Dan Buckley, Joe Quesada and Jeph Loeb and stars Drake Bell, Chi McBride and Clark Gregg.
Speaking of Marvel… The full cast of upcoming flick Guardians of the Galaxy materialized in San Diego at Comic-Con last weekend.
Hub Network’s Transformers Prime Beast Hunters will wind down to a close Friday at 7:30 with series finale “Deadlock.” The final episode finds the Autobots with a chance to finally restore life to their home planet, but they and their human friends must face one last showdown with the Decepticons.
Disney Channel will premiere animated comedy series Wander Over Yonder on Friday, Sept. 13. Created and exec-produced by Emmy winner Craig McCracken, the series follows best friends, intergalactic traveler and constant do-gooder Wander and his quick-tempered but loyal steed Sylvia as they travel through the cosmos. The net will offer a first-look on Aug. 16 immediately following the premiere of Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel at 8p. WATCH Disney users will get an early look at the series, and new games will arrive on Disneychannel.com Aug. 23.
Attention momagers… TLC on Aug. 7 will debut one-hour special Raising Fame. The show follows three young Hollywood hopefuls and their mothers, who leave it all behind and move to LA with dreams of besting the unlikely odds of becoming the next superstar.
BabyFirst is launching the two-hour programming block Preschool Basics, aimed at parents seeking additional tools to introduce their little ones to preschool concepts. Anchoring the block is new original series Baby U, which features popular characters from the network – including Harry the Bunny and Peekaboo – sharing lessons in math, vocab, art and music. Baby U expands on the web site of the same name, which the network launched in 2011. The BabyFirst network is currently available in 80 million households in 33 countries, including 35 million homes in the US via basic packages on DirecTV, Dish and Comcast.
MORE KIDS NEWS
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away… So begins the latest chapter of the Star Wars saga starring two rather unexpected characters–Phineas and Ferb. The creators of Disney’s animated series are at work producing a one-hour TV Star Wars tribute set to premiere next year on Disney Channel and Disney XD. The ep places Phineas and Ferb in the same space and time as Star Wars, where they find themselves thrust into a global rebellion when the plans for blowing up the Death Star accidentally fall into their hands. Throw in some complications when Candace starts chasing the troublesome brothers across the galaxy and the appearance of Vader-wannabe Darth Enschmirtz on the Death Star, and you’ve got a force, ahem, to be reckoned with.
There’s no dearth of Hollywood love for its rising stars and young viewers. Noms for the 2013 Young Hollywood Awards, honoring best emerging talent in television, film and music, are in. Pretty Little Liar’s Lucy Hale, Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington, The Way Way Back’s Liam James, Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany, Fashion Police’s Kelly Osbourne and Carrie Diaries’ AnnaSophia Robb. The CW will air the awards show live from the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, 8-10p Aug. 1.
Speaking of Carrie Diaries, the show has cast newcomer Lindsey Gort as a series regular in the role of young Samantha Jonesthe character made infamous by Kim Cattrall. The series returns to The CW for season two on Oct. 25.
In the wake of the death of series star Cory Monteith, Fox’s Glee is postponing the season premiere from Sept. 16 to Sept. 26. Exec producer Ryan Murphy told news outlets the show will pay tribute to Monteith, who played high school quarterback Finn Hudson, in the third episode. The first two epsa two-part Beatles tribute had already been written.
Jennette McCurdy, aka Sam from Nick series iCarly, is the celebrity mentor for the 2013 Kidz Star USA talent search for kids 15 and under. Aspiring young singers can enter to win a RCA Records recording contract, through Aug. 30. Hopefuls can upload a 90-second performance online at Kidzbop.com or audition in person at select Six Flags theme parks. Four finalists will be flown to Hollywood to compete on stage at a Six Flags Magic Mountain finale event Sept. 28, where McCurdy will make an appearance and help determine the winner.
ABC Family is not renewing Bunheads, the comedy/drama created by Gilmore Girls’ Amy Sherman-Palladino. The season one finale aired on February 25. “We took extra time to try and find ways to bring the series back,” said a statement from the net, “but in the end it simply wasn’t possible.”
Cynopsis is proud to welcome David Levy, President of Sales, Distribution and Sports for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. for a candid one-on-one conversation about the state of sports, media and advertising at the Cynopsis Sports Business Summit. Bolstered by the TBM premiere, Disney Channel delivered one-year highs in Total Day for July 19 for K2-11, K6-11 and tweens.
