Fresh off landing 14 Primetime Emmy nominations last week, Netflix is moving to widen its original programming beyond TV series to include feature documentaries and stand-up comedy specials. There’s enough room in the sandbox for everybody, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings assured CNBC yesterday, saying he’s not worried about big-spending Hulu and Amazon threatening his subscriber base. “We have different content than they do,” said Hastings. “I think what’ll happen is they’ll do great work and we’ll do great work…I think the more shows the better. They don’t steal from each other  they build on each other.” Comparing the streaming services to broadcast nets, Reed said, “We compete very successfully because we have content they don’t have. And they have content, frankly, that we don’t have. And so they’re really just like two different channels, ABC and CBS. People will watch shows from both us and Hulu and Amazon. And by the way  the one with the most content is cable and satellite. And they’ll continue to get watched.”

Three canceled CBS dramas are available for streaming this summer during the net’s “Second Look” campaign. Jericho (2006-2008), Swingtown (2008-2009) and Wolf Lake (2007) can all be viewed on  “Over the years, fans have told us they’d like to experience these shows again, and through, we’re able to resurface programming,” said Jeff Grossman, vp of content and product strategy for CBS Interactive. CBS isn’t the only net hearing from fans eager for a revival of cult faves – there had been talk that Netflix would resuscitate Jericho. In May, Netflix chief content officer Ted Saranos told Stuff, “I don’t think a day goes by that I don’t get an email or a personal hand-written letter about that show.”

Alibaba Group, the Chinese e-commerce giant, is set to enter the smart TV industry with a set-top box product. The box can stream television shows and movies, as well as play games and music via a remote control or a user’s own smartphone. However, its main focus is online shopping. “The process makes shopping very simple, and suitable for a large number of consumers,” said Yu Ce, vice president for Alibaba Group.

Velocity matters. Verizon Communications has boosted the maximum speeds for its FiOS Internet service to 500 Mbit/s downstream and 100 Mbit/s upstream. Verizon has started rolling out its latest FiOS Quantum Internet product in parts of every FiOS market and plans to expand the service throughout the entire FiOS footprint by next year. The company is pitching the new high-speed tier to consumers and businesses for approximately $300 a month and up, depending on how it’s bundled with other services. With the move, Verizon says it now offers the fastest broadband speeds among North American cable operators and telcos, surpassing Comcast Corp. Only Google Fiber, which offers symmetrical 1Gbit/s service in the Kansas City area and plans to extend service to Austin, Texas, Provo, Utah and other markets shortly, claims higher transmission speeds in the U.S. and Canada.

CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker acknowledged the importance of mobile media at the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen yesterday, saying, “We’re not going to care what screen you’re watching CNN on as long as there’s a CNN red logo on whatever asset you’re using to access us.”


Facebook has given Trendrr preliminary access to previously unanalyzed Facebook user engagement data on chatter relating to television content. Via that access, a new study has revealed that social activity tied to TV on Facebook dominates all others. Trendrr’s analysis during the week of May 13-19 found that the volume of Facebook user engagement relating to television programming was 5 times as large as all other social networks combined. While activity related to broadcast television was 7 times as large, activity linked to cable-television programming was 4.5 times as large as all other social networks combined. Second-screen activity levels on Facebook were particularly high among viewers of dramas and comedies.


Speaking of Facebook, the company is testing a program in which suggestions for mobile games will pop up in users’ notification menu, reports AllThingsD. The suggestions will show up among the likes, comments and other notifications from a user’s FB friends. The mobile game suggestions are based on your existing game play.

New MapifyPro Software allows full customization of Google Maps, including the ability to use custom map images in lieu of the standard Google Map designs. While it’s intended primarily as a store locator, customers using MapifyPro are tailoring the software into everything from a road trip tracker to online videogame maps.


Jeff Hirsch has been named Chief Marketing Officer of global digital media company CPX Interactive. Hirsch, who held senior executive roles at Valueclick, Fastclick, and AudienceScience, will be responsible for directing global product strategy and overall marketing communications.

David Shall has been promoted to Chief Operating Officer & General Counsel at Vuguru. Shall, formerly Head of Business Operations and General Counsel, has been a part of the company’s team for three years. He previously served as Executive Vice President, Business Operations/General Counsel at FremantleMedia North America, Inc., where he oversaw business affairs for American Idol, America’s Got Talent and The Price is Right, and assisted in the formation and operation of Atomic Wedgie, FremantleMedia’s Digital Comedy Studio.

Reality TV darling Nicole Richie, remembered from E!’s The Simple Life, has scored another hit. Candidly Nicole, the reality/lifestyle series starring the outspoken and wise-cracking socialite, has garnered more than 10 million viewers since it debuted on AOL in April. The show follows Richie as she shares her perspective on everything from relationships to style. Episodes have included her getting a “tramp stamp” removed to auditioning for Toddlers and Tiaras. Stylized as “#CandidlyNicole,” the series is based on Richie’s Twitter Feed, which has over 4 million followers and was a big reason why AOL greenlit the series.
