07/16/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 16, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

A small group of leaders from SAG and the Alliance of Motion Picture & Television Producers will convene today for a “sidebar meeting” at the AMPTP headquarters in Sherman Oaks. AMPTP made it clear that they are willing to meet with SAG, but only to listen. AMPTP leaders continue to urge SAG to take its final offer from June 30, saying the deal cannot be negotiated further. If the studio’s offer is ratified by August 15, the terms will be retroactive to July 1.

Tonight’s Premieres:
A&E: Dog the Bounty Hunter at 9p
Bravo: Project Runway at 9p
MTV: Run’s House at 10p
TV Land: Family Foreman at 10p

Tonight’s Finale:
NBC: Celebrity Circus at 10p

THE N TOTALLY GETS TEENS AND YOUNG WOMEN.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

TNT’s season debut of The Closer Monday night at 9p pulled in nearly 2.5 million A18-49 viewers, 3.3 million A25-54 viewers and 7.8 million total viewers. The season debut of Saving Grace followed at 10p with 1.6 million A18-49 viewers, 2.3 million A25-54 viewers and close to 5.2 million total viewers.

Last Sunday’s series premiere of Brooke Knows Best on VH1 at 10p posted a 1.3 rating and averaged 1.4 million viewers among A18-49. The opening episode also averaged 2.0 million total viewers.

When his contract expires at the end of this year, Brit Hume, who has been with Fox News Channel since its inception in 1996, will give up his dual post as anchor for the network’s Special Report program and as Washington managing editor, reports the Washington Post. Brit will remain with Fox News and will from time to time anchor special events, be involved as a political analyst and become a substitute host for Fox News Sunday when Chris Wallace is unavailable. Fox News Chairman, Roger Ailes said he hasn’t made a move to replace Brit’s position as there is some question about the possibility of the Special Report program not continuing.

NBC Universal is expected to sell its affiliate, WTVJ/Miami to the Post-Newsweek Stations group, which already owns WPLG, the ABC affiliate in that market, reports TVNewsday. The deal, with FCC approval pending, would allow Post-Newsweek Stations to operate the stations as a duopoly. Despite terms not being divulged yet, NBCU could get from $350 to $400 million for the NBC station.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: The final results for the week of July 7, 2008:
NBC: 7.50 million total viewers and 1.8/8 A25-54
ABC: 7.31 million total viewers and 1.8/8 A25-54
CBS: 5.62 million total viewers and 1.3/6 A25-54

And a reminder — Cynopsis editorial staff are all on vacation all next week which means no editions for the week.  We will be returning on Monday, July 28.  With that said, however, our Sales and Marketing staff will be available to you all week long, as usual!

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM THE N

FRIDAY NIGHT ON THE N= #1

For teens and young women, The N was THE place to be on Friday night. With the summer return of fan fave Degrassi, and reality series premieres of Queen Bees and The N’s Student Body, The N outperformed every other network in ad-supported cable among both teens and women 12-24*.

DEGRASSI + QUEEN BEES + The N’s STUDENT BODY = #1

Like we always say, The N “gets” teens.

*The N Network was ranked #1 from 8-11p vs. all ad supported cable for teens, female teens and women 12-24 in Live+SD coverage ratings.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

FX announced news and future plans for many of its current and new series:

  • Nip/Tuck will finish its run as a series in 2011. FX ordered 19 new episodes of the series on top of the 22 already in production, which will take the series to its 100th episode mark.
  • It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia gained 39 additional episodes with season four scheduled to debut on September 18.
  • The comedy Testees got a 13-episode order and a premiere date of October 9 in the time period following It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. The sitcom is about two buddies in their early 30s who make a career out of being medical guinea pigs.

  • Michael J. Fox will have a recurring role on season five of Rescue Me which opens next spring. He will play the boyfriend of Andrea Roth, who portrays the estranged wife of Denis Leary’s character.
  • The Shield’s final season will debut September 2 while the new drama The Sons of Anarchy premieres September 3.

Billy Crystal signed on to host the six-hour documentary series Make ‘Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America produced by Thirteen/WNET New York and Ghost Light Films. The documentary, which is slated to air next January, will look at the various forms of American comedy and its evolution as it relates to social issues, political change and its commentary on American life. It will also look at some of the top comedic talents from the past and present such as Charlie Chaplin, Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, George Carlin, Jon Stewart and more.

Nancy Glass Productions made several exclusive talent and development deals, covering a variety of topics:

  • Josie Smith-Malave, the finalist on Bravo’s Top Chef along with her New York City party planning and catering team
  • Four explorers who each want to be the first to journey 700 miles across Antarctica to the South Pole
  • The Van Duzer Brothers also known as “The Brothers of Invention”

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: The gaming and entertainment worlds continue to converge. The fruits of a new culture of collaboration among divisions at Sony became evident as the company kicked off a video downloading service for the PlayStation3 yesterday. The store will offer an initial 300 movies and 1,200 TV show episodes, some in HD, from at least 7 major studios including Sony, Paramount, Fox, Disney, Warner Bros., MGM and Lionsgate. Meanwhile Microsoft announced a partnership with Netflix to stream movies and TV episodes to the TV via the Xbox Live store, offering access to more than 10,000 downloadable “Watch Now” titles. The company also cut deals with NBC Universal and Endemol to bring more than 700 Universal films and NBC, USA and Sci Fi episodes to the platform for purchase, along with an interactive version of the gameshow 1 vs. 100. What is interesting about all of this is that the studios are known to be notoriously stingy in sharing revenue on digital platforms (Apple keeps little of the revenue generated from iTunes content sales.) Gaming platforms are being forced to do whatever they can to keep players in front of their consoles, even if its means taking time away from playing $50 games. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

THE N IS THE NETWORK TOTALLY FOR AND ABOUT TEENS.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY
Sesame Workshop
plans to launch its new and improved $14 million redeveloped Sesame Street website on August 11, 2008 to coincide with the debut of the 39th season of the series, which airs on PBS, per the New York Times.  According to the report, Sesame Workshop created the new site following research that found kids were not interested a “linear television-like experience,” but they did “respond strongly to having a Muppet guide them.”  So, the site showcases live-action video including Muppets, versus flash animated content, and different themes and activities each day, as well as some 3,000 videos and 400 games.  The new site also features PlaySafe, a proprietary technology that, when activated, makes it complicated for younger kids to navigate from the site.  The website is free and will be supported via sponsorships, which are targeted to parents and will appear at the bottom of the page.  Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  CBS Paramount International Television and Middle East Broadcasting Center inked a multi-year agreement for both new and returning shows such as NCIS, Medium, Numb3rs and The Doctors.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL.
