CYNTHIA TURNER’S
CYNOPSIS

07/14/04

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 14, 2004, and this is your first early morning briefing.

The WB has ordered up 13 more eps of its summer teen drama Summerland and will bring the show back midseason. The show has averaged a #1 ranking on Tuesday night among teens and female teens, and #2 among W12-34.

USA Network launched its new series The 4400 on Sunday night (if you haven’t seen it yet, you should) and delivered 7.4 million viewers.  According to USA, this series premiere was the most-watched original series premiere in basic cable history.  In demos, the show earned a 3.5 A18-49 and a 3.8 A25-54.

A hearing has been set for July 23 in the Los Angeles Superior Court in the cast brought by NBC Universal against Pat O’Brien and Paramount’s new series, The Insider which O’Brien will host.  The suit alleges O’Brien violated an exclusivity clause in his NBCU contract by promoting and talking about his new gig prior to the expiration of the clause which is August 28.  NBCU asked and was denied a Temporary Restraining Order to prevent any further promotion by O’Brien. At the July 23 court date, NBCU is expected to requested a Preliminary Injunction.

A new satellite delivered cable network is on the horizon — Network Creative Group (NCG), led by Stan Hitchcock, announced the launching of BlueHighways TV.  The channel is described as a “family friend television destination of remarkable entertainment, folklore and information for audiences interested in all aspects of American life and heritage.” The network has been running a test program schedule since February 2004 with a variety of original and acquired programming.  If you’re attending CTAM in Boston later on this week, you’ll see them there as one of the conference sponsors.

Intermedia Advertising Group’s Top Ten Most Effective New Ads for new campaigns airing the weeks of June 21-July 4, 2004. The Recall Score is the percentage of TV viewers who within 24 hours are able to remember the brand of the ad they saw during normal TV viewing. The History Channel presents This Day in History:
1881 – Sheriff Pat Garrett shoots William Bonney, popularly known as Billy the Kid, to death at the Maxwell Ranch in New Mexico.  With as many as 17 murders to his name by the age of 18, Billy the Kid was arrested by Garrett, brought to trial, and sentenced to death.  He escaped from jail, and Garrett, after tracking him for three months, received a tip about his hideout, waited in Billy’s darkened bedroom, and shot the fugitive to death at close range.
