Cynopsis
07/12/06
Good Morning. It’s Wednesday, July 12, 2006, and this is your first early morning briefing.
Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. and Major League Baseball have signed a new television agreement through 2013. TBS will air MLB Division Series Playoff games exclusively starting in 2007. TBS will also cover 26 regular season Sunday afternoon games beginning in 2008 which supplants TBS, Inc.’s current deal to carry Atlanta Braves games nationally. TBS will still carry 70 Braves games nationally in 2007, then net down to 45 games on WTBS locally in Atlanta from 2008 through 2013. Additionally, the agreement states TBS can air the MLB All-Star Game Selection Show every year from 2007 through 2013.
Tonight’s Premiere:
Bravo: Project Runway at 9p (Casting Special) and 10p (first episode)
A fall primetime programming update from CBS: the network will flip two comedies on Monday nights – the new show The Class will lead off Monday’s comedy block at 8p, followed by season two of How I Met Your Mother at 830p.
Nothing is definite, but according to Hollywood Reporter, TNT and Oxygen are in the midst of final negotiations to split the cable rights to the ABC off-net series Grey’s Anatomy, distributed by Buena Vista Television. The shared deal would allow for TNT to air the show in daytime, while Oxygen would get the evening airings. HR says the combined license fee from both networks for the series is in the one million dollar per episode neighborhood, with Oxygen providing the lion’s share. The off-net cable window would begin in 2009, tho reportedly the Oxygen deal has it picking up a weekly airing of the series as early as this January – also attributing to the network’s share of the license fee.
WE tv will add a new original series to its fall 2006 programming schedule. Premiering September 30 will be the half-hour program Unwrapping Macy’s, a behind-the-scenes look at the famous department store headquartered in New York’s Herald Square. Each of the eight episodes will cover the many employees of the store – from window dressers to the balloon handlers for the annual parade. The show is produced by True Entertainment.
Beginning August 14, The N will debut Dawson’s Creek in a 12-episode back-to-back marathon beginning at 6a. The N acquired all six seasons, or 128 episodes, of the one-hour teen drama and it will be striped weeknights starting August 16 at 7p and again at 10p.
MTV will premiere season three of its high school reality drama Laguna Beach on August 16 at 10p. This new season promises not only new faces, but lots of breakups, hookups, love triangles and more involving high school intrigues in Orange County, CA.
CBS‘ summer reality series Rock Star: Supernova has been hit with a law suit filed by an Orange County rock and roll band named Supernova. The band has been around since the late 1980’s and has filed suit against CBS, Mark Burnett Prods, as well as each of the show’s band members including Tommy Lee, for trademark infringement and unfair competition. The suit is looking to eliminate Supernova from the show’s name, any reference made to Supernova within the show and to publish statements clarifying that Supernova is a band already established.
As American Latino TV enters its fifth season in October, the English-language AIM Tell-A-Vision Group show picked up a slew of renewals and new affiliates with a presence in more than 100 markets across the country. Key renewals include KABC/LA, WBBM/Chicago, KTXA/Dallas, WFOR/Miami and others. New clearances for the fifth season debut include WWOR/NY, KDVR/Denver, KTXH/Houston, KQCA/Sacramento, WRDQ/Orlando and more. American Latino TV’s companion program, Latination, also cleared 90 markets for its third upcoming season with renewals at KCAL/LA, WCIU/Chicago, KCWX/San Antonio and new clearances with WWOR/NY, KDVR/Denver, WCTX/Hartford and WVUE/New Orleans, among others.
Get your mobile phone ready to take video, as Current TV will be the first network to feature cell phone video content with the launch of Current Mobile. Adding to its viewer created content, Current Mobile will become a regular showcase on the network and it will be sponsored by Sony Ericsson. The content will be short and will capture moments or events instead of full stories. “Phonojournalists” are encouraged to shoot video via their mobile phones and upload the items to Current’s online studio at www.current.tv/mobile. Each mobile upload aired will earn $100 and anyone around the world can submit. To get people excited, Current is offering a summer promotion called MobileVision to capture summer festivals, fashion and other topics posted on the network’s web site. The public can vote for their favorites and each Thursday through August 31 a new winning video will be granted a $500 prize and be considered for broadcast by Current’s programming department.
The thirteen stations recently purchased by Raycom Media Inc. from Liberty Corporation, will air The Tube Music Network, a division of The Tube Media Corp. “The Tube” will air in new markets such as Louisville, Montgomery, Evansville, Jackson and Lubbock. A total of 40 Raycom stations will carry the digital multicasting network with a U.S. penetration of 71% of U.S. TV households.

At roughly this time, Chaucer begins work on the wonderful Canterbury Tales, a series of stories narrating the experiences of a mixed group of nobles, peasants, and clergy on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury.
