Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, July 11, 2007 and this is your first early morning briefing.  And a quick reminder – Cynopsis is on vacation all next week, no editions, no emails, no phone calls from us.  Can you imagine? But we’ll be back on the 23rd, just as if this little break never happened.

Okay Potter-ites … and those of you at Warner Bros … this is the first of your two big days this month is here.  Go forth and see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, if you can get a ticket.  To that end, The Nielsen Company has released a new overview about the impact that J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter has had on the entertainment history.  Some of the top facts are that since the first Potter book was published in 1998, the six books have sold 22.5m copies in the UK, and 27.7 million in the US.  As for the movies, the combined box office take for the first four movie adaptations of the Potter books is $3.5 billion worldwide.  And you can’t sell books or promote movies without advertising – here in the US ad spending for all Harry Potter branded merchandise (that books, movies, DVDs and other promotional products) is a grand total of $269.1 million.  Meanwhile outside the US from 2000 to date, the ad spending for all things Harry comes to $119.3 million.  The question is however, how much have you spent on Harry?

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Electronic Arts has offered up a bit of news about the first two, of three, original titles currently in development in collaboration with director/producer Steven Spielberg at EA Los Angeles.  The actual titles for both releases have yet to be announced.  The first of the titles will be released exclusively for the Wii is chock full of 100+ action games, which use building blocks for players to build and destroy structures.  The game will feature single player, co-op and versus gameplay. The second title, slated for release for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC, is an action/adventure puts the player as the lead character in an epic journey about you and a mysterious female character.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Tigger and Pooh will get their own marathon, when Disney Channel airs a bakers dozen worth of episodes of its series My Friends Tigger & Pooh on Saturday, August 4, 6a-12n.  The marathon is comprised of the first twelve episodes of My Friends Tigger & Pooh and the premiere of a new episode.  A production of Disney Television Animation, Brian Hohlfeld serves as both executive producer and story editor on the series.

Channel One and NBC News have entered into a partnership to produce a daily teen-targeted news and public affairs broadcast to run on Channel One.  NBC News will help support Channel One’s news and reporting efforts.

Say it ain’t so! But I’m afraid it is … case closed!  Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim will wrap thing up for its animated series, Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law after six seasons and 39 episodes.  Adult Swim will televise the last two new episodes of the series this month, the second of which is a 30 minute special, on July 15 and July 22 respectively, at 11:45p.  Based on characters created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, the Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law series, which is funny as can be – but not for kids, burst out of the brains of Michael Ouweleen and Erik Richter and was part of the original Adult Swim Sunday night block, both of which premiered in September 2001.  Now I don’t want to start any rumors … but … I hear that Harvey is being considered for the role of the new Manhattan District Attorney on Law & Order, which needs filling following Fred Thompson’s exit to run for president.  Let me just say … watch out Sam Waterston!

And while we’re on the “so long, been good to know you” train, Conde Nast has given Jane Magazine the boot, a fashionable one no doubt, but still it is buh-bye.  Launched ten years ago, originally as a Fairchild publication, Jane’s founder, original editor in chief and namesake, Jane Pratt, left the publication in 2005.  Conde Nast’s parent company, Advanced Publications, acquired Fairchild in 1999.  The final issue of Jane hits newsstands on July 24.

Jetix Europe and Shout Factory have entered into a new North American licensing deal for two animated properties.  Under the pact, Shout Factory will be the exclusive home entertainment distributor of Pucca (39×30′) and Oban Star Racers (26×30′), for Jetix Consumer Products.  The first Pucca and Oban Star Racers titles will be released in 1Q 2008.  Branscome International set up the deal. 

Decode Entertainment has been awarded the worldwide TV and home entertainment distribution rights to Turner Broadcasting’s new live-action comedy My Spy Family (26×22′).  The series will premiere on Turner’s Boomerang UK channel this September, and introduced at MIPCOM in October.  Targeted to K6-14, My Spy Family revolves around a family of former international spies, who now reside in an ordinary house in a small town trying their best to embrace retirement.  The series is co-produced by Turner Broadcasting and Kindle Entertainment, the latter is an indie production company founded last year following ITV Productions announcement that it would no longer commission kids programming and closed.

MARKETING/LICENSING

BBC Worldwide Australasia has appointed Global Licensing New Zealand with the merchandise rights for its properties including the preschool series, In the Night Garden, as well as Dr. Who (classic and new version of the TV series) and Top Gear.  Global Licensing NZ will also set up local licensing partners for the three across a range of categories including apparel, accessories and games.  Global Licensing NZ will launch a line of apparel in early 2008, followed later in the year by house wares, accessories, stationery, footwear, bags, and games.  Hasbro, the master toy licensee, will launch a toy line based on Ragdoll’s In the Night Garden this October, alongside books from Penguin and DVDs from Roadshow.

STONE SOUP

Casting Call:  Warner Premiere and Alloy Media + Marketing have partnered to launch an online casting call contest on Alloy’s teen-girl targeted contest community Sugarloot.com.  Would-be teen actresses can go online and audition for either of the two lead roles of Warner Premiere’s 2008 direct-to-DVD release, The Clique.  Visitors to Sugarloot.com will be able to vote on the auditions.  Based on the author Lisi Harrison’s young-adult book series, The Clique, is the first title to be released under a new deal between Warner Premiere and Alloy Entertainment, a unit of Alloy Media + Marketing, the latter serving as producers on the project. According to Media Metrix, in April 2007, Sugarloot.com’s debut month, 100,000+ unique users visited the site.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

BrainPop announces executive moves and new hires.

  • Karina Linch moves up to SVP, BrainPop.  The former NYC public school teacher will be responsible for structuring the organization and providing operational support, as well as continuing to oversee BrainPop Jr.
  • Moving from the company’s Tel Aviv office to NYC headquarters is Eyal Bino, who has been named VP/Business Development.  Bino will establish and manage strategic partnerships.
  • Joining BrainPop is Paul Kuhne as VP/Marketing & Communications, to oversee the company’s integrated marketing, public relations and client communications to build brand awareness and identify new business development.  Most recently, Kuhne lead Institutional Marketing at Tutor.com.
  • Traci Kampel signs on as Director/Communications, guiding trade and consumer efforts, as well as working with other departments to build the brand and community outreach.  Previously, she was with Kaplan, Inc.
