Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 9, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
An early blowout still propelled ESPN’s telecast of the BCS National Championship to the second largest audience of any program in cable television history, according to Nielsen, with an average of 17,216,000 households and 26,380,000 viewers. The game’s US household rating averaged a 15.1 and ranked behind only the 2011 BCS Championship on ESPN two years ago on the all-time charts. The game was up 9% in average viewership. Overall, ESPN’s offering of the five BCS bowl games tallied an average of 15,131,000 viewers, up 7% over last year.
In the digital realm, the college football card on ESPN’s redesigned ScoreCenter app had an average minute audience of more than 2,000, up 303% over last year while football content on ESPN.com drew an average minute audience on Monday of nearly 22,000, marking an increase of 70% over 2012.
CBS laid out plans for Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, Feb. 3, announcing that Jim Nantz and Phil Simms will call the action, marking the third time that Nantz calls play-by-play for the Super Bowl. Pre-game coverage of Super Bowl XLVII will include a seven hour marathon beginning with Road to the Super Bowl at 11a, New Orleans: Let the Good Times Roll (hosted by Wynton Marsalis) at noon, Phil Simms All-Iron Team: Super Bowl Edition at 10 and The Super Bowl Today from 2-6p. In addition, CBS Sports Network debuts its Super Bowl coverage with more than 50 hours of original programming.
Meanwhile, the NFL is bringing back its 2nd Annual NFL Honors the night before the big game. The two-hour primetime awards special will air nationally on Saturday, February 2, 9-11p and will once again be hosted by Alec Baldwin as the Associated Press announce their annual accolades in an awards show format. Kicking off the night will be Super Bowl Saturday Night presented by Xfinity, a red carpet show on NFL Network starting at 8p, featuring the sights and sounds of Super Bowl week as well as the stars who will be celebrating the best of the NFL later that evening.
The newborn CBS Sports Radio is hitting the road with a slate of programming originating from New Orleans in anticipation of Super Bowl. Content starts Monday, Jan. 28 at 6a the morning show featuring Tiki Barber, Brandon Tierney and Dana Jacobson, and include broadcasts from John Feinstein, Jim Rome and Doug Gottlieb.
Sunday’s NFC Wildcard battle between the Seattle Seahawks and the Washington Redskins posted a 21.5/36 fast national rating/share with 38.1 million viewers to mark a 24% spike over last year’s 17.3/36 on FOX. The game also ranked as FOX’s third best national rating for the NFC Wildcard game and the network’s second most-watched NFC Wildcard game ever. DC led all markets with a 50.2/71, as the region tuned-in to watch their first home playoff game in 13 years. Seattle placed second with a 46.7/76.
After making controversial on-air comments about Redskins Quarterback RGIII, ESPN has parted ways with Rob Parker, according to USA Today.
BCS Conference Commissioners confirmed that the first semifinal games in the new college football playoff system will be played in the Rose Bowl and the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 2015. In fact, the Sugar and Rose will be paired throughout the 12-year run lineup, with both hosting semifinal games in 2015, 2018, 2021 and 2024.
Univision’s broadcast of the Liga MX 2013 Clasura season opener pitting America/Monterrey on Saturday delivered more than 1.4 million total viewers, making it Univision’s most-watched opening match of a Liga MX season in the past four years.
NBC Sports Group is bringing back the National Heads-Up Poker Championship to NBC and NBC Sports Network with coverage slated to begin March 14 at 9p. In all, 12 hours will be broadcast with the first three air dates slated for NBC Sports Network and the last three going over-the-air on NBC.
FUEL TV will premiere UFC Roundtable: The Analysts on Friday, January 11at 10p, featuring host Jay Glazer joining Kenny Florian, Brian Stann, Rashad Evans and Chael Sonnen. This will mark the sixth edition of UFC Roundtable, with previous versions featuring league champions, legends and top UFC welterweights.
Sunday will bring the debut of US Ski Team 36 on NBC, giving viewers a look at the hours before Ted Ligety takes on the giant slalom in Alta Badia. The program will air at 3:30p and offer a glimpse at the physical and mental preparation “through the eyes of a champion.” The show is produced by the U.S. Ski Team for NBC and marks the first foray for the US Ski Team into original programming.
Outdoor Channel unveiled its Q1 programming slate which will feature nine new series including Elite Tactical Unit: S.W.A.T. debuting tonight at 9p, as well as King of the Spring and Bottom Feeders.

Budweiser will debut its newest beer, Budweiser Black Crown in stores on Monday, Jan. 21 but will unveil the beverage to national audiences for the first time during a 30-second spot that will air during Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, Feb. 3. The campaign will also include outdoor, digital, radio and print as well as interactive consumer programs on Facebook and Twitter.
Speaking of the Super Bowl, ads have sold for more than $4 million for some 30-second spots for this year’s game, according to the AP, and inventory is now officially sold out. Companies paid an average of $3.5 million for a 30-second spot last year.
The NBA revealed another spot for the league directed by Spike Lee, this time featuring past and present point guard greats and dubbed Disappearing Act. Among the athletes to take part were Magic Johnson, Chris Paul and Steve Nash. The spot debuts nationally on all NBA assets today.
An IEG survey reports that advertisers are poised to spend a record $13.79 billion on sports sponsorships in North America this year, marking a 6% spike over last year’s $13.01 million.
The WWE announced that John Cena and Bamm-Bamm will replace Fred Flintstone on the front of more than 8 million boxes of Post Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles cereal boxes as part of a promotional partnership between Post Foods and the wrestling organization. In January 2012, Post printed more than 3 million Fruity Pebbles cereal boxes featuring Cena that resulted in the highest redeeming on pack promotion in recent Post history.
Wind-up Records and Madison Square Garden announced a new marketing partnership for the venue’s 2012-13 college basketball season that makes it the Official Record Label of MSG College Hoops, offering game day ticket holders free music via download cards which can be found at all MSG concession stands. The download cards feature new music by Wind-up artist Young Guns, The Virginmarys, OAR and The Darkness.

CBS announced that the Super Bowl on CBSSports.com-which features a live stream of the game-will include features such as the first-ever live stream of the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVII Halftime Show featuring global music icon and 16-time Grammy-Award winner Beyonce, immediate access to the Super Bowl commercials as they are broadcast on CBS, as well as four additional camera angles to see the action from different perspectives.
Mediacom Communications and BTN announced that BTN2Go is now available to Mediacom subscribers in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and parts of other Midwestern states.
The Los Angeles Dodgers are thinking tech with the announcement of improvements to the 51-year-old Dodger Stadium for the 2013 season. Upgrades are set to include new high definition video boards, a new sound system, and a state-of-the-art Wi-Fi network and cellular antenna system to support cell-phone and internet connectivity from mobile devices.
