At its Television Critics Association Press Tour in Los Angeles, FOX announced a few news nuggets: the network has renewed Bones for a ninth season.  The procedural will return with all-new episodes starting next Monday and is produced by Far Field Productions and Josephson Entertainment in association with 20th Century Fox Television.  FOX also revealed it will premiere its new alternative late-night programming block, Animation Domination High-Def on July 27 at 11p.  The programming block will include several new quarter-hour animated series including Axe Cop, an action-comedy featuring Megan Mullally, Patton Oswalt and Ken Marino among others; High School USA! starring Vincent Kartheiser and Mandy Moore; and the Untitled Lucas Brothers Project where the stand-up comedy of New York-based identical twins Kenny and Keith Lucas will be animated.  FOX further announced development plans for two long-form event series, Wayward Pines from M. Night Shyamalan and FX Productions and Blood Brothers from Bruce C. McKenna, Gary Randall, Timothy Scott Bogart, Boardwalk Entertainment Group and Fox Television Studios.  FOX will order its first event series pilot(s) later in 2013 with the first one slated to debut in 2014.

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

CBS Sports will air Super Bowl XLVII on February 3 with the kick-off at 630p from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.  This is CBS’ 18th Super Bowl broadcast and CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz and Phil Simms will be calling the action.  Earlier in the day, CBS Sports will offer up seven hours of pre-game coverage starting with Road to the Super Bowl at 11a and the special, New Orleans: Let the Good Times Roll at 12 noon hosted by musician, composer and bandleader, Wynton Marsalis followed by other programming.  In addition, the Super Bowl will be streamed live via CBSSports.com and CBS Sports’ second-screen offerings will feature several interactive online and social elements.  Furthermore, CBS Corp. President/CEO Leslie Moonves said yesterday that CBS has sold out its ad inventory for the Super Bowl.  “We have sold some of our spots for the game for over $4 million for a 30-second spot,” said Moonves, who added that WCBS New York alone has sold spots for “over $1 million” for a 30-second advertisement.

All this week the Live Well Network is airing a five-part series Miss America: Secrets Revealed that gives viewers unprecedented access to the contestants leading up to the 92nd Miss America Competition.  Hosted by Live Well Network personality Rebecca Spera, all 53 pageant contestants will be interviewed and they will offer their beauty, fashion, fitness and other secrets.  The half-hour episodes began Monday and air through Friday, January 11 at 8p on the Live Well Network.  Miss America 2013 will air live January 12 on ABC. 

Starting next Monday Discovery Channel debuts a new four-part series that goes inside the underground world of drug smuggling, animal trafficking and illegal gun trading when Extreme Smuggling airs at 8p.  The series is shot partially from the perspective of the smugglers and reveals the sometimes bizarre ways criminals try to feed our country’s demand for drugs, exotic animals and guns.  Extreme Smuggling is produced for Discovery Channel by Discovery Studios.

HGTV reports the series premiere Hawaii Life on January 1 at 9p posted a 0.76 rating among A25-54 which is +71% higher than the same time last year.  The second episode of Hawaii Life at 930p delivered an even better rating at 0.87 A25-54.  In addition, Island Hunters premiered at 3p with a 0.66 A25-54 rating followed by a second episode at 330p which posted a 0.72 A25-54 rating.  Earlier in the day, HGTV aired the 2013 Rose Parade which averaged a 0.89 rating with A25-54 and the HGTV Dream Home 2013 show at 7p averaged a 0.68 A25-54 rating.

Last Sunday’s season nine premiere of Watch What Happen Live on Bravo attracted more than 1.7 million total viewers and one million plus with A18-49.  On Monday Bravo debuted new series, Vanderpump Rules at 10p which drew in more than 1.0 million with A18-49; 1.2 million among A25-54; and 1.9 million total viewers, making it the network’s highest-rated new series launch since Bethenny Getting Married? in June 2010. 

The season two launch of Gator Boys on Animal Planet Sunday night delivered 1.3 million total viewers and has become the series’ most-watched episode among A25-54 (641,000) and A18-49 (633,000).

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

NBC ordered a pilot called Bloodline, a stylized pulp thriller described as similar of Kill Bill from Friday Night Lights duo Peter Berg and Sarah Aubrey and written by David Graziano (Awake).  The plot is about an orphaned young girl named Bird Benson, who because of an accident of birth, is caught in the struggle between two warring families of mercenaries and killers.  Film 44 and Universal Television is producing.

Canada’s City announced production has commenced on the 13-episode, half-hour adult animated comedy series, Mother Up! starring Eva Longoria who is also the show’s EP.  The show is developed by Rogers Media and is co-produced by Canadian companies Breakthrough Entertainment and Bardel Entertainment in association with US-based Mass Animation.  Mother Up! will debut in fall 2013 on City in primetime and will be available in the US exclusively on the free, ad-supported Hulu and Hulu Plus subscription service.  Breakthrough Entertainment will also distribute the series worldwide outside of North America.

STARZ has cast rapper Rick Ross for the second season of Magic City when it premieres next summer.  Ross will play Butterball, the proprietor of an illegal Cuban/American gambling house in Miami known as a “bolita” (the numbers racket). 

Former Newsradio and Kids In The Hall star, Dave Foley has been cast in a comedy pilot titled Spun Out from Bell Media for CTV.  Foley will play the patriarchal boss of a new PR firm, staffed with people who can spin everyone’s problems but their own.  The pilot will be shot in front of a studio audience starting January 18 in Toronto.  This project is Bell Media’s first multi-camera sitcom.  Project 10 Productions in association with Bell Media.

Saturday A18-49 Analysis:  NBC wiped out the competition Saturday at 10.5/30 with the A18-49 viewers, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, NBC’s NFL Playoff Game 2 scored an 11.1/33 followed distantly by FOX and its double Cops episodes at an average of 0.9/3.  NBC’s NFL ratings declined some during 9p though were still on top at 10.9/31 while Univision’s Sabado Gigante was #2 at 0.9/3.  The ratings decline for the NFL Playoff Game 2 on NBC was still palpable through 10p to a 9.7/27 though still way ahead of the nearest competitor which was CBS’ 48 Hours at 1.1/3.

Sunday A18-49 Analysis:  FOX surged to the top Sunday delivering a 4.4/11 among A18-49, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  In the 7p hour, FOX won with the NFC Wildcard Post Game show at 7.7/21 and CBS’ 60 Minutes placed second at 1.4/4.  FOX did best at 8p with a combination of The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers at an average of 3.7/9 while ABC’s Once Upon a Time was next in line with a 3.1/8.  FOX remained in first place through 9p with Family Guy and American Dad at an average of 3.2/8 and the season premiere of NBC’s The Biggest Loser weighed in at #2 with a 2.9/7.  The second hour of NBC’s The Biggest Loser debut won at 10p with a 3.1/8 and CBS moved into #2 with The Mentalist at 2.1/6.

Monday A18-49 Analysis: In a competitive Monday, NBC was the ratings winner among A18-49 at 2.3/6, according to final primetime national ratings from Nielsen.  At 8p, the second night of The Biggest Loser’s season premiere on NBC did best at 2.4/6 and the season debut of The Bachelor on ABC wooed viewers in second place at 2.1/6.  During 9p, ABC’s second hour of The Bachelor premiere and NBC’s second hour of The Biggest Loser premiere tied for #1 at 2.5/6 each followed by Univision’s Amores Verdaderos in third place at 2.1/5.  Then at 10p, the series launch of Deception on NBC was #1 at 2.0/5 and ABC’s Castle was a tenth of a rating point behind at 1.9/5.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Participant Media unveiled the team of executives who will manage the summer 2013 launch of a new, yet-to-be-named cable network targeting millennials.  Kent Rees will become EVP/Marketing, Scheduling and Operations; Belisa Balaban was appointed as SVP/Unscripted Programming; and Ben McLean was named SVP/Legal Affairs and Business Development.  All three executives will be based at Participant’s Los Angeles offices.  Kent and Belisa will report to Evan Shapiro, President, Participant Television while Ben will report to both Evan Shapiro and Participant Media COO Jeff Ivers. 

WGN America, part of Tribune Broadcasting promoted David Rotem to EVP/Sales and Marketing.  David has been with WGN America since 2009 and previously was SVP/Sales.  In his new capacity, David will continue to supervise sales for the network as well as marketing and product integration strategies.  He is based in New York and reports to Julio Marenghi, President, WGN America.

Sarah Rosen was tapped as Director/Development for Public Media NJ, the nonprofit subsidiary of WNET which operates NJTV, New Jersey’s public television network. 

CABLEready hired David Brumel as Sales Executive, effective immediately.  David will be based in the New York office and report to Maurizio Tavares, VP/Global Sales Manager.  Prior to this new appointment, David was an international sales executive at Apparent Gravity Media.
