FX is adding Dirt, starring Courteney Cox, back to its schedule as the second season opens March 2 at 10p. Returning as series regulars to the drama are Ian Hart, Josh Stewart and Alexandra Breckenridge. The show was originally given a 13 episode order, but only 7 were produced before the writers’ strike. Dirt is co-produced by ABC Studios and FX in association with Coquette Productions.

Broadcast Evening News Ratings Wrap-Up: During another holiday week with lots of sports and political coverage, NBC’s Nightly News ended up on top. It should be noted that ABC’s weekly average included three days (Wed-Fri) while NBC’s and CBS’ is based on four days (Tues-Fri). Here are the results for the week of December 31, 2007:
NBC: 9.81 million total viewers and 2.4/8 A25-54
ABC: 9.00 million total viewers and 2.2/8 A25-54
CBS: 7.05 million total viewers and 1.9/6 A25-54

NBC is offering American Gladiators for additional sampling, allowing the first three episodes of the new series to be re-purposed on three consecutive weekend afternoons on the NBC O&Os and affiliates beginning next weekend.  The move harkens back to the original syndicated American Gladiators which often aired on local stations weekend afternoons. Gladiators premiered last Sunday night and averaged a 5.9/14 among A18-49. In its regular time period last Monday night at 8p, Gladiators averaged a 4.8/12 A18-49.

A new study released by SNL Kagan, “Benchmarking Cable TV Advertising Statistics” reported the 2007 market was divided between national growth and local market weakness. SNL Kagan further forecasts a 10% CAGR for national cable ad sales between 2007 and 2011, reaching a projected total of more than $28 billion. Local market cable ad sales are expected to grow at a lesser pace of 6.8% in the next five years, reaching an estimated $5.7 billion by 2011.

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY reporting this week from CES in Las Vegas:
In his Tuesday morning keynote at CES, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts outlined several key strategic initiatives designed to keep the nation’s largest MSO relevant in the digital world. “Project Infinity” will deliver higher “wideband” speeds next year, which he demonstrated by downloading Batman Begins in 4 minutes. He promised a 10-fold increase in the number of HD titles on Comcast’s VOD platform, from 1,000 movies in 2008 to 3,000 in the near future. And he unveiled a new souped up version of Fancast.com that will offer viewers more than 3,000 hours of TV content from NBCU, CBS, Fox and Viacom which can be wirelessly transferred to customers’ home DVRs. At the heart of the “Comcast 3.0’s” initiatives is the long-awaited adoption of Open Cable Platform “Tru2way” set tops allowing developers to write interactive applications once for the entire cable industry. Such interoperability will be necessary if cable hopes to keep up with innovation already whetting consumer appetites for portability, interactivity and social functionality.    Click here for the full DIGITAL edition. CYN OPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  MTV Networks has inked a number of third-party online distribution deals for content from its networks including its Nickelodeon, The N, MTV and Comedy Central as well as GameTrailers, AtomFilms and others.  Under the new deals MTVN content will be available via Dailymotion, GoFish, Imeem, MeeVee and Veoh Networks.   Click here for the full KIDS edition.

CYN OPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  At a press conference yesterday, French president Nicolas Sarkozy suggested that the country remove advertising on public TV.  Other aspects of his speech touched on laying taxes or duties on private media or certain aspects of their ad sales businesses such as mobile and internet to compensate for the ad revenue difference.  Interestingly, French private broadcasters’ shares on the market increased when the news got out.  The timeframe for any possible legislation to drop public TV advertising will not be for another 2 years.    Click here for the full INTERNATIONAL edition.
