Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 9, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

MTV Networks has inked a number of third-party online distribution deals for content from its networks including its Nickelodeon, The N, MTV and Comedy Central as well as GameTrailers, AtomFilms and others.  Under the new deals MTVN content will be available via Dailymotion, GoFish, Imeem, MeeVee and Veoh Networks.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Decode Enterprises, the distribution unit of DHX Media Ltd., adds the new preschool action/adventure series, Animal-Mechanicals (40×11) to its roster.  Newly commissioned by CBC (Canada), Animal-Mechanicals is produced by Halifax Film, Decode’s sister company, with the first episodes slated for delivery this winters.  The Animal-Mechanicals are a group of transforming characters that regularly venture out on missions in the series, which is described as a mix of “monster truck rallies” and the “world of mythical animals.”

MORE KIDS STUFF

The NBC Universal, Corus Entertainment, and DIC Entertainment-owned KidsCo is making a global run.  The international kids network just debuted on the Philippines’ Sky Cable and the Middle East’s Showtime DTH satellite platform.  The platform will also expand into Indonesia, South Korea, and Hong Kong with a March 20, 2008 launch planned.  The Ukraine will get KidsCo this spring while South Africa will begin watching in August.

D is for Digital,” a new report released at CES’ Sandbox Summit by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center, analyzed the current marketplace for kids digital content. Findings include a shortfall of digital educational products, recommendations for better communication between the research community and media developers and a call for protection of children from growing commercialism.

RHI Entertainment’s new TV movie adaptation of Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth (2 hours) will premiere on ION Television Network, Sunday, January 27, 9p, as part of the RHI Movie Weekend.

Sorpresa Network, a division of Juniper Content Corporation, has surpassed 1 million subscribers.  Sorpresa reached this milestone with the help of its launch last week in Puerto Rico on Liberty Cablevision’s system, which added some 90,000 new subscribers.

MARKETING/LICENSING

SilverBirch Studios, a developer of handheld and mobile games, and Breakthrough New Media are partnering to develop/produce two games based on the forthcoming animated series, Jimmy Two Shoes, which will premiere in early 2009 on Teletoon Canada and Jetix Europe.  Under the agreement, SilverBirch will develop a mobile game, which will be distributed via Sweden’s Global Fun, and a flash game that will be housed on Teletoon.com.  Slated for release simultaneously to the premiere of the TV series, both games are funded through the Telefilm Canada New Media Fund and the Bell Broadcast and New Media Fund.

STONE SOUP

Yoko Ono was on hand at CES in Las Vegas yesterday to introduce the new John Lennon Educational Tour Bus.  A non-profit initiative, the goal of the bus is to provide kids with a free hands-on opportunity to create and record their own music, produce videos and take digital photos, and will continue to offer tours and workshops.  Throughout 2008 the bus, which features a recording studio and a range of great state-of-the-art equipment, will make stops at high schools, colleges and university campuses, and retailers.  A tour schedule and access to all content created on board the bus is available at lennonbus.org

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Brenda Freeman is named CMO, Turner Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media.  Reporting to EVP and COO, Stuart Snyder, Freeman is responsible for heading all marketing, on-air and trade creative services supporting Cartoon Network, Adult Swim and Boomerang and their related online businesses, as well as the digital efforts GameTap and Super Deluxe.  Most recently, Freeman was SVP/Integrated Marketing and Promotions, Nickelodeon and MTVN Kids and Family Group.  She previously held several other marketing roles with MTVN and with ABC Radio Networks, and before that in consumer marketing and product development management for Frito-Lay and Pepsi-Cola.

Samantha Maltin is upped to SVP/Integrated Marketing and Partnerships, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group.  She is charged with developing and managing partnerships with US companies as well as overseeing on- and off-air promotions marketing efforts with key advertisers for all Nick TV and digital outlets.  Maltin will report to CMO, Pam Kaufman.  She was most recently served as VP/Viacom Brand Solutions, and prior to that as VP/Promotions Marketing Department, Nickelodeon.

Wizard Entertainment promotes Stephen Shamus to SVP/Business Development.  He will work with COO, Fred Pierce as he continues to focus on Wizard’s online and ecommerce initiatives, as well as being involved in the design of the new website.  Shamus joined the company in 1991 as Price Guide Editor.

RATINGS

Cartoon Network’s new series, Transformers Animated, premiered Saturday, January 5, 10:30a, during its Dynamite Action Squad block (9a-12p), earning the top spot in its time period against broadcast and cable with Boys 6-11 (528,000) and Boys 2-11 (762,000), up by +28% and +55% respectively over the same time last year.  Additionally, the series debut also grew among K6-11 (657,000) and K2-11 (956,000), increasing by +14% and +29%.
