Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 5, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

The Weinstein Company (TWC) acquires a 25% stake in Liberty Media’s Starz Media, which includes Anchor Bay Entertainment and other TV and home entertainment assets.  Under a separate pact, Anchor Bay enters into a multi-year domestic distribution deal for new feature films from TWC and its Dimension Films.  No financial terms of the partnership were announced.  Under the home and digital entertainment deal, which includes Blu-ray, DVD and EST/VOD/PPV electronic/digital distribution but not TV rights, will see the release of up to 20 TWC and Dimension movie titles per year.

Beginning this spring streaming content from Netflix on TV will be as simple as pushing a button on a remote control, as Netflix teams with a range of consumer electronics companies to create a Netflix-branded button on remote controls for TVs, Blu-ray units and other devices that connect the internet to TVs.  The new button, some of which will feature the red Netflix logo, will be featured on remote controls from companies including Dynex (Best Buy’s in-house brand), Haier, Memorex, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, and Toshiba.  Sharp, Sony, and Toshiba will also place the Netflix button on remote controls for select new internet-connected TVs.  Remote controls for the Boxee, Iomega and Roku set-top boxes also will feature the Netflix one-click remote.  No plans for parental control or instructions have been unveiled for use with the new remote control button.

Rentrak Corporation, which provides media audience measurement services, has acquired Media Salvation, a provider of sales and financial reporting systems and services to movie studios and indie film companies.  The acquisition secures an additional studio to Rentrak’s entertainment client roster for its Studio Revenue Share Essentials, Digital Download Essentials and Mobile Essentials services.  As part of the agreement, David Cortese, who founded Media Salvation in 2009, has been appointed SVP/Digital Studio Services, Rentrak.  Cortese previously toiled for eight years at Sony Pictures Entertainment, eventually serving as the division’s worldwide CIO.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Hasbro Studios, Hasbro’s production and distribution arm, inks a programming deal with Italy’s Mediaset to televise its series Transformers Prime, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, G.I. Joe Renegades, The Adventures of Chuck, and Friends and Pound Puppies across the broadcasters channels.  The deal, which launches in Q4 2011, will also see Mediaset serving as Hasbro’s exclusive licensing agent for merchandise in the Italian market for the five properties above, as well as Hasbro’s brands Monopoly, Trivial Pursuit, and Littlest Pet Shop.

This week marks Classic Media and Bullwinkle Studios‘ release of Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends: The Complete Series on DVD in a collectible edition box set ($99.98) for the first time.  The box set, which includes 18 discs, features all 163 episodes of Rocky & Bullwinkle, along with the classic component of the series including Boris & Natasha, Peabody’s Improbable History, Fractured Fairy Tales, Dudley Do-Right of the Mounties, and Aesop and Son.  The set also features bonus content, such as Goof Gas Outtake (aka The Longest Laugh in History), an on-camera interview with June Foray (the voice of Rocky).  Additionally, there are collectibles, including Frostbite Falls Field Guide to a Moose, a Squirrel and a Royal Canadian Mountie, by Keith Scott, and a Loyal Viewer award.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) enters into a licensing partnership with Rubies Costumes for a line of Halloween costumes based on Cartoon Network’s original action-adventure series, Generator Rex.  Featuring kids costumes based on characters from the series, the Generator Rex costume line is set to debut at all tiers of retail in time for Halloween 2011.  Created by Man of Action (creators of the Ben 10 franchise), Generator Rex is produced at Cartoon Network Studios in Burbank.  In the US, new episodes of Generator Rex debut on Cartoon Network on Fridays at 8:30p.

DQ Entertainment (DQE) enters into an exclusive UK toy merchandising deal for its 3D animated series The Jungle Book with Mookie ToysCopyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG) represents DQE’s Jungle Book UK merchandising rights in UK.  Under the terms of the deal through DQE’s licensing agent CPLG, Mookie acquires the Toy licensing rights for The Jungle Book in the UK, Republic of Ireland and the Channel Islands.  Mookie will sell Jungle Book toy products including wheeled bicycles, tri-scooters, tricycles, balance bikes, sit N rides, play balls, outdoor activity centers, slides, among others.  DQE will receive a significant upfront payment as minimum guarantee from this agreement that covers the outdoor play and ball categories for three years.

Oberon Media, a multi-platform casual games company, enters into a deal with The Tetris Company, via Tetris’ licensing agent Blue Planet Software, to license the exclusive rights for the Tetris game on internet-connected TVs.  Beginning Q1 2011, Oberon’s partners and consumer electronics manufactures will have Tetris available directly via TV and TV related devices such as Blu-ray players.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Ludorum appoints Kirsten Fallon as VP/Retail Marketing and Development, US.  She will oversee retail development for Ludorum’s licensing program for Chuggington.  Based in Ludorum’s NYC office, Fallon will report to Maureen Taxter, SVP/Consumer Products.  Most recently, Fallon was with Peanuts Worldwide (f/k/a United Media) where she led retail strategy and development for kid-targeted brands including Peanuts, Fancy Nancy and Beatrix Potter.

RATINGS

Nickelodeon‘s premiere of its live-action series House of Anubis on New Year’s Day, Saturday, January 1 at 8-9p.  The hour-long series debut was the top telecast on broadcast and basic cable TV among K2-11 (1.2 million), K6-11 (952,000), and Tweens 9-14 (846,000).  Nickelodeon’s House of Anubis is already popular in Europe.  The series is Nickelodeon US’ first live-action series produced in the UK.  New episodes of House of Anubis will debut on Nick US Monday-Friday, January 10-14 at 7p.
