Cynopsis: Kids!
01/04/12

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 4, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Wizards of Waverly Place fans get ready for the answer to the age-old question (OK, 106 episodes long question) of which sibling in the series will get to keep their powers?  The answer will be revealed when Disney Channel premieres a special hour-long episode of the series.  In addition to series regulars Selena Gomez, David Henrie, Jake T. Austin, Jennifer Stone, Maria Canals-Barrera and David DeLuise, the special episode, entitled Who Will Be The Family Wizard, will feature Bridgit Mendler (Good Luck Charlie, It’s Christmas!) and Gregg Sulkin (As The Bell Rings, Avalon High) reprising their roles as a vampire and werewolf, respectively.

LICENSING

Imperial Toy, a maker of licensed and non-licensed bubbles, seasonal products and novelty toys, signs a licensing deal with MGA Entertainment to manufacture products based on the Lalaloopsy property.  Imperial will produce novelty toys (e.g. play lanterns, projectors, wind-up toys and flashlights) based on MGA’s Lalaloopsy brand that will be available at retail from fall 2012, and bubble toys (e.g. multi-packs of bubbles, bulk bubbles, figural bubble bottles, bubble jewelry, bubble machines, bubble party favors, etc.), sand and beach toys (e.g. buckets, sand molds, shovels, sifters, sprinklers, among others) beginning spring 2013.  The new deal comes just ahead of the Hong Kong Toy & Games Fair, which takes place this year January 9-12 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.  Imperial Toys has a longstanding relationship with MGA, having served as a Little Tikes licensee for many years.

Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment are set to release several new DVDs all on February 21, 2012:

  • Thomas & Friends: Movie Pack, a 3-DVD set featuring three Thomas movies and bonus content (games, videos, educational activities, behind the scenes footage, among others).  The Movie Pack includes the movies Thomas & Friends: Hero of The Rails, Thomas & Friends: The Great Discovery, and Thomas & Friends: Calling All Engines.
  • Barney: Movie Pack 3-DVD Set, featuring three Barney movie titles and bonus content, including Barney: Jungle Friends, Barney: Animal ABC’s, and Barney: Let’s Go On Vacation (bonus content for the last movie includes three Spanish-language sing-along songs).
  • Bob the Builder: Here To Help will be available on DVD as well as for digital download and On Demand.  The title is comprised of five episodes of Bob the Builder as well as bonus content (a game and two music videos).

MORE KIDS STUFF

Toei Animation has signed a broadcast agreement with Televisora Nicaraguense (Nicaragua) for a number of its series.  Under the deal Toei licenses all seasons of its anime series Dragon Ball (153 episodes), as well as its other brands including Slam Dunk, One Piece, Saint Seiya and its spin-off series’, Saint Seiya the Hades Chapters Sanctuary, Inferno and Elysion.

PBS unveils plans to expand its free PBS Kids Lab (www.pbskids.org/lab) site, which already offers 50+ cross platform critical math skill building games for K 2-8. The new content is designed to further support parents, caregivers and teachers, with the inclusion of bilingual translations of adult instructions and resources like a Home Activities section, math tips for families to use in daily activities, and a new blog series with content related to kids and media.  Parents and caregivers are key players in supporting their kid’s learning and these efforts aim to help make math learning a part of daily life, which can be particularly useful for parents/caregivers who consider themselves math challenged and have difficulty incorporating math activities and language into daily life. Some of the math learning support that PBS Kids recommend to parents includes introducing number, counting and basic mathematical concepts by adding simple activities to the daily family routine, such as these ideas:

  • When driving in the car, count the trees as you pass by.
  • Call out street signs and identify their shapes.
  • Count aloud the seconds it takes for a child to brush his/her teeth.
  • Cook with the kids; count ingredients.
  • Play grocery store with household items. Count out the change.

PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) are partners on this project, which is part of the Ready To Learn Initiative, a U.S. Department of Education-funded effort.

The Library of Congress names author Walter Dean Myers as the new National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature for a two-year term (2012-13).  Myers, who has penned 100+ books and a five-time winner of the Coretta Scott King Award and two Newbery Honors among many other awards, has selected Reading Is Not Optional as his platform.  He will be officially inaugurated at a ceremony in Washington, DC on January 10, 2012. Myers (www.walterdeanmyers.net) works includes: Where Does the Night Go?; Fast Sam, Cool Clyde and Stuff; Hoops; Fallen Angels; Monster; Autobiography of My Dead Brother; Lockdown. Myers succeeds Katherine Paterson as national Ambassador for Young People’s Literature. The National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature is chosen based on recommendations from a selection committee representing many segments of the book community. The position was created to raise national awareness of the importance of young people’s literature as it relates to lifelong literacy, education, and the development and betterment of the lives of young people. The Center for the Book in the Library of Congress, the Children’s Book Council (CBC), and Every Child a Reader, the CBC foundation, are the founders and sponsors of the National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature initiative (www.read.gov/cfb/). Financial support for the National Ambassador program is provided by Penguin Young Readers Group, Scholastic Inc., HarperCollins Children’s Books, Random House Children’s Books, Candlewick Press and the Lois Lenski-Covey Foundation.
