Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 3, 2007 and this is your first early morning Kids! briefing.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Faerie Films, LLC has entered into a production pact with JunkYardDog Films, LLC to co-produce the teen-targeted documentary film, All Jacked Up, previously titled Vending Machine.  Set to begin production this month, the movie will focus on the state of kids, food and fitness (in school, at home etc) and health-related choices that kids/teens and parents are and aren’t making.  What should we expect from All Jacked Up?  Think Supersize Me, a movie that Jennifer Mattox, founder, Faerie Films and director has said was at least part of her inspiration for this project.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nicktoons Network will premiere the animated series The Secret Show (13 x 30′) Saturday, January 20 at 8:30p, its regular day and time, as part of the channel’s Three Headed Monster programming block.  Targeted to Kids 7-12, The Secret Show is produced by Collingwood O’Hare Entertainment on a BBC commission and distributed by BBC Worldwide, which retains the cross-media rights to distribute the series worldwide, as well as merchandising, publishing and home video rights.  The series debuted in the UK on CBBC in September 2006.

Anime Network will host the US VOD TV premiere Air Gear: East Side Showdown on January 25, 2007.  Targeted to teens and up, the action series is set in the world of Storm Riders where individuals and gangs go up against one another on Air Treks, which are motor-powered inline skates.  Air Gear is based on the popular manga series by OhGreat! and produced in Japan by Toei Animation.  ADV Films will release the unedited volume one of Air Gear on DVD the following month on February 6, 2007.  Anime Network is a unit of A.D. Vision, inc., which is also home to ADV Films and Newtype USA.

Reaching a TV network milestone, the G4 network is now available in 60+ million US cable and satellite households.  The network and its multi-platform content (podcasts, VOD, broadband, mobile and Internet) are targeted to guys 18-34.

MARKETING/LICENSING

4Kids Entertainment has completed new license deals for Viva Piñata with DecoPac, Inc (cake, bakery decorations), Rubie’s Costumes Co., Inc. (Halloween costumes) and Unique Industries, Inc. (piñatas, foil balloons).   All three companies are slated to introduce products based on the Viva Piñata at retail beginning fall 2007.  Microsoft Game Studios recently launched the Viva Piñata videogame, developed by its Rare ltd., for the Xbox 360.  The game is a companion property to the animated series that airs on 4KidsTV and is produced by 4Kids at Bardel Animation.

Brainytoys Limited has inked a license deal with PorchLight Entertainment, Inc. for the Jay Jay the Jet Plane property.  Under the agreement Brainytoys will develop a range of electronic and remote control toys, computer games, plug-and-play games and related electronic products based on the series and its characters for release in North America.  Brainytoys first Jay Jay products are slated to be available beginning 2Q 2007.

THQ Wireless and TT Games Publishing Ltd. plan to release LEGO Star Wars II Mobile internationally. Based on the Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, LEGO Star Wars II allows players to control characters (e.g. Luke, R2D2 and Princess Leia) and their unique powers, and features multi-level missions, puzzles and the reflects the Star Wars sense of humor.  Universomo created the LEGO Star Wars II game.

STONE SOUP

ABC in conjunction with its series Ugly Betty has launched Be Ugly ’07, a girl-targeted campaign that promotes self-esteem and empowerment.  An original half-hour special, The Beauty of Ugly Betty, will be made available to ABC affiliates and Disney cable channels in English and Spanish.  Created by ABC, the special is co-produced by People Magazine and People En Espanol.  The Be Ugly campaign will also be supported through a number of avenues including cross-channel content, on-air interstitials, a dedicated web site ( http://www.beugly07.com ), awareness-building events as well as through an original song by Jason Mraz, which will be available in English and Spanish at iTunes.  Additionally, ABC is also teaming up with Girls Inc., a non-profit organization, to introduce a campaign specific t-shirt, and Ugly Betty star America Ferrera is featured on the February 2007 issue of CosmoGIRL!

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jason Seiken has been appointed SVP/Interactive, PBS.  Seiken will oversee new media content and services including pbs.org, pbskids.org, pbskidsgo.org, and pbsparents.org in addition to emerging broadband and mobile platforms.  He will report to Chief Content Officer, John Boland.  Seiken joins PBS from AOL, where most recently he was VP/Content and Programming, AOL Europe.
