~ NATPE 2013 ~

Today at NATPE:

Sorry to report the Tresor elevators were slow as molasses today, resulting in people jamming themselves into Up elevators in a desperate attempt to get back down to the lobby. However, all was forgiven at the spectacular Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Awards, which kicked off with an elegant cocktail party on one of the Fountainebleu terraces, facing a calm and beautiful ocean.

During the day, highlights included:

* Debmar-Mercury’s Ira Bernstein and Mort Marcus on how their Martin Laurence/Kelsey Grammer sitcom was born: “We had signed Martin first,” says Marcus, “and then Lionsgate told us that they had a deal with Kelsey Grammer. “So as a joke I said, ‘What about the two of them together?'” adds Bernstein. “So we put them in a room and they loved each other.”  In other Debmar news, the duo is thinking of airing original Wendy Williams episodes all through the summer, “Ratings are better when she’s live,” says Marcus. The two say they will continue to push production boundaries with their novel 10/90 model, which served them so well with Tyler Perry, and now with Anger Management.

* Outgoing NBCU President Barry Wallach (who looked awfully relaxed, by the way) on his successor: “There are already a bunch of talented people already on the team, so I am not sure they even need to replace me.”

* Legacy Award winner Steve Levitan on what’s next: “I’ve got my hands more than full with Modern Family,” he says. “This kind of show doesn’t come around often, and you need to take care of it.”

* Young Broadcasting’s Deb McDermott, President and CEO, on this year’s NATPE offerings: “We’re looking to buy in daytime/early fringe,” she says. “Maybe a talk show, maybe a talk/entertainment show.” NATPE was more than just a convention for McDermott and her team: “I bought all my general managers this year so that they could take advantage of some of the sessions, as well as looking for shows that will work on their schedules. It’s so great when they get to interact with syndicators face to face, and NATPE is a great place to do it.”

* MGM’s John Bryan, President of Domestic Television Distribution, feels much like McDermott: “I think any good business needs to have a convention. I brought 15 people with me so they can attend the sessions and make contacts. It’s incredibly valuable.”

Hey, I gotta go hit NATPE’s Birthday Bash: Fitz and The Tantrums are calling me! See you on the dance floor.
