Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, January 30, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you all this week from the 2008 NATPE Convention in Las Vegas.

News from NATPE:

  • Marie Osmond will host a new entertainment/lifestyle talk show for women from Program Partners. The hour-long series will be offered in syndication for a fall 2009 launch. At this early date, no other specifics about the show’s format are available.
  • Litton Entertainment cleared the unscripted series Storm Stories in 70% of the U.S. to air this fall. Station groups that have picked up the program which documents Mother Nature in action include CBS, ABC, Tribune, Fox, Gannett, Cox, Hearst, Weigel, Media General, Clear Channel, Sinclair and Scripps. Litton added new customized features to the program such as live local news and weather updates from affiliate meteorologists.
  • IFC and Lionsgate concluded a new licensing agreement for a package of 70 Lionsgate feature films. Some of the titles include Away From Her, Bug and Slow Burn among others. The package includes films from Lionsgate’s horror genre and its library of 12,000 titles as well as some from Lionsgate’s sister companies StudioCanal, Roadside Attractions and After Dark Films.

Now Premiering – HALLMARK MOVIE CHANNEL IN HD

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

CBS picked up 13 episodes of the CTV original drama series Flashpoint (wt) which will begin production in Toronto this April. CBS will air the one-hour police drama about a big city Strategic Response Unit later this year. At the same time it airs in primetime on CBS, Flashpoint will also air in Canada. The series is produced by Pink Sky Entertainment and Avamar Entertainment in association with CTV and CBS Paramount Network Television.

TLC’s season finale of Miss America Reality Check which aired last Friday (10p) posted an average audience of 1.06 million total viewers and a repeat of the finale, which aired prior to the pageant on Saturday (7p), attracted 1.14 million total viewers. Following the encore, The Miss America Live! special drew in 1.25 million A18-34 viewers and 1.44 million W18-49 viewers.

Discovery Health introduces a new six-episode docu-series Deliver Me about three female doctors who are best friends and partners in a successful Los Angeles OB/GYN practice. The series starts March 4 and gives viewers a look inside these women’s lives as the juggle delivering babies and caring for patients while raising their own families.

NBC has ordered a second season of Celebrity Apprentice from Mark Burnett Prods. Season #1 of Celeb App will conclude on March 27. To date, the current rendition has averaged a 3.9/10 A18-49 rating.

Monday night’s State of the Union Address aired live on nine national networks: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CNN, FOX News Channel, MSNBC, Telemundo and Univision. The combined preliminary average audience estimates for total viewers (2+) from 9p-10p was a 24.7/38 rating/share and 37.5 million total viewers. These numbers were down considerably compared to the January 23, 2007 Presidential address which did a 29.6/24 rating/share and delivered 45.5 million viewers among total viewers (2+).

California-based Mirage Media, LLC sold television station KPSE-LP/Palm Springs, a MyNetworkTV affiliate, to Wisconsin-based Journal Communications, Inc.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

Production started on a new real-life series for the Golf Channel which will follow young golf phenoms as they learn from one of the world’s best swing coaches, Hank Haney who works with Tiger Woods. Hilton Head 101 (wt), scheduled to debut in September, will document the training by Hank and his team of young golfers at the International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, SC. Orlando-based Convergence will assist with the production of this series.

HGTV tapped Genevieve Gorder to be expert/host for a new show premiering in 2009. Dear Genevieve will merge the linear channel and HGTV.com as viewers will submit their design problems to her through the website, and the best one will have Genevieve solving the design project during the TV show.

Coming to GSN is a new game show with host Patrick Duffy, reports THR.  GSN has ordered 40 eps of Bingo America, a show that has a viewer player component, where viewers can download their own bingo cards online and play along. The show debuts on March 31st at 7p

The Weather Channel added Jarod Miller, host of the nationally syndicated Animal Exploration with Jarod Miller, to its Forecast Earth team where he will host segments about animals and climate change starting March 8.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY: Yahoo announced that profit dropped 23% during the Q4 amid weak online ad sales and said it would lay off approximately 1,000 of its 14,300 employees next month to prepare for further “headwinds” expected in the marketplace. The company also unveiled a major new agreement with AT&T to begin sharing ad revenue on multiple platforms and to offer content to the telco’s TV, broadband and mobile customers. Att.net will relaunch next quarter powered by Yahoo applications and offer AT&T Wireless customers access to these services for no extra charge. Meanwhile AT&T U-verse TV customers will continue to have access to Yahoo content through the service’s interactive U-bar feature, available in select cities. Full edition: CYN DIGITAL. CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORYDisney-ABC Domestic Television has cleared the new first-run, live-action sci-fi series Wizard’s First Rule (22×60) with Tribune Broadcasting’s owned stations for a fall 2008 launch, covering 35% of the country.  Executive Produced by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man movies), the series is based on author Terry Goodkind’s book series, The Sword of Truth, begins production this May.  ABC Studios produces, marking its first broadcast syndication production.  Published by Tor Books the final book in the series will be published this year.  The series, like the books, is not specifically aimed at kids but will likely have a following that includes older kid, teen and family sci-fi and fantasy fans.   Full edition: CYN KIDS.

CYNOPSIS INTERNATIONAL – TODAY’S TOP STORYTelemundo Internacional (TI) pulled in a brand new distribution deal with Brazilian media company Bandeirantes (Band) for the distribution rights of the Brazilian network’s first high-def telenovela, Dance Dance Dance. (Band owns 79 stations in Brazil and is also available in the U.S. through its Band International and Band New). As part of the deal, TI picked up the global distribution rights for the romantic musical story, excluding Brazil and parts of Asia.  TI is also distributing Promofilm‘s catalog internationally and recently closed a deal in France for the adaptation of Telemundo’s dating show 12 Corazones. It is being produced in Paris by NRJ 12, a digital terrestrial TV channel, for a February debut.  Full edition: CYN INTERNATIONAL

Monday – A18-49 Analysis:  NBC gained a foothold on Monday with 2.5/7 A18-49, according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research. NBC was the leader each hour as American Gladiators won at 8p with 3.5/9; NBC’s news coverage of the President’s State of the Union was first at 2.3/6; then the 10p hour with the Union address wrap-up and The Office rerun did best with 1.8/5.

Dogmatic hired David Walton as VP/Operations and Kimberley Norris as VP/Sales. David will use his managerial and communications experience to attract, develop and foster industry talent and to maintain quality customer service. Kimberley will handle national sales and marketing efforts and increase the account management in New York City and Los Angeles.

Rose Helen Perez joins TVN Entertainment as General Counsel where she will supervise the legal department after having served for two years as outside counsel and primary legal advisor for the company.

Former SCI FI Channel VP/Original Programming, Nora O’Brien moved to Universal Media Studios to become VP/Drama Programming. In her new role, Nora will develop new scripted series and act as a current executive.

Reactrix Systems, Inc. named Neal Bangerter as VP/Production Management to oversee corporate and product strategy and market development for the Reactrix STEPscape and WAVEscape products. In addition, the company also appointed Chris Betts as VP/Corporate Development to evaluate and implement strategic partnership and M&A opportunities.
