Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 30, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing, coming to you from the NATPE 2008 convention in Las Vegas.
Disney-ABC Domestic Television has cleared the new first-run, live-action sci-fi series Wizard’s First Rule (22×60) with Tribune Broadcasting’s owned stations for a fall 2008 launch, covering 35% of the country. Executive Produced by Sam Raimi (Spider-Man movies), the series is based on author Terry Goodkind’s book series, The Sword of Truth, begins production this May. ABC Studios produces, marking its first broadcast syndication production. Published by Tor Books the final book in the series will be published this year. The series, like the books, is not specifically aimed at kids but will likely have a following that includes older kid, teen and family sci-fi and fantasy fans.
Australian’s Sticky Pictures and Nelvana Studios have begun production on the new K6-11 targeted animated comedy Pearlie (52×12). The show is based on Wendy Harmer’s books, Pearlie the Park Fairy, about a glamorous, pint-sized fairy that is the caretaker of downtown Jubilee Park. Pearlie is a co-production between Sticky Pictures and Nelvana for Australia’s Network Ten and YTV in Canada with delivery slated for 2009.

Nickelodeon celebrates Valentine’s Day with Crush Week, February 9-14. The stunt begins with TEENick Crush Weekend February 9 (8-10p) and 10 (6-9p), hosted by Nat Wolff, Miranda Cosgrove and J Bookie wrapping around the premieres of love infused episodes of iCarly, The Naked Brothers Band, Just Jordan and Zoey 101. Crush Week continues February 11-13 (5-6p), and culminates February 14 with an all day Valentine’s Day marathon. Throughout the week Nickelodeon will feature Crush Week related activities across digital platforms.
Elsewhere, Nickelodeon Latin America acquires the teen-targeted telenovela, Karku, from TVN Chile. The coming-of-age drama revolves around a 13-year-old girl and her new group of friends as her folks send her from home in a small city in Northern Chile, to live in Santiago with her aunt, uncle and cousin Lucas. Karku will air weekdays from March 3 at 10p on Nickelodeon in the region.
Oasis International completes new broadcast licensing deals for the animated series Iggy Arbuckle. The series has been picked up by Canal + SA and TPS in France, Cartoon Network in South East Asia, Korea, Philippines, Australia/New Zealand and India, and by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). Produced by Blueprint Entertainment in association with National Geographic Kids Entertainment, the series is distributed international by Oasis in conjunction with National Geographic Television International. Previous deals include Jetix Europe, Animania (US), and the series currently airs in Canada on Teletoon.
HIT Entertainment and Turner International India enter into a partnership extending their previous relationship for TV rights for HIT’s preschool properties, including Bob the Builder and Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends on Cartoon Network across India. In addition to the TV rights, Turner’s Cartoon Network Enterprises, the licensing and merchandising of India’s Cartoon Network and POGO channel’s, will oversee licensing rights for the two properties across a range of key categories.
Jetix Europe taps Splendid Thematics to handle Ad Sales for its channel in Romania. Under the new deal, Splendid Thematics will oversee Jetix’s on-air and online advertising in Romania, with the goal of offering more integrated promotions for advertisers. The pact signals the end of Jetix’s relationship with ARBOmedia in Romania. Jetix launched the new Jetix Play channel in Romania in November 2008.
Animalia, the CGI animated series, gets its first licensing as Animalia Productions, PorchLight Entertainment and Penguin enter into a multi-year deal to develop/publish tie-in products based on the property (e.g. storybooks, activity/coloring books, readers). The TV series is based on author’s Graeme Base’s book, Animalia, which was originally published by Penguin Australia. The first products under the deal are slated to be available at retail in the US from fall 2008, and from August 2008 in Australia and NZ. The series currently airs in the PBS Kids Go! (US), BBC1 (UK), CBC (Canada), and Network Ten (Australia).
Eric Coleman is appointed SVP/Development, Walt Disney Television Animation. He will report to Gary Marsh, President/Entertainment, Disney Channels Worldwide. Coleman, who was most recently Nickelodeon’s VP and Executive Producer/Animation Development and Production, is charged with taking Disney’s animated TV development into a new phase, will head up all short-form and long-form animated series development for Disney Channel, Toon Disney and Jetix platforms. He will also oversee Walt Disney Television Animation’s Casting and Music departments. Congrats Eric. At the same time, Meredith Roberts, SVP/Creative Affairs, Disney Television Animation has been named to the new role of SVP and GM, DisneyToon Studios. Roberts had headed Disney Channel’s animated program development.
