Cynopsis

01/02/08

Good Morning.  It’s Wednesday, January 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Did you see the big game on Saturday night? Okay, maybe not The Big Game, but a notable game nonetheless. The Patriots-Giants game, was simulcast nationally for the first time on three networks: NFL Network, CBS and NBC, in addition to local over-the-air station partners WWOR/New York, WCVB/Boston and WMUR/Manchester. The game , averaged 34.5 million viewers. And during this game, the New England Patriots became the first team in NFL history (since the 16 game schedule was set up in 1978) to complete a 16-0 regular season. And let’s face it – for a football fan, this was one helluva game!

Tonight’s Premieres:
ABC: Wife Swap at 8p and Supernanny at 9p
CBS: Power of 10 at 8p
MNT: Whacked Out Videos at 8p
NBC: Law & Order at 9p

~ MORE GOOD STUFF ~

Some progress was made post-yuletide, though, as the WGA and David Letterman’s production company Worldwide Pants forged a binding independent deal allowing The Late Show with David Letterman and Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson to return on-air starting tonight along with their full writing staffs. According to the WGA this “is a comprehensive agreement that addresses the issues important to writers, particularly New Media. Worldwide Pants has accepted the very same proposals that the Guild was prepared to present to the media conglomerates when they walked out of negotiations on December 7.” The WGA also called on NBC Universal to follow suit and “negotiate a company-wide deal that will put Jay Leno, who has supported our cause from the beginning, back on the air with his writers.” In a follow up letter to its members, the WGA indicated it will seek out more independent deals with individual companies, especially the larger employers.  All of the late night broadcast talkers will be returning as of tonight, tho only Letterman and Ferguson return with their writing staffs.

Mexico’s Televisa won the latest U.S. legal round against Univision.  The ruling stated that the U.S. Spanish-language network’s alleged breaches of contract may be a justification for the Mexican company to terminate Univision’s exclusive Televisa content distribution deal in the U.S.  The original 25-year content agreement runs through 2017.  The trial will begin on March 18, 2008.

Retro Television Network (RTN) will launch early this year in Providence on a digital stream of WJAR, the NBC affiliate owned by Media General.

~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Initiative USA recruited Kris Magel as SVP/Director of National Broadcast in the company’s New York office. Kris, who begins his new post early this month, will handle all national television negotiations and connected functions. Initially, he will work closely with Ray Dundas, SVP/Group Director of National Broadcast, who will assist Kris until he transitions into the broader position later this year. Ray will then continue in his current role. Additionally, Scott Haugenes, SVP/Group Director of National Broadcast will depart from Initiative early this year to join the multi-platform VOD network RipeTV.

SCI FI Channel advanced Erik Storey and Tony Optican to SVP and hired Chris Sanagustin as VP/Development. All three are based in Los Angeles and work on current and future original series and long-form projects.
