Cynopsis: Kids!

01/02/08

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 2, 2008, and this is your first early morning briefing.

Wondering if the Writers Guild of America strike is affecting the habits of the Gen-Y viewing audience? Well, according to a new end of 2007 survey of the demo conducted by Peanut Labs, Inc, 58% of Gen-Y’ers say they are watching “about the same amount” of TV since the writers’ strike began.  The group also reports not viewing an increase in the amount of online video content, with 47% saying they have not watched more since the strike.

While you were celebrating, Capcom revealed news on its blog that Byun-hung Lee has been cast to play Storm Shadow in the live-action feature film adaptation of G.I. Joe.  The Korean-actor is a popular TV star in Japan, and was the basis for the character Wayne Holden in Capcom’s animated series Lost Planet.  As for the G.I. Joe movie, we’ll have to wait until 2009.

In a first, Marvel has released a new comic book episode of The Fantastic Four in both English and Spanish, titled Fantastic Four: Isla de la Muerte!  In the episode Ben Grimm heads to Puerto Rico on vacation, followed by the rest of the group snooping along behind.  There, the team encounters El Chupacabras, an evildoer based on mythical characters, whose name means “goat sucker”.

Watch out for that treeeee …!  The new animated version of animator/creator Jay Ward’s George of the Jungle premieres January 18 at 7:30p.  In support of the new series debut, Cartoon Network has scheduled the live-action movie George of the Jungle (1997) to air January 11 at 7p, followed by a sneak peak of the series at 9p.  The new George of the Jungle is co-produced by Bullwinkle Studios (a joint venture of Classic Media, and Jay Ward Productions) and Studio B Productions.  The series will air regularly Fridays at 7:30p as part of the network’s Fried Dynamite programming block.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Marvel Entertainment names Kids Media India, a unit of Dubai based Spacetoon Media International Group, to represent its licensing, merchandising, publishing and promotional rights in India.  Over the course of the first year of the agreement, Spacetoon expects to close upwards of a dozen licensing deals.

Target Entertainment has inked a multi-year license deal for the upcoming movie, The Nutcracker: The Real Story, with Roman, Inc. to produce holiday decorations.   Under the deal, which covers the US, Canada and Latin America, Roman will include seasonal ornaments, nutcrackers, 3D figurines, snow globes, night-lights and yard decorations, first of which will be available from holiday 2008.  The new movie, which was filmed in Budapest, features several new songs penned by Sir Tim Rice.

NCircle Entertainment is set to release two new CGI animated WordWorld DVD titles, Welcome to WordWorld (60 min) and Rocket to the Moon (60 min), on January 15, 2008, under a North American content distribution deal with Word World, LLC.  The DVD releases are being supported by a 10-month national print media effort.  Upcoming WordWorld DVD titles, including Duck’s Family Reunion, is slated for a spring 2008 release.  The series currently airs on PBS Kids.

STONE SOUP

PBS Kids kicks off a kid’s health initiative to encouraging kids and families to make healthy choices and combat obesity, with plans to convene a Public Media Council on Children’s Health early this year, which will include public TV and online producers, PBS member stations, community and education partners, health and experts in kid’s media, development, health and nutrition. As part of this effort, the Council will review recent research and recommendations and evaluate practices to understand the complexities of the issue and create a blueprint for multi-platform content, educational services, outreach and events for public media.  Two key goals of the PBS KIDS children’s health initiative include the development of health-related guiding principles for all activities and a long-term alliance of partners.

Also combating obesity… New Years day marked the launch of Nick at Nite’s new campaign Kick One, Pick One (KOPO), which aims to encourage families to kick some bad habits by, eating better, getting fit and spending more time together.  The multi-platform initiative is comprised of public service announcements, a website and supported by an on-air/online/radio promotional campaign.  Families can upload their own content (photos, videos) online and interact with other families via message boards.  Spots, including focusing on breaking bad habits in 21 days, will bow on-air and online throughout 2008. Additionally daily tips and recipes will be available online.
