Comedy Central launches a new sketch comedy series Important Things with Demetri Martin on February 11 at 1030p. Stand-up comedian, Martin is the creator, executive producer and star of the series combining stand-up comedy, sketches, animation, music and more to focus on one “important thing” each episode such as timing, chairs, power or safety. Martin’s own jokes, drawings and hair will be primary features throughout the series and occasionally other celebrities such as David Cross, Amanda Peet and John Oliver will make guest appearances. The series is produced by Jon Stewart’s Busboy Productions, Inc. in association with One Verse, Inc. and is executive produced by Martin and Stewart.

Hosts of AMC’s Sunday morning series Shootout, Peter Bart and Peter Guber are moving into primetime to host AMC StoryMakers, a series of round-table discussion specials featuring current entertainment newsmakers covering topics like summer movies, holiday movies, the Oscars to overall entertainment industry news. The first AMC StoryMakers will debut February 13 at 8p with others scheduled for this summer and the holidays.

Singer/songwriter Chris Isaak is set to host BIO’s new original series The Chris Isaak Hour beginning February 26 at 10p. The weekly, 60m series will spotlight a popular music artist each week in an intimate studio setting with interviews and performances. Upcoming artists include Trisha Yearwood, Steve Nicks, Smashing Pumpkins, Chicago, Glen Campbell, Michael Buble and Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens). The series is produced by Scott Sternberg Productions.

Fox Reality Channel renewed its original series American Idol Extra for a fourth season. The weekly series will air Thursday nights beginning March 26 at 7p and again at 10p with a late-night sneak peek on Wednesdays at 10p and 1a. The series that interviews American Idol Top 10 finalists is from FremantleMedia North America and 19 Entertainment and is hosted by Jillian Reynolds and former Idol finalist Ace Young.

Spike TV is bringing back Funkmaster Flex, guru of car customization to host a new series Fast Machines with Funkmaster Flex opening April 5 at 1030p. The 30m 12-episode series will join Spike TV’s programming block, The PowerBlock and we’ll watch as Flex transforms cars with his crew of experts while celebrities such as LL Cool J, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Terrell Owns and  50 Cent among others make special appearances. Monica Taylor Enterprise produces the series based at Flex’s garage in the Bronx.

Who Do You Think You Are?, a new alternative series on NBC adapted from a British documentary series, takes celebrities on a personal journey to discover their family genealogy and stories. The series premieres April 20 at 8p and is from executive producer Lisa Kudrow and her production company Is or Isn’t Entertainment and the U.K.’s Wall to Wall productions. Celebrities who have signed on to date include Lisa Kudrow, Sarah Jessica Parker and Susan Sarandon and others will be announced in the near future.

Studio 3 Networks, the premium entertainment venture established by Viacom Inc., its Paramount Pictures division, MGM and Lionsgate named its new entertainment service, epix. Providing customers access to feature films, original entertainment content and a VOD service via broadband, epix is slated to launch this fourth quarter. In addition to classic films and television series from Paramount, MGM and Lionsgate, epix will showcase recently released movies from Paramount, Paramount Vantage, MGM, United Artists and Lionsgate including the titles The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Cloverfield, Defiance, Drillbit Taylor, The Duchess, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull among many others. In addition, epix will have the rights to all 17 re-mastered James Bond movies and Raiders of the Lost Ark, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

HGTV hired the brand licensing company, The Beanstalk Group to create a comprehensive line of branded solution and style-based products beginning this year. Beanstalk will start with HGTV branded merchandise in the home and garden categories with the goal to increase HGTV’s reach to new audiences. Beanstalk will also work to integrate HGTV’s on-air experts and personalities into licensing and merchandising opportunities.

NATPE 2009 News:

  • MarVista Entertainment introduces a new tween reality competition series titled In the Real World. Produced by Apartment 11 Productions based in Montreal, the 13-episode one-hour series follows 18 contestants from 12 to 14 years old as they compete in a variety of real-life challenges, learning skills along the way to make it in the real world. The winner receives four years of college tuition and a family vacation package valued at $25,000. In the Real World premieres on YTV in Canada on February 4 at 7p. MarVista holds the exclusive global program and format sales rights for the series.
  • Independent television production and broadcast syndication company, Steve Rotfeld Productions confirmed the renewals of three weekly FCC-friendly, children’s E/I series for fall 2009. Wild About Animals and Awesome Adventures are both cleared in 90% of the U.S. including the FOX O&O Station Group; Whaddyado is cleared in 85% of the U.S. including the CBS Television Stations group for its CW and MyNetworkTV affiliates.

Jo Frost, the British nanny and star of ABC’s Supernanny will soon be seen on The Style Network beginning fall 2009. The Style Network acquired the exclusive off-network rights for all seasons to date from Disney-ABC Domestic Television. In its fifth season on ABC, Supernanny is produced by Ricochet Television.

Barnholtz Entertainment, Inc. (BEI) bought all North American rights to the supernatural/horror feature film Sam’s Lake. The deal encompasses theatrical, DVD, television and online. Based on a true story, Sam’s Lake is from the same producers behind Twilight and Madonna’s Maverick Films. Sam’s Lake will be released in theaters this Friday in New York and Los Angeles by BEI through Cinema Epoch; BEI will also distribute the film on DVD and television via Lionsgate.

ION Television goes hi-def as of February 16. ION Television HD will be first introduced in 20 markets out of ION’s 55 markets including New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, reaching more than 46 million households. ION Television HD will launch in more markets throughout this year. ION Media Networks also has plans to launch its digital television brands, Qubo and ION Life in hi-def later in 2009.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT ~

New Pilot Orders:

  • ABC ordered three drama pilots from ABC Studios, reports THR: I, Claudia about a female lawyer who is determined to become the next U.S. president; John Scott Shepherd wrote the pilot script and is executive producing with Matt Gross. The next project is Inside the Box about an ambitious news producer and her associates set in Washington; Richard E. Robbins wrote the pilot and is executive producing with Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy) and Betsy Beers. The third yet-to-be-named project is based on the Argentinean drama Brothers & Detectives about a detective who finds out he has a genius 11-year old brother who can help him solve crimes; Daniel Cerone is the writer and executive producer.
  • NBC heads to the future with a drama pilot called Day One from writer/producer Jesse Alexander (Heroes). The story centers on a small group of survivors bent on rebuilding a society following a catastrophic global disaster. Universal Media Studios will produce.

~ ELSEWHERE IN CYNOPSIS ~

CYNOPSIS DIGITAL – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  Yahoo managed to beat Wall Street’s (albeit pessimistic) estimates reporting a net loss of $303 million on net revenues of $1.37 billion, partly due to a goodwill impairment charge of $488 million and restructuring charges of $108 million. New CEO Carol Bartz tried to dispel rumors that the company might outsource its search business to Microsoft during the company’s conference call, noting that Yahoo’s search share has stabilized and that she “didn’t come here to sell the company.”   Full edition: CYN DIGITAL.

CYNOPSIS KIDS – TODAY’S TOP STORY:  MarVista Entertainment unveils its new tween reality competition series, In the Real World (13×60), this week at NATPE.  MarVista holds exclusive worldwide program and format sales rights for the series, which is produced by Apartment 11 Productions.  In the Real World features 18 contestants from ages 12-14 as they race across North America and complete a series of real world challenges.  In the Real World is set to premiere on YTV (Canada) on February 4 at 7p. Saturday – A18-49 Analysis:  FOX matched its ratings Saturday night from the previous week at 2.0/6 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. FOX led at 8p with double Cops episodes averaging a 2.0/7 while the two Game Show In My Head episodes on CBS came in second averaging a 1.3/4. FOX stayed at #1 through 9p with AMW at 2.1/6 followed by CBS’ Crimetime Saturday repeat at 1.2/4. At 10p, CBS had a chance to be in first with 48 Hours Mystery at 2.0/6 followed by UNIV’s Sabado Gigante at 1.0/3.

Sunday – A18-49 Analysis: ABC edged out the competition Sunday night with 3.3/8 A18-49, according to final national ratings from Nielsen Media Research. ABC firmly stayed at #1 each hour of primetime: at 7p America’s Funniest Home Videos posted a top-rated 2.6/7 over second place 60 Minutes on CBS at 2.4/7. ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition nailed a win at 8p with 3.6/9 while a combo of two The Simpsons episodes on FOX came next at 2.6/7. Part two of Extreme Makeover on ABC tallied a 4.5/11 ahead of FOX again, this time averaging a 3.0/7 for a Family Guy rerun and American Dad. A repeat of Desperate Housewives on ABC polished off the final win at 2.5/6 ahead of two movie specials, CBS’ Hallmark Hall of Fame and NBC’s Last Templar Part 1 tying for second with 2.3/6 apiece.

During 9p, ABC’s The Bachelor and FOX’s 24 tied for the top perch at 4.3/10 each and CBS with repeat comedies Two and a Half Men/Worst Week averaged a second place showing with 3.2/8. ~ EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

American Latino Syndication, a fully-owned unit of LATV Networks, elevated Scott Basilotta to Director/Affiliate Relations and Research and Erica Soto to Show Producer/Head Writer for the show American Latino TV in its eighth season. In addition, Julio Pabon was upped to Senior Segment and Web Producer; Pablo Barrera to Segment Producer; Adanaris Liu to Marketing and Graphics Coordinator; and Kristy Carreno becomes Production Coordinator.

Dan Ronayne was appointed as VP/GM of MSG Networks, in charge of the daily operations for MSG and MSG Plus as well as programming, marketing and advertising sales for both networks. Dan reports to Michael Bair, President, MSG Media.

Ron Suter advanced to EVP/GM, Canada, NBC Universal Television Distribution and EVP/Universal Studios Canada. Ron’s roster of duties involves supervising all Canadian television operations for NBCU Television Distribution and to position Universal Studios as a national leader for the studio and parent company General Electric. Based in Toronto, Ron also manages licensing activities for all of NBCU’s theatrical and television programming across all platforms for English and French Canada.

Sony Pictures Television International (SPTI) merged recent acquisition 2waytraffic and SPTI’s production operations together and in so doing has named Kees Abrahams as President/International Production to manage SPTI’s whole production portfolio including 2waytraffic, where he had previously served as CEO. Kees will continue to be based in 2waytraffic’s Hilversum headquarters and will report to Michael Grindon, President, SPTI.

mPRm Public Relations promoted three senior managers: Susan Yin to Executive Director and Chelsea Hettrick and Leif Helland both as Account Supervisors in the General Entertainment division.
