The iPhone couldn’t have come a moment too soon for Verizon. The company missed its earnings projections slightly on Tuesday, reporting revenue of 54 cents/share or $26.4 billion overall. Verizon Wireless added 872,000 contract customers during Q4, a steep decline from the 1.1 million customers added during Q4 2009, finishing the quarter with 94.1 million total subs. If you’re planning to buy a Verizon-powered iPhone (available in stores from Feb. 10), it may make sense to act fast. The company said it will offer a $30/month unlimited data plan for the iPhone “for a limited time,” an option no longer available to AT&T iPhone customers (although legacy customers have been grandfathered into unlimited data plans.)
 

~ MULTIPLATFORM CONTENT NEWS ~

 
News Corp.‘s much awaited digital newspaper, The Daily, is finally set to launch in the U.S. within the next two weeks after several delays with a price tag of $.99/week, according to Reuters.
 
The Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment division has launched a new fashion-themed social game around its CW series Gossip Girl, which returned with new episodes this week. Gossip Girl: Social Climbing, developed by Arkadium, allows fans to earn rewards by attending virtual fashion shows, sample sales, club openings and the like, fulfilling stated social “missions” and interacting virtually with attending guests. 
 
Digital consumption of NHL content continues to rise, according to the league, with unique visitors up 25% y/y, video starts up 128%, and subscriptions to its NHL GameCenter Live product up 24% over a year ago.
 
ContentFilm’s Fireworks International licensed the multiplatform rights of several new series from Sony Pictures Entertainment Latin America, comprising pay TV, VOD, internet and mobile. The titles include 20 x 4-7 minute and the 90-minute TV movie versions of the Vuguru drama “Pretty Tough,” 200 5 min. webisodes and 40 30 min. episodes of BBC teen drama The Cut and 16 x 30 minute episodes of the non-fiction HD reality series Freak Encounters, acquired for broadcast.

 
~ INNOVATORS & START-UPS ~

 
In an effort to promote its online wallet service, Facebook announced that beginning July 1 it is requiring developers to utilize its Facebook Credits payment system for virtual good transactions. The company takes a 30% cut of all sales made through the platform.
 
Described as a cross between The Huffington Post and Publishers Weekly, The Gatekeepers Post is a new social media publishing venture set to launch Feb. 1, helmed by author Jeff Rivera with a veteran editorial board from the publishing world behind it. The site will endeavor to cover the rapid changes happening in the publishing world, along with book reviews, op-ed pieces and coverage of special publishing industry events.
 
Ad Revenues at microblogging site Twitter are projected to more than triple from $45 million in 2010 to $150 million in 2011 in just its second year offering advertising, according to eMarketer.

has acquired Seattle-based hyper local mobile advertising start-up Rel8tion co-founded by serial entrepreneur Peter Wilson for an undisclosed amount, per AllThingD.

White label online video management firm thePlatform announced a new partnership with Adobe to better integrate the company’s Flash platform to enhance DRM protections, integrate mobile publishing, offer a new adaptive HTTP streaming solution and integrate thePlatform’s mpx video console with Flash Builder 4. The integrated solution will adapt several monetization options including VOD, subscription and a la carte rentals.
 
Multiplatform digital film distribution company Distribber struck a deal with Beverly Hills-based Brainstorm Media to bring filmmaker-distributed titles to VOD, Satellite, Cable and Telco systems through a new “Filmmaker Direct” label.
 

~ TRENDS, RESEARCH, ETC.  ~

 
Avg internet connection speeds in Asia and Western Europe continue to climb far above U.S. averages, according to Akamai‘s quarterly State of the Internet report, measuring Q3 2010 data. Asian cities accounted for 75% of the top 100 fastest cites. China grew its internet penetration by over 30% in the past year adding some 15 million new unique IP addresses connecting to Akamai’s network. The U.S. remained the top traffic generator, responsible for 12% of the world’s internet traffic, followed by Russia (8.9%). Mobile consumption also continues to rise dramatically: The ave. data consumption grew during Q3 on 101 of the 111 listed providers. Thirty-five providers doubled the average monthly volume of content downloaded from Akamai year-over-year.

The Asia Pacific region also dominates in terms of virtual goods revenue, according to new research from In-Stat, accounting for 81% of the worldwide total last year. The emergence of social and casual games drove revenue to over $7 billion in 2010, a number that is expected to more than double by 2014. Nexon, Tencent, NHN Corp, and Shanda Interactive are responsible for a majority of Asian sales.
 
Developers are planning to triple their production of mobile apps across multiple platforms as more smartphones and tablet come on line, according to a new survey of 2,200 app developers conducted by IDC and the Appcelerator app platform. Interest in developing for Android Tablets jumped 12 points in three months with 74% of respondents saying they are ‘very interested’ in developing for these devices. Interest in BlackBerry Playbook nearly doubled from 16% to 28%; iPad interest rose three points to 87%, while webOS Tablet interest remained flat at 16%. Android phone interest (87% ‘very interested’) rose 5 points to tie iPad and close to within 5 points of the iPhone (92%). Apple continues to be the number one priority with over 10 billion app sales to date.

As Rupert Murdoch rushes to get his digitalzine on the market, The New York Times Co., The Washington Post Co. and Gannett have teamed to introduce their own personalized news service dubbed Ongo that aggregates articles from a variety of sources including the AP, The WaPo, USA Today, as well as select pieces from the NYTimes and The Financial Times. (The NYTimes is preparing to launch its own metered pay system later this quarter.) The service, priced at $7/month with content from additional city papers available for 99 cents/source, is viewable through various web browsers, smartphones and tablets. The user interface doesn’t wow – lead stories and “editors picks” are featured by category including home, U.S., business, science & tech, etc. – but handy customization features allow you to set topics that will act as a filter for related content. You can also form “clubs” with friends and family members to facilitate interactions around the news.
