01/26/05

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 26, 2005, and this is your first early morning briefing from the NATPE Convention in Las Vegas.  (Due to technical problems, there was no issue published yesterday.)

CBS has officially moved Wickedly Perfect to Saturdays as of January 29 airing at 8pm.  On Thursdays at 8pm, CBS will air repeats of either Without a Trace or CSI until Survivor Palau premieres on February 17.

The premiere of CBS’ Numb3rs got a nice kick off from the AFC Championship Game on Sunday night, giving the show a 8.1/19 A18-49 according to fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen Media Research (time period data only).  The big game gave the show a solid boost with a 16.0/33 lead-in.  Elsewhere, ABC’s lineup was #2 for the night, with EM: HE pushing a 7.4/15, and Desperate Housewives upping the ante to a 11.1/22, just 6 share points behind CBS for the 9p hour.  At 10p opposite Numb3rs, ABC’s Boston Legal delivered a 6.0/14.

Newest series on Monday nights, Medium on NBC and Supernanny on ABC bookended CBS’ CSI: Miami.  Medium led the 10p hour with a 6.2/15 A18-49 rating according to final numbers from Nielsen Media Research, ahead of both CSI: Miami [r] (5.3/13) and Supernanny 3.9/10. Elsewhere, 7th Heaven on the WB ha a big night with a much anticipated birth (babies are always good for ratings), earning a 3.0/8 A18-49, ahead of CBS’ sitcom combo. 7th Heaven had 8 million viewers, and was #1 in its time period among W18-34 (5.2/14) and #2 among A18-34 (3.4/10) and W18-49 (3.0/8).

Tonight’s Premiere:
FOX:  Simple Life – The Interns at 9p

Casting / Development / Production

  • Michael Pena, hot off the screen in Million Dollar Baby, has joined the cast of The Shield on FX.  He plays the role of an Army reservist looking to get into law enforcement.  Pena has signed on for 12 eps in the fourth season, debuting March 15.
  • Cast in the Fox pilot Peep Show is comic actor Johnny Galecki as one of two roommates (Josh Meyers plays the other) into whose brains viewers get a rare glimpse.
  • TLC will go without a host for the new season of Trading Spaces, which means Paige Davis is out of the room makeover biz. In a statement from the network, it was explained the show hoped to become “more spontaneous” with a renewed focus on homeowners and designers.

While ABC makes up its mind about what to do with its Friday night sitcom Savages, it has pulled it from the schedule and replaced it with repeats of 8 Simple Rules, and has cut its episode order for an original 22 down to 19. With that said, expect Savages to return to Friday nights post Feb sweep.  Additionally, according to Daily Variety, ABC has plans use a page from the NBC playbook and ‘supersize’ Tuesday nights in February with 40m expanded eps of My Wife & Kids, George Lopez and According to Jim.  On each of these three Tuesday night, Rodney will be left at the gate.

Court TV has reached an agreement with Sirius Satellite Radio whereby Court TV’s signature series, Forensic Files, will air on the radio, airing in 2-hour block on Saturdays from 3-5p and Sunday evenings 9-11p.  The program will be included on Sirius’ Court TV Plus, which airs 24/7 on channel 134. The deal was negotiated by CABLEready, on behalf of Medstar Television.

Twentieth Television and Verizon Wireless have agreed to partner to bring two direct-to-mobile series to customers.  20th will produce 26 one minute episodes – called in this arena “mobisodes”, of two serial dramas: Love and Hate, and The Sunset Hotel.  The serials will be distributed by Verizon Wireless and Vodafone’s 3G Live to V CAST and Live! subscribers.
