Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Wednesday, January 25, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Nickelodeon, in partnership with Televisa, orders 80 episodes of an original 1-hour US adaptation of the popular Mexican telenovela, Reach for a Star (Alcanzar una Estrella) for Nick at Nite.  Targeted to families, the single camera, daily series will be produced in association with Sony Pictures Television and is set to premiere later this year on Nick at Nite. Production begins in March in LA. Reach for a Star revolves around Loren, a shy, smart high schooler whose life drastically changes when her singing/songwriting career takes off and she meets her teen idol crush. The series will be co-executive produced by Jill Farren Phelps (General Hospital, One Life to Live) and Hisham Abed (The Hills and The City). Josh Griffith (Young and the Restless, As the World Turns) will serve as head writer. Alcanzar una Estrella first broadcast on Canal de las Estrellas and Univision in 1990.


February 11-13

Little Airplane Productions is accepting applications for a unique workshop taught by accomplished preschool TV veterans on each step of creating a high-quality preschool series. Topics include Writing, Pitching, Legal, Design, Music, Directing, Producing, Distribution and more. A panel of noteworthy Children’s TV broadcasters will be on hand to discuss pitching to a network.

Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace releases in 3D for the first time from Friday, February 10, 2012.  AMC theatres ( will celebrate the 3D release nationwide by offering a new Hasbro Star Wars Fighter Pod with the purchase of each RealD 3D ticket for Episode I in the first weekend, February 10-12 (limit one per ticket, while supplies last). Additionally, 10 AMC theatres across the US will host exclusive event screenings of the movie in 3D, starting Saturday, February 11 at 11a (local times), select theatres will offer activities, giveaways and interactive experiences (while supplies last) including: Exclusive Anakin Skywalker Podracer 3D glasses with purchase of ticket; the Hasbro collectible Star Wars Fighter pods; a Lego area; Darth Maul face-painting; character appearances; demonstrations of the upcoming Xbox Kinect Star Wars.


Common Sense Media makes another move to reach teens where they are, as it makes its digital literacy and citizenship curriculum lessons for students in grades 9-12 available for iPad as part of the new iTunes U ( Through the new iTunes U app, high schoolers with an iPad can access Common Sense Media’s self-guided, interactive lessons.

Nickelodeon Latin America unveils plans to celebrate its 15th anniversary, aNICKversary, this year with a slate of new original productions, as well as an on-air battle titled NICK 15, and new episodes of returning series. Nickelodeon Latin America’s 15th anniversary year will include:

  • The debut the second season of Grachi on February 27, which this time around features new characters and a new school year. The novella is distributed by Comarex and has been sold to 52+ countries.
  • Julie & The Phantoms (26×30), an original local production from Nickelodeon Brazil, will premiere across Latin America in Q1 2012. The series revolves around a teen, Julie, who along with her band of ghosts battles her shyness to help achieve her dream of becoming a rock star. The band will make live performances and release a CD of original songs. The multiplatform series will also be supported by interactive web component across social networks, blogs, channels, as well as mobile content.
  • Q2 2012 will bring the premiere of MissXV, a musical novela about three friends who dream about their quinceanera parties and first loves.  Co-produced by Televisa, MissXV is inspired by Quinceanera, a novela produced by Televisa in 1987. In addition, this project follows EME15, the musical group formed by the stars of the novela, Pauline Gotto, Eleazar Gomez, Natasha Dupeyron, Yago Munoz, and Jack Achaga Macarena Duarte.
  • There will also be, no surprise, local editions of the 2012 Kids’ Choice Awards in Mexico, Argentina and Brazil.
  • The network’s will host the aNICKversary January-March, during which fans will be asked to select their favorite of eight Nickelodeon series, with special airings of favorite episodes and the like.
  • The networks new series include:  Monsuno, Life with Boys, Bucket & Skinner, How To Rock and its new original telenovela 11-11 En Mi Cuadra Nada Cuadra, which is currently under development.
  • Additionally, this year Nickelodeon Latin America will debut new episodes of series including SpongeBob SquarePants, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Kung Fu Panda: The Legend of Po, Planet Sheen, Avatar: The Legend of Korra, and the new version of Nickelodeon’s hit from the 90s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, as well as live-action series iCarly, Victorious, Big Time Rush, Power Rangers Samurai, among others.

In the UK, Disney XD picks up a second season of the football/soccer-centric series Goalmouth, per Broadcast Now. A Disney Channel UK in-house production, the new season of Goalmouth (12×21) will be hosted again by Tim Warwood and Adam Gendle, and is set to debut on the channel on February 23, 2012.  The new season will feature the Premier League Schools Tournament, going behind the scenes of football games and interviewing players.

Your Family Entertainment (FYE) enters into a content distribution and channel deal with Filmedia for the Italian market. Under the deal, Filmedia will represent FYE properties including the animated series Mission Odyssey, Altair and Shadow Of The Elves. Filmedia currently represents public broadcaster such as ORF (Austria, and parts of Switzerland, Germany and Italy), Deutsche Welle (Germany) and ZDF (Germany). Filippo Mori Ubaldini, formerly Country manager of Discovery Networks Italy, is CEO of Filmedia S.r.l.


DreamWorks Animation SKG appoints Gregg Taylor as its Head of Development.  Taylor takes over the position previously held by Alex Schwartz, who has been named as a producer on the studio’s upcoming movie Mr. Peabody & Sherman (March 14, 2014). Taylor had been a senior development and production executive with DreamWorks Animation. He previously also served as EVP/Development and Production, The Kennedy/Marshall Company, and ran Mike Myers’ production company, where co-produced Austin Powers in Goldmember and executive produced The Cat in the Hat for Imagine Entertainment. Schwartz served as DreamWorks Animation’s head of development since 2008. Prior that, she was Walden Media’s EVP, overseeing the creative group and serving also as executive producer on multiple films. Schwartz began her career as an executive at Touchstone Pictures.

Zodiak Media Group rebrands as Zodiak Media ( and bolsters its operations with several appointments. Marathon Media CEO, Vincent Chalvon Demersay has been appointed Chief Strategy Officer for Zodiak Media and will report to Group CEO David Frank. In his new position, Chalvon Demersay, who will also continue to serve as CEO of Marathon Media, will work closely with Group COO Jonathan Slow and his team. David Michel is named SVP/Group Marketing, while also remaining GM of Marathon Media. Valerie Tailland is promoted to Director/Group Communication, in addition to her role as Head of Communication for Zodiak France. All three are based in Paris.

Zodiak Rights, Zodiak Media’s international division, names two to its recently re-structured and expanded Consumer Products team.

  • Nicola Herrmann is named to the new position of Head of Brand Marketing, Zodiak Rights. Herrmann will manage marketing activities for all of the kid’s properties in Zodiak Rights’ (London) portfolio as well as developing and implementing brand plans, working closely with the Licensing Sales and Creative Services teams. She will report to Jennifer Lawlor, SVP/Strategy and Planning, Consumer Products. Prior to this Herrmann served as Director/International Brand Management EMEA for Viacom International Media Networks, and UK Brand Marketing Manager/Consumer Products for Warner Bros.  She previously toiled for HIT Entertainment and The Licensing Company.
  • Gabrielle Langdorf is named as International Agents Manager. She will be responsible for managing Zodiak Rights’ agents worldwide, working with appointed third parties to develop local consumer products programs across all properties. Most recently, Langdorf was Licensing Executive, EMEA at Chorion.  She will report to Jane Kennedy, Head of Sales, Consumer Products, Zodiak Rights.
